International Visitors This Weekend - This weekend we have
a couple of visitors that are worth a mention coming to our game with
Feltham. First up is a fairly regular visitor from Norse Don HP he
will have his flag with him I am sure and if you are interested in
being a member of the Norse
Dons I am sure he will be able to assist you.
OK we have all done some silly things in our lives in getting to watch
football but this weekend we may have someone doing the most crazy
journey ever to watch a game of football. Dave Hambly used to live
in the UK but moved to Southern California a number of years ago he
hasn't seen the Dons in about 5 years but this weekend he is flying
from Los Angeles to London to watch AFC play and then flying back
home on Monday!! I think he sets off later today and arrives tomorrow
so Dave have a great trip and look forward to meeting you on Saturday.
Dave is a regular listener of Radio Wdon and also the match updates
and posts on Weird
and Wonderful World as SoCalDon he has also started up a Website
based on the history of football in Wimbledon and you can visit his
site by clicking here.

In From The Cold - Tonight we made the trip to Chipstead in
the League cup and in freezing conditions we had to wait an additional
30 minutes to be able to progress into the next round. The side had
a number of changes from Saturday with Ryan Gray and Harvey sitting
out the game and replaced by Darren Dobinson and Paul Quinn, Gareth
Graham started his first game of the season coming in for Seb Favata
and Paul Scott stepped in for Joe Sheerin.
The pitch at Chipstead is one of the best in the league and although the weather had been really cold it looked like it would provide a good service. The game started slowly but it looked like there were a few difficulties in defence as a couple of players had difference of opinions.Around 15 minutes into the game came the first move of note as Chipstead broke the offside trap and had 2 players free but Lee Carroll pulled off a good save when it looked like they would go 1 goal up. But just a couple of minutes later they were 1-0 up when the ball was played back to Lee Carroll but he appeared to miss his kick and they were able to play the ball into an empty net.
The score at half time was 1-0 to Chipstead but just 5 minutes into
the second half Gavin Bolger was fouled in the box and the ref gave
a penalty Kevin Cooper stepped up and scored to give us a scoreline
of 1-1. After about 25 minutes of the second half we saw the 2nd debut
of Noel Frankum who came on for Gareth Graham as he came onto the
pitch he was greeted with chants of "Who are yar" and "Womble Reject"
which was really funny and you could see him smiling even when he
was in the centre circle.
With just five minutes of normal time left AFC had a number of chances first Paul Scott ran the full length of the pitch and his shot was saved then Danny Oakins had a blaster of a shot but this was also saved. Paul Scott even had the ball in the net but the linesman had his flag up for offside so the goal didn't count. The whistle was blown it meant that an additional 30 minutes would be played, both sides had used all there subs Gibson had come on for Bassey and Sullivan had replaced Paul Quinn. As the game had gone on we had been playing better and we had chances in the first half of extra time through Cooper, Everard and Scott. Then as the half was coming to a close Paul Scott had a powerful shot at goal which looked like it was going to be saved but the power took it out of the keepers hands and into the back of the net. With just 15 minutes left we were 2-1 up.In the final 15 minutes we had a couple of chances but Chipstead proved they were not out yet as they hit the bar with a cracking shot but then with just 1 minute left of the clock Darren Dobinson had the ball out by the wing and fired a cross/shot into the box and it curled over the keeper and into the back of the net to give us a 3-1 victory. In the next round we are at home to Raynes Park Vale the date is still to be decided. The Man Of The Match vote is now open please click below to vote: - |

