Travel To Woking - Right Friday night so I would recommend
traveling to Woking by train it's only about 20 minutes on a train
from Wimbledon and they are very regular it's about a 10-15 minute
walk the other end as well. |

Message To The Players And Management - Right this season has
been stunning we are proud of each and everyone of you only a small
percentage of players ever get a chance to play in a cup final at
any level and as Eminem said "You Got One Shot" at the Combined Counties
League Cup. From a supporter position we will be doing everything
we can do to cheer you on to victory but it's important to keep our
heads out on the pitch we have seen that we are capable of coming
back from being behind but remember North Greenford United want to
win the trophy as well. We are proud of each and everyone of you involved
in AFC Wimbledon. 16 Years ago A Wimbledon team went into folklore
when they won the FA Cup and this is the first final that supporters
have had to cheer since. So Do your best and so will we.

29/04/2004 Merchandise For Friday - Right the Merchandise sales have now stopped at Kingsmeadow and the remaining 221 flags and the rosettes are being transported to Westfield to be sold in the bar area before the game. Westfield have managed to get the bar open from 5pm on Friday and it will be open until 11pm in the evening they have confirmed to me and they would love to see as many dons as possible. Also at Westfield will be loads of Balloons which are being given away so we can turn Woking Football Club into a sea of Blue and Yellow. I think people are being offered to make a donation to the stadium fund for the balloons but this is optional.
The Official Site has done a brilliant preview of the final and you
can read it by clicking here.

29/04/2004 Reserves Win - Tonight I watched the reserves beat Bracknell 4-1 with the goals coming from James Earp and one of the Hill Twins we were 1-0 up at half time After we scored our second Bracknell pulled one back but we then pressed on and won with a couple more good goals. It was nice to see Danny Oakins, Lewis Taylor and Nicky English watching the game. |
|
29/04/2004
Day 6 Of 10 - Reserves are in action at Kingsmeadow tonight
and updates will be on the matchday service. So far in the five games I have seen 20 goals and 5 player sending off's.
|
|
29/04/2004 Flag Update - As you may have seen the Flags are on sale at a cost of £5 each and tonight from 18:30 they will be on sale in the middle bar at Kingsmeadow where you will also be able to buy AFC Wallingford terrace tickets before the game, the reserves are in action against Bracknell tonight, the Flags will also be being sold in the main stand during the game. No Flags will be on sale on Friday at Kingsmeadow but will be on sale from Westfield on Friday early evening.
People have asked if they can come down to the office during the day
(Thursday) to buy flags but to be honest it would be appreciated if
people didn't as we are so busy at the moment dealing with other things
like Wallingford Applications, season tickets as well as all the other
day to day items that go on. Remember that people in the office are
volunteer's I am not saying this to be a pain and we are trying to
make it easy for you by selling in the evening. (The above statement
as with most items on this site is not issued by AFC Wimbledon) I
hope you can understand this and appreciate it. |
|
29/04/2004 Guest Of Honour At Cup Final? - The Non-League Paper at the weekend suggested that we could have a very special guest of honour on Friday night at the Cup Final. The person suggested is an International Manager who has scored a goal in an FA Cup Final, so if this is the case it could be an even more special day. |
|
28/04/2004 Day 5 Victory leads To Day 9 Head To Head - Tonight I watched AFC Wimbledon Ladies beat Millwall Lionesses 2-1 at Kingsmeadow this now means that we go head to head on Sunday with Bristol City in a game that can see Bristol City win the league if they win and us beat Bristol City to 2nd place if we win.Tonight was the first time in years that I had watched ladies football and I was impressed with the quality of the game. Millwall took the lead after about 37 minutes when a shot from the right of the box was taken through the keepers hands due to the power to be tapped in at the back post. We had had the better of the half so it was disappointing to go in 1 goal down but in the second half we were awarded two penalties at the west bank end and both were fired home by Maria Bertelli to give us a well deserved win. Congratulations to the ladies and onward to Bristol we go. |
|
28/04/2004 Flags - At last night game there was a lot of talk about Flags for the final on Friday night I am sure an announcement will be made today as to how you can buy them and once I know I will post it on the updates as well. |
|
28/04/2004
Day Five - Tonight should be AFC Wimbledon Ladies Vs Millwall
Lionesses at Kingsmeadow but with all the rain of the bast 18 hours
and the news that the Kingstonian game didn't start until 20:30 last
night due to the rain I am a bit concerned if this will go ahead.
It's a game that needs to be played and also we need a win if we are
to catch Bristol City for 2nd place in the league. As with all the
games so far some sort of updates will be being produced and you can
view them by clicking here.

