Keeper Changes - Lee Carroll has left the club following an
offer to play for Northwood in the Ryman Premier division. I am sure
everyone wishes Lee all the best and thanks him for his time at AFC
Wimbledon. Over on the official
Site you can see about the replacement who should be in action
from this weekend, As Ross cant play on Wednesday night Matt Martin
will be in goal. As mentioned on the official site Ross was at Withdean
last year and he ended up with a championship medal with withdeans
record being played 46 won 40 drew 4 lost 2 for 143 Agi 32 Lets hope
that we end up with a similar record and Ross gets another medal.

Statement On Bonus Payments - When Terry was dismissed last
week the club announced that they were looking into another possible
problem and over the weekend suggestions appeared that it was regarding
a bonus that had been promised to the players if they were to win
the league, that the board were not aware of. The club have now released
a statement regarding this and you can read it by clicking here.

|
23/02/2004 One Year Without a League Defeat - Following Saturday's win we have now gone a complete year without a league defeat. The last defeat was on 22nd February 2003 to Withdean at Kingsmeadow when we lost 2-0. The complete League record over the past 12 months is
| Played 43 |
Won 41 |

Raynes Park Vale & Bedfont Match Reviews - So we have played
2 games since Terry's departure and things are looking good on the
pitch. First up were Raynes Park Vale in the league cup and we sent
them away with another 5 goal defeat, after goals from Sullivan, Gray,
Bolger Frankum and Cooper.
On Saturday it was Bedfont turn to visit Kingsmeadow and what looked
like it would be a tricky game with them doing well in the league
once again turned in to a very good dons display to take home the
points and record our record home victory. The first goal came from
Matt Everard and we were 2-0 up at half time thanks to Gavin Bolger.
At half time Nicky swapped things round with Paul Scott coming on
for Kevin Cooper. Within 10 minutes of the start of the second half
Scotty had scored twice to give us a 4-0 lead. Next on the score sheet
was Danny Oakins before Scotty completed his hat-trick the scoring
wasn't over and both Sullivan and Gray added to give a full time score
of 8-0. |

a Statement to WISA you can read it by clicking here.

20/02/2004
The Last Seven Days Seven Days - The past seven days has seen
a lot of shock and mixed reaction over events that have occurred as
we now know Terry Eames was suspended last Friday pending a disciplinary
hearing that took place on Wednesday. The outcome of this was that
Terry was dismissed as manager, and Nicky English has been put in
charge of the team, In Nicky's first two games in charge we have scored
14 goals and so it looks like people on the pitch haven't been affected
too much.
When AFC Wimbledon was set-up there were always going to be difficult
decisions to be made along the way and it's fair to say that this
has been the biggest by far. You may or may not agree with it but
it's important that we accept it along the road we will also have
more big decisions to make but the first one is always the hardest.
And a Message to Terry and his Family, thank you for everything you have done for our club over the past 18 months, you will always be remembered as the first AFC Wimbledon Manager and have left us with a very good squad to continue the brilliant performances we have had on the pitch. We hope to see you again in the near future. |