be posted on the updates. |

26/01/2004 Halfway Point - Crazy as it may seem Saturday victory at Farnham Town was our 23rd game of the season and therefore we have reached the half way point of the season. For the record we have 95 league goals and with the number of points we currently have we cannot finish in the bottom 2 of the table, 68 Points would of also seen us finish 12 last season. Kevin Coopers goal on Saturday was also his 29th of the season so he is well on the way to matching last years total of 41. |
|
25/01/2004
Farnham Report - After the last two games had seen us not having
a victory it was important that we got back to winning ways as quickly
as possible and a trip to Farnham although they are at the wrong end
of the table was always going to be tricky. They had a number of new
players as well as a new manager, and the pitch was very muddy as
well.
The AFC line up also saw a number of changes
with Steve Gibson, Seb Favata missing due to injuries, Simon Bassey
and a first team debut for Micky Fernandez were the replacements.
Farnham is an unusual ground as it's only possible to watch from 3
sides of the pitch and the area behind one of the goals is level with
the crossbar so you are looking down on the pitch.
The game had a slight delay to allow all
the traveling Dons fans in and AFC started by attacking the "Mountain
End" of the ground or as I imagine Farnham call it the Clock End.
The dons were on the attack from the kick off and Joe Sheerin had
a good chance when the ball was played through to him he tried to
lob the ball over the keeper but just couldn't get enough height on
the ball and the keeper collected it.
The attacks started to come thick and
fast With the next chance coming to Kevin Cooper who had a shot but
this was turned round by the keeper for a corner, next up was a header
wide by Lee Sidwell following a Gavin Bolger Cross.
AFC Won a corner and as the Farnham team
were getting into position the Number 5 called out to the right back
"Get Closer Number Two" now I know that they had a couple of new players
but it may have helped if the defenders had known each others names
before the game.
Once again Kevin Cooper forced the keeper
into a save and we were awarded a corner. From the following move
Cooper had the ball by the byline at the edge of the box and he crossed
it in for Joe Sheerin to score from within the 6 yards box. Farnham
0 AFC Wimbledon 1. This was Joe's first goal since Cobham away
on 15th November and was nice to see him back on the scoresheet.
With just over 22 minutes played of the
half it was a nice start. The attacking continued Cooper once again
tried to round a defender but the shot was blocked and then Gavin
Bolger had a shot but this was just wide of the goal.
A rare Farnham attack then took place
and they ended up winning a corner but as the ball was played in the
ref spotted a foul and gave us a free kick.
We won a corner at the other end of the
pitch and as we were getting ready to take it one of our players (Bassey)
called out to Micky Fernandez who was standing by the front post to
"come away from it" as Mickey ran away from the post he took a couple
of defenders with him and as the ball came in Matt Everard met it
with his head and it flew into the back of the net to put us 2-0 up.
The half came to an end with AFC 2-0 up meanwhile up the road at Cobham the score was Cobham 1 AFC Wallingford 1.With The Dons in control it meant that 15 minutes into the half Joe Sheerin who had picked up a knock in the first half could be replaced by Paul Scott. Lee Sidwell broke down the wind and made a brilliant pull back into the box but the defender just managed to clear the ball before a shot could come in.
Our third goal came from Paul Scott and was a lovely finish where
he managed to go round the keeper. Within a couple of minutes we were
4-0 up when Kevin Cooper got his first of the afternoon the goal was
set up by a Lee Carroll clearance upfield that Kevin ran on to. After
his goal Coops removed his shirt to show a T-shirt that had a message
on it, at the time it wasn't clear what the message said but afterwards
it was confirmed it said "Get Well Ian" and was a message to AFC Wimbledon
fan Ian Widdup who is in Hospital and was mentioned in the Colne programme.
As the game came to an end we were having more chances but the keeper
made some more good saves.
On walking back to the station I received a text message to say that
Cobham had beaten AFC Wallingford 3-2 with two late goals. So it was
a good day all-round
Just like to comment about one person who watched the match it would
appear he lives in the houses at the clock end of the ground and volunteered
to paint a window frame between 3pm and 4:45pm on Saturday afternoon,
thing was this window frame overlooked the pitch so I think he spent
most the time watching the game, I am sure he had some explaining
to do about why it was taking him so long.

24/01/2004 All Change At Farnham Town - Today we make the trip down to Farnham and the important news at just after 10am today is that the game is on. Farnham was a team that we had problems with last year as we needed a last minute Danny Oakins goal from a free kick at Farnham and had a 0-0 draw at home late on in the season. With Farnham currently 2nd from bottom of the Combined Counties table they have made a number of changes they have a new manager from tom today in Matt Beard (brother of Mark Beard of Kingstonian) and have bought in a few players with Ryman Division 1 experience From Hampton and Richmond they have Enrico Grimm and from Molesey Shane Franklin has come in. So once again it could be a tough game for us. |

23/01/2004 Saturday's Team News - So the normal straight forward job of selecting the starting XI has been stopped this week as a number of players are out injured and could result in a few unusual faces in the line up.One player in the squad who may not be familiar is Micky Fernandez. Micky has been a life long fan and got a chance for the reserves earlier in the season after he had been training with the squad and now with a few injuries he get his first call up into the first team squad, so good luck Micky.
Also on the official
site is details of a new player who will be with the reserves
tomorrow afternoon when they take on Fleet who they beat 10-0 at the
start of the season the game is played at Hampton & Richmond's ground
with a 3pm kick off. |