Cup Final Rehearsal Almost Washed Out - This evening we arrived
to find most of the North Greenford United pitch almost under water
and with both teams in a rehearsal for the Cup Final on Friday Night
it seemed that it was a chance to give a few of the younger players
a run out.
The AFC team had several new faces in it including Sam Elliott, Rob Hill, Joe Hill and Marc Skinner. Once the ref had decided that the game could be played it was a case of the players getting used to the conditions. AFC Wimbledon took the lead when following a corner on the Right had side taken by one of the Hill Twins it was headed home by Paul Quinn for his 3rd goal in 3 games. AFC Wimbledon's second goal was a lovely curling finish into the top corner by Shane Small-King and we went in 2-0 up.In the second half we made a couple of changes with Seb Favata, Danny Oakins and Matt Everard all getting run outs to replace Simon Bassey, Rob Hill and Sam Elliott. Danny Oakins moved up front but North Greenford scored a brilliant overhead kick just before the end but I am sure that when the teams line up on Friday evening we will see different players on display for both sides. The Man Of The Match Vote is now open please click below to vote: -
This was of course leg 4 of the Ten Out Of Ten Challenge So I am still on course to complete the challenge. |

Travel To North Greenford On Tuesday Night - On Tuesday night
we make the trip to North Greenford United for the pre-final game
and if you went to the game last year you may remember what a lovely
setup they have. If you are going by train you need to get a train
from Paddington to Greenford and then walk, last year they escorted
us from the station to the ground but if not you can find a map on
our official
site. |

Ten Out Of Ten Day Three - Tonight was stage three on the Ten
Out Of Ten Challenge and the reserves lost 3-1 at Epsom and Ewell.
We took the lead through James Earp but Epsom leveled just before
half time. In the second half Epsom scored twice more and we were
unable to convert some of the chances we had and in the final minute
Andrew Trfry was sent off for the dons. After the game one of the
coaching team said "they were sorry they had let us down" to Karen
who is also doing the challenge, but pointed out that it was an inexperienced
team that was out tonight. |

Under 14's Must Play Again Following Draw - This afternoon
the Under 14's drew 1-1 with Croygas Youth in the cup final at Merland
Rise. On a pitch that had a huge slope AFC Wimbledon took the lead
in the second half kicking down the slope and then with the last kick
of normal time Croygas leveled. The ref didn't even allow kick off
and the game went into extra time. In the final minute the Croygas
keeper pushed the ball round the post but we couldn't score from the
corner.
A replay will now be played and is due to be on May 9th May no time is know yet.
Well done to Ben Canham and the players on a very good performance
and what once again has been a brilliant season for them. It was nice
to see so many AFC Wimbledon fans present estimated at 300 as well
as Kris, Ivor, Trevor, Dobo Snr and Kevin Cooper to name just a few.