Ladies Beaten In Cup - On Sunday Morning the Ladies lost 9-0
to a very strong Arsenal side. I would like to say well done to them
for getting to the Semi Finals and I am sure that playing a team as
strong as Arsenal was good experience for them.
At time of writing I am not sure of the Under 14's score but they were 2-0 down at half time. |
|
15/02/2004 Nine Out Of Ten For Nicky - Saturday saw us play at Leatherhead against bottom of the table Chessington United, the suggestions earlier in the week were that Chessington United had improved and had a number of new players and unlike earlier in the season the game shouldn't be as one sided as it was when we met at Kingsmeadow.
On arrival at the ground the main talking point was the suspension
of Terry but with little information known people hoped we would be
able to do a job on the pitch. With Harvey away in Dubai we would
se atleast one change from the previous week with Darren Dobinson
starting at left back, Kevin Cooper also joined Joe up front Steve
Gibson also returned to the right back position with Simon Bassey
on the bench.
The game started with AFC kicking off and attacking the covered end
of the ground. Our first chance came on the 6 minute mark when Matt
Everard who was up on an attack hooked the ball goal bound but this
was stopped on the line. 4 minutes we were 1-0 up and it was a brilliant
goal, Joe Sheerin played the ball to Kevin Cooper who passed it
to Ryan Gray who fired it into the top of the net.
The Chessington keeper was being forced into a lot of action and he seemed to be punching the ball out of his box more than catching it. Then on 21 minutes we had the goal a lot of people had been waiting for Joe played the ball to Andy Sullivan who ran into the box before crashing to the ground but the ball went to Kevin Cooper to fire in our 100 league goal of the season and give us a 2-0 lead.
As the 30 minute mark approached on the clock Gavin Bolger got on
the score sheet after Kevin Cooper layed the ball off to him. With
the result looking safe Danny Oakins thought he would fire in a shot
but it went wide of the goal. The half time whistle went and we want
in 3-0 up.
It was only 5 minutes into the second half when we were on the scoresheet
again when we went 4-0 up this time Andy Sullivan set up Ryan Gray
for a 4-0 lead. With a comfortable lead it allowed Nicky to make a
change on the hour mark with Seb Favata being replaced by Noel Frankum,
just before the substitution we won 5 back to back corners and were
continuing to put Chessington under pressure.
3 minutes after the change Joe Sheerin got his name on the score sheet
after Matt Everard headed the ball down to Joe. We were quickly 6-0
up when Kevin cooper got his 2nd of the game from close range on the
65 minute. Nicky made another change with Simon Bassey coming on for
Joe Sheerin this meant we had a bit of a change around with Gavin
Bolger going up front. On 69 minutes we were 7-0 up there is a bit
of discussion on who got the goal with both Danny Oakins and Matt
Everard claiming it but it would appear that Danny has been awarded
it.
With us now level with our record score it was a question of would
we get to eight for the first time and it looked like we had when
Matt Everard scored from close range but the ref suggested there was
a push on the keeper so the score remained at 7-0. With time running
out the move of Gavin Bolger up front seemed to work as he scored
our goal to give us a new record score of 8-0 but the scoring wasn't
over yet as Kevin Cooper decided he wanted to take the matchball home
on his birthday as he scored gain to make the score Chessington United
0 AFC Wimbledon 9 (NINE).
So although we had the ball in the back of the net 10 times only 9 of them counted this was a brilliant professional display by the players and we can be proud of all them as we always are.The Man Of The Match vote is open and will be until Wednesday evening so please click below to vote: - |

Other Sunday Action - Two other games of note today at 13:30
at Kingsmeadow the Ladies Reserves are playing against Surrey University
in a friendly game. So if you are in the area pop by and enjoy the
game. This morning the Under 14 side have possibly there toughest
game of the season when they take on Epsom Eagles in a top Vs second
league battle. The under 14's have won every game so far this season
lets hope they can win today as well. |

15/02/2004
Ladies London Cup - This morning the Ladies are playing Arsenal
Ladies in the Semi Final of the London Ladies Cup. Arsenal are one
of the best teams in the country and it will be a good test for our
Ladies. The reason for the early kick off is that this afternoon two
of the AFC Wimbledon Ladies need to travel up north so they can meet
up with the England Under 17 and Under 19 squads, if the game had
been played this afternoon they wouldn't have been able to play in
the semi final. |

Championship Manager Becomes Football Manager - As you may
be aware changes have happened at our main club sponsor SIGames and
they have today announced that from the back end of this year they
will be launching a new game called "Football Manager 2005". Now if
that name sounds familiar to people in the late 20's early 30's like
myself it's due to the fact that before the days of Championship Manager
the football Management game to have was Football Manager.
At the moment the SIGames
Website is struggling to cope with the number of visitors that
it is getting (suggested over 10,000 a second earlier today) so I
have mirrored some screenshots of the new game that are interesting
to us. More screenshots (non AFC ones) can be seen over at the Sega
Site. Click on the pictures below to see a bigger version.