Dons Trust Statement - The Dons Trust has issued a statement
that can be read here
regarding a number of issues as well as a number of appointments to
the board following the Dons Trust Board Meeting on Wednesday night.
The people who have been added to the board can only go to enhance
the already elected members of the board. |

23/01/2004 Fancy Being In The Programme? - I know a lot of people who read this site are based overseas and therefore I am printing a request from Charlie Talbot the programme editor: -
Are you a Don abroad whose country of residence hasn't been in the
programme yet in the "A Don in..." feature? So far, we 've had Holland,
Germany, Cyprus, Norway... Sweden and the USA are due to go in soon.
Even if your country has been in, we'd still like to hear from you.
Do you want to tell us why you are a Don, how long for, what people
say where you are when you explain who you support, how you keep in
touch Etc Etc? I know of regular posters in Lux and Dubai for a start
- anyone interested in doing a 500 word piece for the programme on
the above lines, drop me a line. Charlie
If you would like to be featured drop Charlie an e-mail at editor@afcwimbledon.co.uk
with details of where you are and you could be featured in a future
programme. |

Travel To Farnham - On Saturday we make the trip to Farnham
Town in league action. If you are going by train it's about a 20 minute
walk through the town centre but if I remember right from last year
you pass a number of nice pubs on the way, and then there is a fairly
big clubhouse at the ground.
If you are going by train the suggested trains from Wimbledon are
the 29 or 59 minutes past the hour trains and change at Woking, once
at Woking you need to get the 59 or 29 minute past the hour train
to Farnham this should arrive at 40 or 9 minutes depending what train
you got, the journey time is about 1 hour 15 minutes from Wimbledon.
Once you get to Farnham you need to walk into town and then turn left down west street and this will take you to the ground. |
|
21/01/2004 Sanch Gets International Job - Lawrie Sanchez was today appointed manager of Northern Ireland. Lawrie has already been down to Kingsmeadow once so it would be nice if he was to come down on a scouting mission before the world cup qualifiers get under way. Good Luck Lawrie. |
|
21/01/2004 Tuesday Results - The results from Tuesday night are below only one league game was played in the end. In the cups Kingstonian beat Egham 3-2 after 4 goals were scored in 5 mad minutes in the first half to keep the score at 2-2, and in the Berks and Bucks Cup AFC Wallingford went down 2-1 to bitter rivals Didcot Town who's goals were scores by Ian Concannon. Sorry Stilez.

21/01/2004 Exeter Supporters Trust - You may have seen the message on the board from Exeter's supporters trust but if not I have repeated it below: -
I hope you don't mind me posting this on here. I am an Exeter City
supporter. Our Club is now also owned by the supporters (through our
Supporters' Trust). We are still working desperately hard to keep
our Club going after years of terrible mismanagement. We are trying
to raise money in any way we can. On our Trust web site we have a
'Marketplace' section where we auction all types of items, with the
profit going to the Trust. We currently have 3 items which would,
I'm sure, be of real interest to AFC Wimbledon fans. The items are:
- Matchday programme from the Sandhurst Town v AFC Wimbledon game

Can you Help? - As you are aware there is always a lot of help
need either on a matchday or in other tasks at our club. A team has
been put together to help coordinate who can help and what tasks they
can do. Therefore if you are able to help at all in any capacity for
example, Golden Goal, Raffle Sellers, programme sellers, turnstile
operators, help on Merchandise or even just help in sending out bulk
mailings that come around drop the club an email on volunteers@afcwimbledon.co.uk
with details of how you can help and the team will get back to you.
Remember the more people that help the better it will be for the club. If
you are an existing volunteer you are asked to reply as well so that
the database can be kept right up-to date. |

19/01/2004 FA Vase Draw - In case you are interested I have added the draw for the 5th round of the FA Vase to the site. A little bit of Dons interest is that Lee Passmore played for Chertsey Town in there victory at the weekend they now take on Bideford in the 5th round. |