Combined Counties League Football Is Boring! - This statement
has never been so wrong as it was yesterday. After last years trip
ton Chalky Lane in January the place looked a lot different yesterday,
well the sun was shining and the pitch was covered in grass rather
than the mud bath of last season. In fact before the game Nicky said
to me that the pitch was as good as Kingsmeadow. The first thing that
I noticed was how the pitch sloped down towards one of the goals and
last year with us kicking down the slope in the second half we scored
three goals.
With the sun belting down people were looking for the shade that was
available so the covered part of the ground was very full by kick
off. We were kicking up the slop in the first half and as had been
the norm in most games the other side decided to charge straight at
us. And we were stunned when after just 28 seconds Ross Standen was
picking the ball out of the back of the net. Chessington & Hook had
played the ball over the defence and questions were being asked about
how many yards offside the winger was but after playing the ball into
the box a bit of a mix up happened and a suggestion that the final
touch had come off Steve Gibson.
So our first goal conceded since the Frimley Town away game but we
still had a lot of time to get back into the match. So when just 90
seconds later Matt Everard had the ball in the back of the net things
were looking OK until I point out that it was past Ross Standen and
after 3 minutes we were 2-0 down and possibly both own goals. The
team looked a bit disjointed for once and it seemed that Chessington
& Hook were using the slope really well. It was down to Ross to remind
the players that there were still over 80 minutes to go and to keep
there shape.
Then on 13 minutes we were back in the game first a Matt Header, at
the right goal, came to Paul Quinn who headed home and we were 2-1
down. We had begun to get back into the game and numerous chances
came the way of Cooper and Small King and good wing play by Ryan Gray
saw us keep pressing forward but we couldn't find a breakthrough.
Just as half time approached things started to get really silly, Seb
was dragged down in the box for what should of been a penalty and
the next thing it looked like Nicky English was asked to leave the
dug out and stand behind the barrier, later suggestions seem to be
that a couple of other members of the management team were also "Sent
Off" then as the ref blew the whistle for half time with us 2-1 down
Gareth Graham was sent off for presumably "Foul and abusive language"
on getting home it was suggested that Gareth may have said something
along the lines of "Ref I hope your second half is better than your
first half".
So we would have to play the whole of the second half with 10 men
and start at 2-1 down, then even before the second half had kicked
off Shane Small-King was booked no one knows what for but you can
see what was happening with the ref!
With us having the slope in the second half it was important to use it and we continued to attack via Cooper, Seb and Small-King Sullivan was bought on to the right wing for Paul Quinn and we moved to 3 at the back. Then as the half way mark of the half arrived Chessington & Hook scored a 3rd goal once again it looked offside as they broke down the wing but this time no AFC Wimbledon was there to put it into the back of the net so they scored there first goal of the game. So we were 3-1 down with 19 minutes to go was this to be where the unbeaten record was to go?
Darren Dobinson was bought on for Simon Bassey who will bee looking
for a new shirt after it was torn to bits by the shirt pulling that
had been going on. Then with 15 minutes to go Ryan gray scored from
a Shane Small-King cross and the score was now 3-2 to Chessington
& Hook. Two minutes later the ref pointed to the spot when Kevin Cooper
went down in the box and Kevin Stepped up to possibly score his 100th
goal for the club he hit it to the keepers left and it slammed into
the back of the net the scores were now level. But drama was about
to happen as a couple of minutes later two players were sent off first
Shane Small-King got a straight red so we were down to 9 men and the
number 5 of Chessington & Hook was sent off the thing that was strange
about this was that everyone nearby said it was the number 8 of Chessington &
Hook who punched Shane and nothing happened to him.
Then with about 5 minutes left the Chessington and Hook number 8 decided
he would have a go as goal keeper and handled the ball on the line
another penalty and another sending off and the same outcome at almost
the same spot, so e had gone from 3-1 down to being 4-3 up. With Cooper
having two goals for the afternoon he was replaced by Lee Sidwell
as the closing moments of this 9 against 9 match were played out.
But before the final whistle could be blown we had a moment that summed
up the performance by AFC in the second half. The ball was played
down the right wing and Darren Dobinson latched onto it the keeper
came rushing out and Darren managed to aim it towards goal but it
was going for a goal kick but rather than letting it go out of play
Darren chased it down before squaring it to Ryan Gray to tap home
and give us a 5-3 lead.
Just before the final whistle Matt Everard was near where I was watching I turned to him and said "Cheers Matt for making the game interesting", Matt Just Smiled. Well done Lads a brilliant performance. |

Spot The Difference - As Kevin Cooper Scored his 100th and
101st goals in an AFC Wimbledon shirt in what could of been his 100th
appearance for the club (just checking this out). have a look at both
goals hitting the back of the net, these were both penalties and you
could almost mark the same spot for both of them. The pictures were
taken by Richard Townley and I thank him for letting me use them.
If you click either of them you will see larger versions in a new window.