2nd AFC 5 Asides- The second AFC Wimbledon 5 Aside competition
will take place on Saturday 26th June 2004. Here is the information
on it.
Dear All,Attached are details about the 2nd AFC Wimbledon fundraising 5 a side tournament, to be held on Saturday 26th June 2004.This time there will be only 32 teams, rather than 40. Those people involved last time will remember that having 8 groups of 5 teams, meant that too many teams had long gaps between games. So I am limiting it to 32 teams : 8 groups of 4 teams - which makes logistical sense. I will, as I did last year, keep 5 teams in reserve, as people do always drop out at fairly short notice.
To avoid disappointment and annoyance all round, I will only be accepting
applications on the official entry form attached, accompanied with
a Cheque for £ 60 entry. No entry fee, no team. Please note that these
entry fee cheques will not be cashed until shortly before the tournament
( late June 2004 ) - and anyone pulling out up to 5 days in advance
will have their Cheque returned - so they will not lose anything.
Entries should be sent in by post only, NOT by email.
I anticipate that the tournament will again be popular - so the sooner you get your entry form and payment sent to me, the more likely you are to get a place in the tournament. When I have received your application, I will respond by email / phone ( preferably email ) to confirm your team's place. Any questions, please let me know by e-mail.Kind RegardsMark Lewis
You can download the application form here
and the rules here. If you get asked for a password click cancel and it should open.

Ten Men Dons In Victory - With us taking on Ash at Kingsmeadow
we were hoping for the same scoreline as the two pervious league matches
against them where both times we had come away with 5-3 victories.
The first surprise of the day was when the team line up's were announced
and Kevin Cooper was on the bench with Paul Scott partnering Joe up
front. On the right side of the pitch Andy Sullivan was starting.
The game started with us defending the west bank end of the ground.
The game started slowly and the first action came on the 7 minute
mark when we won a corner but this was cleared. On round about the
15 minute mark we started to get more attacking with first Danny Oakins
having a shot that just went wide of the goal, Then Gavin Bolger had
an effort saved in-between Lee Carroll had been called into action
making a good save.
We had started to find our feet and we were making some good attacks
down the wings first Bassey fired in a cross that went across the
box and just past Ryan Gray at the back post. Then Joe had an effort
and it went just wide. Next up it was Joe's turn to supply the cross
and a Harvey shot went just wide of the goal.
In the 31st minute Ryan Gray had the ball in the box and was pushed
and a penalty was awarded he stepped up and fired it had into the
back of the net to put us 1-0 up.
The big talking point came on 42 minutes when a back pass forced Lee Carroll to come running out of the box and he appeared to slip as he got near the attacker, the attacker went round him and from where I was sitting it appeared that Lee tripped the player up it was outside the area so was only a free kick but after talking to his linesman Lee Carroll was sent off. With no keeper on the it was who would go in goal and Danny Oakins stepped up to show us what he could do. The freekick was cleared, the last bit of not of the first half was Paul Quinn came on for Andy Sullivan on 44 minutes so that we had 4 in Defence again. We were 1-0 up at half time and it was going to be hard work in the second half, news came through that Southall were 1-0 up at Wallingford and it would be important to atleast match Wallingford's result.
As the teams lined up for the second half Paul Scott was playing up
front on his own and Joe had dropped back into more of a midfield
position. The second half was going to be about doing the simple things
in football keeping the ball away from the defence and just holding
it up, it was likely that it wasn't going to be good to watch but
this could end up being a big day for us.
The start of the half was going well Paul Scott was holding the ball
up well and winning us throw-in's, corners and just keeping the ball
in our attacking half. We also had the occasional effort with the
one of note being from Gavin Bolger.
Then on the hour mark Danny Oakins had the ball and fired a ball upfield and it caused real problems and ended up bouncing in the other penalty box how brilliant it would of been if it had gone in but it cleared the lines and that was the important thing. We continued to attack and first Scotty had an effort that was saved and then Joe had a shot that went wide. Then on 71 minutes we had the cushion of a 2nd goal when Matt Everard scored from close range following a Ryan Gray free kick. With us 2-0 up Paul Scott who had played a brilliant game was replaced by Darren Dobinson, Ryan gray was also replaced by Lee Sidwell with 10 minutes to go. With just a few minutes left on the clock Danny Oakins pulled off a brilliant save to keep the score at 2-0.
The talking point after the game was the fact that yet again a team
had struggled when they had the extra man, and with an inexperienced
keeper in goal they hadn't fired in shots from all directions, in
fact on the statistics we had more shots in the second half than they
had. This was a brilliant win and all-round performance and with the
news coming through that Wallingford had gone on to win it showed
how important it was.