Vase Dreams Shattered - One day on and the disappointment of
losing in yesterdays game is still there but I am sure that we will
pick ourselves up and get back to winning ways at the earliest opportunity.
Before I start the write up can I just say I wont be going into the
allegations that lead to the problems at the end of the game, the
reason for this is that there is likely to be action taken by the
authorities over it and I wouldn't want to suggest things that did/didn't
happen and could effect us at a later date.
AFC were defending the west bank end of the ground during the first half and it soon showed that it was going to be a tough game with Matt Martin called on to make a save as early as the second minute of the game. And then as Colne continued to push forward a dons defender kicked the ball out for a throw and then Colne headed over the bar.On 11 minutes Colne took the lead when AFC failed to clear the ball and an effort from the Colne number 9 just crossed the line. It wasn't long before the scores were level as Colne were penalised for a free kick on the edge of the box and Ryan Gray stepped forward and curled it round the wall and into the back of the net. 13 minutes had been played and the score was 1-1.
The Colne attackers seemed to be going down at any opportunity in
the box and the ref either waved away claims or booked them which
he did on two occasions. Then on 36 minutes a Colne attacker went
down in the box the ref waved away the penalty claim but awarded a
corner this seemed a very strange decision but this was played into
the box and headed home to make the score AFC Wimbledon 1 Colne 2.
As the whistle blew for half time there was a feeling that Colne were
trying to con the ref and a couple of players and officials from AFC
spoke to the ref as the players left the pitch.
The first half had clearly not been our best and Colne had played
well, no changes were made at half time and Colne kicked off with
us attacking the favored West Bank. Colne had a good chance to be
3-1 up when a corner came in and Matt Martin in goal dropped the ball
but quickly managed to clear it before a Colne striker could get to
it.
Our attacking play then stepped up a bit first up Danny Oakins fired in a shot from around 35 yards that just went inches wide, then Matt Everard headed over from a corner and then Kevin Cooper had a shot that just went wide of the goal.We then made two changes when Gareth Graham and Paul Scott came on for Lee Sidwell and Kevin Cooper. With about 30 minutes left we were trying to find the goal that would level the scores and possibly take the game into extra time first up Seb had a shot but this went over the Ryan had a header hit the crossbar and then Colne cleared the ball off the line.
With time running out Gareth Graham had a chance but it went just
wide. Colne had a golden opportunity to wrap the game up as they broke
on the counter and with an open goal there striker managed to put
the ball over from 6 yards, it was a miss like Ronny Rosenthal or
Ryan Giggs in the pass but the score was still 2-1 to Colne. In the
closing minutes the Colne number 3 was sent off. We continued to press
forward in the closing minutes and couldn't convert any chances and
the ref blew the full time whistle to send us out of the FA Vase.

16/01/2004 FA Vase Fever - So tomorrow we take part in the first National round of the FA Vase when we play Colne of the North West Counties League Division 2. Colne arrived at the ground tonight before training at the athletics track while there officials had a look around and a chat with a few of us at the ground. As you would expect they are very much looking forward to tomorrow and think it will be a very good game.
We have named a strong squad and it can be seen on the official
site. The pitch is looking very good considering all the rain we have had over the past week and the game should be in no doubt, some main stand tickets are still left so I would recommend if you wish to sit to arrive early the ticket office opens at 13:30, if you require terrace tickets the turnstiles will also open at that time. Lets have a big crowd for Saturdays game and get behind the lads. |
|
16/01/2004 Stay Around On Saturday Evening - On Saturday evening following our FA Vase match there will be a Karaoke evening in the main bar, anybody who remembers the old days at the Farley will know these are good evening so all are welcome to either get up and sing or just stay around and have a few more drinks. |

15/01/2004
15th January 1999 - On the 15th of January 1999 a new Website
hit the net, at the time I don't think it even had a name and in the
first few weeks of it's existence it got about 10 hits a day 5 years
later that Website is now getting 900 visitors a day and as you may
have guessed you are one of them people as today itmustbedons.com
is 5 years old.
On the day the site launched it was based round an English premiership
club and the news was that "Wimbledon FC LTD" were about to spend
£7.5 million on John Hartson, 5 years later the news comes thick and
fast as we support a club in the Combined Counties League. If you
want to have a look at the original news you can by clicking here.
So to everyone who has visited the site over the past 5 years Thankyou
and I hope you enjoy it as much as I enjoy producing it. Here's to
the future and I think you will find it will continue to go from strength
to strength. |

In Wallingford's game they were 3-1 up at half time and had a number
of chances in the second half but they were reduced to 10 men when
Bradley Ward was sent off for calling the ref a cheat and is likely
to get a 35 day ban.