Leg 1 Completed - Right the first leg of the Ten AFC Matches
in Ten days has been completed and who says Combined Counties Games
are boring? Today AFC Wimbledon beat Chessington & Hook 5-3 away after
being 2-0 down after 3 minutes and 3-1 down with 12 minutes left.
In the second half 2 players from each side were sent off and AFC
Wimbledon were awarded 2 penalties both scored by Kevin Cooper so
he has now scored his 100th and 101st goals in an AFC Shirt. The other
goals were two for Ryan Gray and one for Paul Quinn. While the first
two goals were own goals scored by Steve Gibson and Matt Everard.

Can I See Them All? - Right OK here goes I am considering going
to see all the 10 games listed below that will be taking place over
the next 10 days from Saturday 25th to May 3rd - Can I do this? Well
to start with I will be at Chessington Hook, North Greenford, Woking,
Kingsmeadow on Wednesday and Thursday and Raynes Park Vale so that
is 6 of the 10 that leaves two trips to Epsom and Ewell's ground,
one to Tooting & Mitcham (on my doorstep (almost) and Bristol City
on the Sunday.
To make this a bit more interesting I would like to know if anyone
would be prepared to sponsor me for the Stadium Fund for attending
these games, with all money going to the stadium Fund. If so please
e-mail me at paul@itmustbedons.com
with details of how much and also any criteria for payment of the
sponsorship i.e. do I have to attend them all or will you still pay
if I attend say 5/10, of course any game I attend will also have updates
done here so you will gain as well. |

Saturday Travel News - Right Saturday's game is being played
at Chalky Lane opposite Chessington World Of Adventures, but there
is expected to be big problems parking. With brilliant weather expected
large crowds are expected at the World of Adventures and therefore
the car parks are expected to be full very early in the day. There
is no parking at the ground and therefore the easiest way to get to
the ground is by Train a shuttle service is running between Wimbledon
and Chessington South Train station and it looks like there are two
trains an hour departing Wimbledon at 09 and 39 minutes past the hour
and the journey takes 15 minutes. From memory last year come out of
the station turn right and then up to the main road and then turn
Left and then walk along that road until you come to Chalky Lane then
turn left and that leads to the ground I think it's about a 15 minute
walk. |

On Wednesday Evening Celtic Lost 2-1 at home to Aberdeen "the Dons"
and therefore only us and Arsenal are now unbeaten this season in
the top 8 levels of British football. |

21/04/2004 A Night Of History For The Dons - Kevin Cooper today wrote his own page in the history books of football in Wimbledon as he scored his 55,56,57 and 58 goals of the season in our 8-0 victory over Cove.
On Wednesday evening AFC Wimbledon played their first game at home
since being crowned Combined Counties League Champions and it turned
out to be a historic night. The first moment of drama of the evening
came about when Cove were awarded a penalty Ross Standen got caught
out coming for the ball and after the player went round him and then
cut back into the box he was challenged by Matt Everard who fouled
him and the ref pointed to the spot. The ball was hit to Ross's right
but he saved it and the score was 0-0.
The first goal of the evening was a brilliant lob by Jamie Taylor
over Adam Watts the AFC Fan who is the Cove keeper. It was only another
5 minutes before the second goal was on the board and this time some
lovely play between Darren Dobinson to Jamie Taylor who played it
to Cooper who curled the ball into the back of the net from the edge
of the box for his first of the night.
Another 5 minutes later and we were 3-0 up when Shane Small-King apparently
scored although Danny Oakins was lurking with intent trying to claim
the goal. Shortly after this a Darren Dobinson Shot smacked against
the post and it was still 3-0. With about 10 minutes of the half Danny
Oakins played the ball to Cooper who fired home for 4-0. The game
then got broken up bit as first an unwell Darren Dobinson had to leave
the pitch to be replaced by Simon Bassey and then a second cover player
was stretcher off and what later turned out to be a double break of
the leg.
We went in with a 4-0 lead and the points were once again safe in the bag.
The second half started a bit slower but about 8 minutes after coming
on Seb Favata converted a Gavin Bolger cross to put us 5-0 up. The
6th goal was a lovely move and finish by Kevin Cooper was his hat-trick
goal and the one that equaled Eddie Reynolds record of 57 goals in
a season so now with about 11 minutes remaining Cooper was to go all
out for the magic 58th goal. After Danny wasn't credited with the
earlier goal he converted from a corner for our 7th and then with
about 6 minutes plus injury time left on the clock Shane Small King
was fouled in the area and a penalty was awarded was this it was this
to see a 47 year record removed from the history books? up stepped
Kevin Cooper and he fired home for us to be 8-0 up and Kevin had his
4th of the game and 58th of the season. Congratulations Kevin Cooper
what a brilliant season you have had, and may it continue for the
rest of this and many more to come for AFC Wimbledon.
When the final whistle blew we had now gone 7 games without conceding
a goal so well done to all the players and backroom staff on an outstanding
achievement. (Report being typed now) |