Andy Auguste - It's with sadness that I bring you information
that Andy Auguste was killed last weekend in a car crash. The name
might not be totally familiar to you but Andy was one of the many
lads who turned up for the trials on Wimbledon Common when AFC was
getting started. Andy's story was a bit different to everyone else
as he had traveled down from the Oxford area to attend the trials
but due to his car breaking down on route he ended up arriving an
hour late at the trials. He spoke to one of the coaches on arrival
and was told to join one of the groups he then realised that he had
left his boots in his car so he was forced to borrow a pair before
joining in. From what I can remember Andy made the first cut but didn't
ever play for us in any of the pre-season games but it's important
to remember that if it hadn't been for the like of the guys like Andy
we may not have had a club.
Andy went back to Marlow and the local paper report on him can be
seen by clicking here.
I am sure that all AFC fans will want to send there condolences to
Andy's family and friends. |

06/02/2004 Book Launch At Kingsmeadow on Saturday - On Saturday the Paperback version of "The Ripple Effect" by Dominic Holland is launched at 13:00. For each person who buys a copy of the book, where proceeds go to the club, they will be given a 'Jam' Doughnut. One of the Doughnut's wont have any Jam in them and if you get that Doughnut you will win a matchball sponsorship for a future AFC Game.
For people who don't know the book is set around a football club where
the chairman decides to sell the ground to property developers, to
take revenge one of the supporters makes a batch of Doughnuts that
doesn't have any jam in and the chaos that is caused when people don't
have Jam in there mid morning doughnuts.
It's a brilliant book and well worth getting, you will also be able to get it signed by the author. The launch will take place in the back bar from 13:00. |

01/02/2004
Open Meeting Report - Before Saturday's game an Open meeting
was held in the back bar as ever it was well attended with all seats
taken and a number of people standing round to listen to what Kris,
Ivor and Erik had to say.
Kris opened the meeting and started off
by talking about the Colne situation he said that the club were investigating
the fans on the pitch, The FA were investigating the incident at the
end of the game as well as the allegation from a number of the AFC
players. The players had the full support of the club but it was a
case of wait and see what action would be taken.
Erik handed out copies of the budget for
the 2003/04 season and pointed out a number of facts the budget for
players expenses for the year was £110,000 comparing this to other
clubs he reckoned we were about 4 times higher than any other team
in the Combined Counties and was able to compare it to Sutton who
recently published there accounts for the 2002/03 season they paid
out £125,000 in expenses.
At some point during this year (round
about October) the interest we pay for the stadium will increase by
1/4 to round about 10% per year. The amount we owe for the ground
has been reduced by £100,000 as the second lease wasn't acquired within
the 5 months agreed. The approximate amount we ow owe is £1,150,000.
At the previous open meeting Erik had
asked if people objected if the clubs were to consider asking people
for loans where interest would be paid. Nobody present objected and
therefore Erik and the finance working group are in the final stages
of putting together a proposal that people loan money to pay off the
loan at an interest rate specified by the lender but up to 4%. The
loan would be for a fixed term of 3 years with a 1 year notice period
so in effect 4 years. Erik pointed out that the loan would be unsecured
and they might ask people at the end of it to extend the loan. The
minimum amount of the loan is expected to be round about £1,000 but
for people who cannot afford a lump sum a direct debit system may
well be set up where you commit to a monthly amount. Erik hopes that
this would raise somewhere between £250,000 to £500,000 and would
therefore based on people asking for 4% interest would reduce the
monthly interest payments by somewhere between £1,250 - £2,500. In
the event that the £1,100,000 any additional money would go towards
buying the second lease.
Erik said that the club was at present
ahead of budget for the year but it was important that people keep
focused on paying off the loan and therefore meaning that more money
was coming into the club.
Ivor then spoke about commercial issues
he started off by talking about the number of playing kits that our
teams uses and said that it is in the region of 600 kits a season
this is for all teams from Under 10's through to First Team. He asked
for peoples views on two new kits for next season he said that originally
last year the plan was that we would just change one next season but
a hitch had come up in that plan. The major reason is that there is
a strong possibility that Sports Interactive the clubs shirt sponsor
could well be about to extended the current deal for a further period
of 2 years and this could create a problem in the future. Sports interactive
are now the official shirt sponsor for every team that AFC Wimbledon
run.
The second problem is that we may have
to change kit supplier investigations are underway at the moment to
see if Tempest can supply us next season as the current material is
not popular with the payers and is not as good as it could be. A show
of hands was in favor of two new kits and it is possible that a competition
will be held in the next few weeks asking supporters to design a new
kit before a panel decides on the winning entry.
If Sports interactive do sponsor us next
season they will have a new logo as the set-up has changed the new
logo is below and has been taken from the Sports
Interactive site.
Ivor mentioned a couple of events coming up including a boxing evening
at Sandown Park details will be available soon. The meeting then went
on to talk about changes round the ground these included a suggestion
of seat season ticket holder paying a one off £25 extra payment so
that all the seats could be replaced in the summer into Yellow and
Blue, questions were raised along the lines of do the seats need replacing
or should any replacement seats be a neutral colour as it is still
Kingstonians ground as well. Questions were asked about photos being
put up in the bar it was explained that this was more appropriate
for the main bar as the back bar was often used for non football events
but could be looked at. A sign was also requested above the main stand
it was pointed out that this was put up for Kingstonians when the
stand was built and are expensive but it's something that would be
looked at.
The meeting was very positive and a reminder was made that the club
still needs volunteers so if you are able to help please e-mail the
club on volunteers@afcwimbledon.co.uk.
One other point Erik made was that although he handed out the budget
figures he was considering having a finance session where people could
learn more about the figures once a date is know I will provide more
information. |