10/01/2004 We're Only Human - So after a run from the start of the season of 21 league games winning in a row the run came to an end at Sandhurst Town after a 2-2 draw.
So a return to the ground where we played our first league game and
once again over 1,000 people made the trip and although not the lovely
sunny day that we had last year Sandhurst still looked really nice.
They had put up the signs to the ground for those arriving by train
and the programme was only 50 pence although there appears to have
been a glossy cover version available for £1.00.
The starting line up for AFC had a number of changes with Matt Martin
in goal, Darren Dobinson at Left Back, Andy Sullivan at Right wing
and Paul Scott starting for Kevin Cooper who wasn't on the bench.
The conditions were very muddy and AFC were attacking the changing
rooms end of the ground.
Straight from the kick off Paul Scott broke through on goal but as
he was closed down he played the ball out to the left but Grays cross
went out of play. In the first 15 minutes we had the better chances
as the players tried to find there footing in playing on the muddy
conditions. The best chance was when Danny Oakins played the ball
through to Joe but he miscontroled it and it went for a goal kick.
Following an AFC corner that was collected by the keeper Sandhurst launched an attack Simon Bassey was caught out and Matt Martin was called in to save us and stop Sandhurst taking the lead.
Then on 21 minutes AFC took the lead Ryan Gray fired in a corner and
it appeared to go in off Sandhurst number 8 Grant Nesbitt. 10 minutes
later we had a chance to make it 2-0 but Joe's effort hit the post
and was cleared. 38 minutes into the game AFC Wimbledon were awarded
a penalty when Danny Oakins was pushed in the box at a corner by the
goalkeeper the ref saw it and awarded the penalty, Andy Sullivan stepped
up and fired it home to put us 2-0 up.
As the half drew to an end Paul Scott almost put us 3-0 up but his
shot hit the top of the bar and went out for a goal-kick We went in
with the score Sandhurst Town 0 AFC Wimbledon 2 meanwhile in the other
local game it was Godalming & Guildford 0 AFC Wallingford 1
At half time Sandhurst made a couple of changes. The first chance
of the half came to the dons via Gavin Bolger and the keeper made
a great save. 15 minutes into the half we had a strange decision when
the linesman gave offside against Sandhurst even though it had come
from a dons back pass. Sandhurst had had the better of the half so
far and looked more attacking.
Gareth Graham replaced Gavin Bolger who had picked up a knock in the first half. Then with 20 minutes of the half played the dons made a bad back pass it was intercepted by Sandhurst attacker and he went round Matt Martin and fired into an empty net. Sandhurst 1 AFC Wimbledon 2The next good chance came for the dons but the ball bobbled just in front of Seb Favata and his effort went over the bar from close range. We seemed to be taking it in turn to shoot now as Sandhurst went up the other end and an effort went wide and then we went up the other end Gray crossed to Sully who hit the side netting from tight angel.
The crowd was announced as 1,027 and we were awarded a free kick on
the edge of the box Gareth Graham stepped up to take it but it hit
the wall, the ref blew his whistle and said it should be retaken as
Sandhurst moved this time Gareth curled it round the wall and it was
aiming for the top corner but the keeper pulled off a top save to
keep the score at 2-1 to AFC.
With 15 minutes left we made a couple of changes Joe and Simon Bassey
were replaced by Jamie Angel and Steve Gibson. Sandhurst were causing
us problems and were pressing forward as we do and had a number of
corner from one of the Matt Everard was forced to head over his own
bar from close range. As the game enter 5 minutes injury time Sandhurst
had another corner and this time they converted it to make the score
Sandhurst 2 AFC Wimbledon 2.
As the clock was ticking down neither team could convert any chances although Sandhurst did finish the stronger of the two.
As the full time whistle blew our 21 winning game run came to an end
but we are still unbeaten in the league. Perhaps this result will
do us some good in terms of it will release the pressure that was
building up on winning every league game we play this year. As the
player left the field they looked really disappointed. This was a
game that they most probably thought they could win but it should
be remembered that when we play at Kingsmeadow they gave us problems.
As the Sandhurst player left the pitch they got a round of applause
from a lot of the AFC Fans. Sandhurst will always hold a special place
in our heart so if we did have to have our run broken I and many other
people would prefer it to be there.
The important thing is for the player to regroup work out what went
wrong and to get back on the winning run next Saturday when we play
Colne in the FA Vase.