Would You be interested in unofficial T-shirts? - As you may
have seen on Saturday I was wearing a "bootleg" T-shirt that had "2003/04
Champions AFC Wimbledon" over the left breast of the shirt in large
yellow text. The T-shirt is a fruit of the loom original full cut
T-shirt and from the details of it are as follows "100% Sofspun
lightweight Cotton Full cut styling Taped neckline for added comfort
Preshrunk tubular knit for maximum shape retention Twin needle stitching
detail on neck, sleeves and hem " Although I believe the merchandise
team are producing a champions range of T-shirts I would be prepared
to produce some of these with all profits going to the stadium fund.
If you are interested in either this type or a Cup final style T-shirt
that would have date and teams and venue in the same style on it please
drop me a line at tshirts@itmustbedons.com.
The T-shirts would be priced at between £8 and £10 depending on the
number and if I can get atleast 25 produced over 50% of that would
go to the stadium fund. I have produced below an approximate size
guide if you could state in your e-mail what size you would be interested
in and if an option of colour is available either Blue T-shirt Yellow
Text or Yellow T-shirt Blue Text.

We've Won The League Let's take Our Foot Off The Gas - After
confirming the league title last week you would think that the players
would take it a bit easy after a tough season but this was clearly
not the case based on today's performance. Steve Gibson returned to
the starting line up as Danny Oakins had been unwell during the week
Lewis Taylor started instead of Jamie Angell and Simon Bassey was
in midfield for Seb Favata who was away doing his coaching badge,
(Hope it went well Seb).
As the possible farewell tour of the Combined Counties League makes
it's final few stops a number of grounds will hold special memories
and Merstham is one of these grounds but if you went this year as
well as last year you will have been amazed at the changes that they
had made, these included new clubhouse, changing rooms and toilets
as well as dugouts and paving all the way round the ground, Turnstiles and a new fence, and although
a fair amount came through grants that they had got we did help pay
for some of it via our attendance at Merstham Vs AFC Games.
One of the memories of last season was the Famous "Merstham Cheese
Roll" where by the end of the afternoon they were loading everyone
up with as many rolls as possible so that they didn't have enough
left over to last them until Christmas 2008, so this year the joke
was no need to eat for a couple of days the Rolls at Merstham will
keep you going. So you can imagine the shock and horror at the ground
on hearing that by 14:30 the Cheese Rolls were sold out and only a
few Ham Rolls were left from too many last year to not enough this
year. With No rolls available the Hungry Womble masses converged on
the BBQ where a lovely burger was available and a roaring trade it
was doing as well.
Merstham player came out just before the dons and lined up in FA Cup final style as the PA announcer said "Please welcome the 2004 CCL Champions AFC Wimbledon" and Matt Everard led the players out. Both teams then lined up for a photo infront of the new clubhouse and then the game started. The Dons kicked off the game and were defending the main entrance end of the ground but also meant that they were kicking into the wind. The wind was really strong and in the opening minutes it showed that it could be difficult to gain control of the game.It took about 22 minutes before the first major AFC attacking action and it involved Steve Gibson and Kevin Cooper. Gibson played it to Cooper who had his back to goal but his turn and shot was blocked and cleared by Merstham. But it was a few more minutes before we scored our first goal Gavin Bolger did a lovely flick on to Kevin Cooper who fired it into the top corner we were 1-0 up.
With the first goal on the board we started to press forward a lot
more and a gray cross was volleyed over the bar by Shane Small-King.
We continued to press forward and a lovely link up between Gavin Bolger
and Jamie Smith saw Jamie dispatch the ball into the back of the net
and a 2-0 lead. Next on the score sheet was Gavin Bolger with his
1st of the afternoon with about 10 minutes of the half left Shane
Small-King made a brilliant run into the box and played it to Gavin
who rounded the keeper and put it into the empty net. Just before
half time Gavin Bolger hit his 2nd and our 4th of the afternoon with
a shot that although didn't have a lot of power went through the back
of the net, from where I was standing opposite the Dugouts there was
a moments uncertainty if it had gone in or had hit the side netting
but the goal was given and we went in 4-0 up.
At the start of the second half it looked like Shane Small-King and
Jamie Taylor had swapped positions and then on 7 minutes Gareth Graham
came on for Gavin Bolger. We continued to attack in the second half
but it wasn't until about 15 minutes before the end that we got our
next goal when Gareth Graham scored his first league goal of the season.
With the clock running down Paul Quinn got on the score sheet as well
to give us a final score of Merstham 0 AFC Wimbledon 6 and another
very good all-round performance from the team.
Thanks again Merstham for another good day and I understand that the
Merstham went round giving children Easter eggs and bits of cake as
well as shaking most of the crowds hands. What a lovely club.