01/02/2004 Windy Conditions Make Going Tough - After a week of extreme weather conditions Saturday saw some very strong winds and showers at Kingsmeadow but the game went ahead when all but one other game in the Combined Counties League was called off.
The first surprise of the day was as the players were coming in for
the final team talk and I was about to take my place in the ground
Ally Russell walked past me I know there had been talk of a striker
shortage at the club but I hadn't heard anything about Ally being
in the squad. As the Teams were led out Matt Everard was at the front
and it turned out that Joe Sheerin was out with Flu and therefore
Ally would be starting with Kevin Cooper upfront.
In the first half we were attacking the academy end of the ground
and the conditions were making it difficult for either side to make
any sort of impression on the game. It took 20 minutes for our first
chance on goal but a shot by Ally Russell was deflected off another
Dons player and went over the bar. Shortly afterwards a bad back header
by Simon Bassey forced Lee Carroll into action and he saved at the
feet of the Feltham striker.
Then on about 35 minutes AFC Wimbledon were awarded a penalty Kevin
Cooper hit it low to the keepers right but the keeper guessed right
and saved it. As the half came to an end we had a couple more chances
first the keeper spilled a Lee Sidwell cross and it went for a corner.
Then Gavin had a looping head from 20 yards that only just went over
the bar and then he finished the half off with a shot.
In the second half we had the wind behind us and hopefully it would
give us an added advantage. From round about the 15 minute mark it
looked clearly like we had stepped up a gear, first of all a free
kick was played into the box and only just went over Danny Oakins
head for a goalkick. Then on 67 minutes Gavin Bolger connected with
a lovely header from about 8 yards and it flew into the back of the
net and we were 1-0 up.
In the final 20 minutes there were 3 incidents of not first of all
Feltham had a good chance to level the score but the effort went wide.
Then We almost made it 2-0 when a corner got carried by the wind and
almost went straight in the net but the keeper punched it clear. The
final incident of not was one of the strangest ones I have ever seen
at a football match. All of the second half the Feltham keeper had
been having problems kicking into the wind he then took this goal
kick the flew into the air but didn't seem to clear the 18 yard box
it then proceeded to come back to him and ended up back in his 6 yard
box.
As the final whistle blew it was greeted by relief round the ground
this had not been a good performance compared to normal but the conditions
had more than played its part in it, but at the end of the day it's
3 more points on the table and that's all we needed.

Calendar Added To The Site - I have added a fixture calendar
to the site showing both ours and AFC Wallingfords games between now
and the end of the season. This will be updated with any fixture changes
and I will also add a couple of extra features to it. Having a quick
look at it I calculate that we need to drop points for AFC Wallingford
to overtake us between now and the end of the season, in other words
as it stands Wallingford are not due to play additional league games
when we are not down to play, this could of course change. To view
the Calendar please click here

January News Archived - With the January News file taking up
a lot of space and therefore taking a while to download I have decided
to archive it apart from the last few days. If you wish to still read
the earlier January news please click here.