Cup Final Confirmed - Within minutes of putting up the questions
yesterday the major one was answered on the Official
site The Cup Final will be played on Friday the 30th April 2004.
A Number of people have asked why a final is on a Friday night but
in my opinion the Final is the showcase of any league season and by
playing it on a Friday with no other games taking place it will allow
representatives of each league club to be present. Don't forget if
you get a fast train from Wimbledon Woking is 25 minutes away and
the ground a 10 minute walk and coming back train run to well past
midnight. Lets Pack that huge stand and cheer our boys on to celebrate
an incredible season. |

League Cup Final visit tonight to Woking to play Westfield just over
the road from where the final will take place at the end of the month.
My computer predicts a 1-0 victory for North Greenford. Also tonight
Withdean 2000 play Ash United and the prediction is a 2-1 away win
for Ash United. |

15/04/2004 Current Questions In The Office - As you may know I help out in the office 4 days a week and at the moment we are getting a lot of the same questions being asked so I thought I would put together a list of these questions and Answers as it currently stands. These answers are from me and not official Club words but I hope it helps. The Cup Final Do we know a date and Venue for the Cup final? We are waiting for official confirmation of the Cup Final date but when we have asked the Combined Counties League Before we were informed it would be Friday 30th April 2004 with either a 19:30 or 19:45 kick off at Woking Football Club. Can I buy Tickets In advance for the final?
Until we have the official details confirmed we wont know for sure
but it is unlikely that tickets will be sold in Advance and Woking
can hold over 4,500 people so everyone who wants to get in will be
able to.
If The Final is on the Friday what about the Reading Game on Saturday 1st May 2004? Once again it's all waiting on confirmation of the first date but it looks like the Reading Town game will have to be moved. Can we play Reading Town on Saturday 15th May 2004?
No due to the restructure meeting taking place on 9th May 2004 all
leagues must have completed their fixtures by May 8th.
League Restructure
What League will be in next season?
The answer to this is we don't know and more than likely wont know
until May 9th. If we are promoted we will be to a Step 4 division
that would contain teams like Tooting & Mitcham, Bromley, Met Police
and Newport (I.O.W).
AFC Wallingford Game Can I guarantee My Season Ticket Seat?
The answer to this is no, the reason being that we have allocated
"Block H" to AFC Wallingford and therefore the season ticket Holders
in that block have also got to be reallocated, by applying for a seat
as a season ticket holder we will allocate you either your seat if
possible or an equivalent seat in a nearby block.
I want to bring someone along who is not a season ticket holder can I apply for them now as well?
No, and if you do it is likely to delay your application and allocation
of seats. On The Official
Site it explains when you can apply, Season Ticket Holders Now,
Dons Trust Members from 26th April and General Sale from 4th May.
When can I buy a Terrace ticket? Terrace tickets are now on open sale to both Season ticket holders and non season ticket holders.
Don't forget to keep an Eye on the Official
Site for confirmation on the Cup Final information as well as
other end of season information. |

A Moments Reflection - Today is the 15th anniversary of the
Hillsborough Stadium Disaster when 96 football fans lost their lives
while watching the FA Cup Semi Final between Liverpool and Nottingham

A Nice thing About Winning The League At Walton - On Monday
a few people were talking about how they would like the league to
have been won on Saturday at Merstham rather than Walton Casuals different
reasons being given but in a way I found it fairly symbolic that we
won the league at Walton Casuals.
At the start of this season one of our first pre-season games was
a game at Kingsmeadow against a Watford XI and the proceeds from the
match went to Milly's Fund the fund was set up following the abduction
and murder of Milly Dowler who was a resident of Walton and we raised
awareness of the organisation. Robert and Sally (Milly's parents)
as well as Gemma her sister have been present at AFC Wimbledon games
over the past two years. So in a strange way by helping the Walton
community it's come back and helped us. |

Where Do I start - Word Of Warning the following report may
ramble and may contain emotion but it's how I saw Monday 12th April
2004 a date than many of us will remember for a long time if not the
rest of our life's
A Bank holiday Monday most people use it for a relaxing morning in
bed or a trip to the DIY store but like many AFC Wimbledon fans I
was awake at the crack of dawn and couldn't get back to sleep. As
today there was an outside chance that we could win the league. The
scenario was that to win the league we would have to pick up more
points than AFC Wallingford did in there game at Reading Town that
had a 11:30am kick off.
I arrived at Tooting Station for the 11:09 and was met by some tooting
regulars and we got the train to Wimbledon where we met some more
fans for the 11:33 to Walton. On arrival at Walton we got in a people
carrier and arrived at the ground just before 12:00 The Wallingford
game had been on for 30 minutes and the few people outside the ground
were asking if any news had come through.
Walton Casuals ground is right by the river and in a nice setting
and even 3 hours before kick off and an hour before the gates opened
the nearby pubs were reported as busy. Then just as half time was
about to be blown at Reading Town I phoned everyone's favorite Wallingford
fan "Stilez" who informed me that Reading were 1-0 up word got round
quickly and people were beginning to think well maybe we may be in
with a chance today, but people also remembered that on Saturday Wallingford
had been 1-0 down at half time but come back to win 3-1 so it wasn't
in the bag yet.
The number of people waiting to get in started to grow as 1pm approached.
Then a text message to say t was 1-1 at Reading. The gates opened
and we made our way into the ground and people kept asking me what's
the Wallies score, and how long left? With the sun shining people
took up there places on the terraces and in the 100 seater stand that
had been put up since our last visit to the ground. Then reports started
to come through that Wallingford had drawn and after a phone call
it was confirmed. It now meant that if we won the game we were champions.
The PA system had managed to dig out a collection that included "The
greatest Football Songs in the World Volume 8" and "The Best Of Chas
and Dave"
As kick off time approached announcements were made that the game
would kick off late due to the crowd at first they said it would start
between 15:15 and 15:30 in the end it was 15:20 before the game started.
As the players ran out they looked a bit nervous I think this was
down to the realisation that they could win the title by winning the
game and everything that they had aimed for this season could be about
to happen.
The opening minutes were a bit sloppy but then on 3 minutes a corner
was played into the box and there was Matt Everard to header his 22nd
goal of the season and put us 1-0 up. The ground erupted about 15
minutes later a dons free kick was taken by Ryan gray and it reached
Kevin Cooper who managed to fire it past the keeper for AFC Wimbledon's
2nd of the game and 150th league goal of the season. This really got
people thinking this could be it. As the team left the pitch they
looked a lot happier and it was 45 minutes from being possible Champions.
With it looking possible of going our way it was time to start thinking
about plans for the evening so a few phone calls were made and staff
were being contacted to man the bar at Kingsmeadow if we won.
About 20 minutes into the half Kevin Cooper scored again and we were
3-0 up. It was time for the party to start and as the game continued
to be played Cooper had a brilliant effort but it came off the bar.
Then the moment we had been waiting for the final whistle and the
three points that we were champions. Just before the whistle a couple
of the subs and injured players went to the changing room and came
back with a few bottles of Champagne as the whistle blew the bottles
were opened. The players ran to the crowd to celebrate and it wasn't
long before some were on the pitch. Before the game the badge stall
was selling a limited number of AFC Wimbledon champions badges and
I'm sorry football gods I bought two of them, as the lap of honour
was going round I got on the pitch and as they approached the tunnel
I walked up to Nicky English and handed him one of the badges with
the message "Thanks Nicky put that on" he looked smiled and just looked
happy and proud.
The players went into the changing rooms and supporters were asked
to move back so the players could come out again. As each player emerged
they threw the kit they had been wearing to the crowd to huge cheers.
We are the champions was played over the pa system and tears were
shed. 2 years ago our football world was ripped apart today we were
top of the world.
As it came to a finish at the ground it felt like things couldn't
get any better but they were only just getting started. I arrived
at Kingsmeadow at about 7:15 and the place was buzzing the car park
was almost full and loads of people were milling outside. The DJ had
started and everyone was over the moon. Most of the players had arrived
and were having a brilliant night.
The night was mainly music being played and drinking but a few people
got up and sang songs a few classics were played thanks to whoever
requested "It Must Be Dons" and thanks to Mags we had "We Are Wimbledon"
The players were just so happy the fans were so happy it was brilliant.
I left at just after 11 and people were still chatting about the brilliant
day.
Before I sign off this report a few thank you's - Kris, Ivor, Trevor,
Erik, Mags, Nicky, The management Team, All The players and there
families especially the Dobinson's and the Taylor's. We are so proud
of everyone of you and you all have played a part in this season and
we still have a lot to do.

Kevin Cooper so if you want to vote for him please do so by sending

*** Travel To Walton Casuals *** - Right Monday afternoon sees
us make the trip to Walton Casuals for the game that possibly will
see us win the league, this is dependent on us getting more points
than what AFC Wallingford get at Reading Town which kicks off at 11:30.
The easiest way to get to the ground is by train as a direct service runs from Wimbledon, although it's possible that the Clapham Junction service may be delayed and I understand that trains are not running from Earlsfield on Monday. The train times are below: -

From Walton-On-Thames station it's about 2 miles to the ground but
there is a cab office at the station so it may be worth cab sharing
or a bus may be put on I am not sure a map from the station to the
ground can be found here.
Once again Walton have a limit of 1,800 people in the ground so make
sure you arrive early. |

Semi Final Shattered Dreams Shattered - Since that brilliant
day back in 1988 when my team beat Luton Town every time I had seen
us in a Semi-Final we had failed to make it through to the final games
against Leicester, Spurs and Chelsea for the first team and from memory
Crystal Palace and Man United at Youth Level. So with the Semi Final
against Coney Hall there was always an element of concern would my
team be caught out again, or would this group of players let us reach
a final for the first time in 16 Years?
The first game showed that we would have to be on form as twice Coney had come back from a goal behind to level the scores so this time we would have to be at the ready for them. Before the start of the game a minutes silence was held for Jim Bacon the gentleman who had a heart attack at the first game and died a week later.
The game started with AFC Kicking off and attacking the covered end
of the ground where the AFC fans were standing. The only action of
note early on was that Andy Sullivan had to replaced after about 5
minutes when he picked up and injury and was replaced by Lee Sidwell.
After about 10 minutes we started to be a lot more attacking first
of all Jamie Taylor had an effort saved but then the first bit of
comedy when a back pass was played to the Coney Keeper he swung a
boot at it and missed it so dived on the ball and picked it up the
ref gave a free kick for a back pass and the Coney defence cleared
it for a corner.
On a muddy pitch we started to have the better of it and then of about
the 30 minute mark Cooper had a chance in the box but he was having
his shirt pulled as he was about to fire in a shot and the ref gave
us a penalty and sent the defender of Coney Hall off for being the
last man. Coops stepped up and fired the penalty home to put us 1-0
up. It was only a couple of minutes before we were celebrating again
and this time it was a classic Matty Everard header that slammed into
the back of the net and we were 2-0 up. We were on a roll now and
it was only a few more minutes when Cooper had his 2nd and our 3rd
of the night as he curled in a lovely shot from the edge of the box.
It was almost 5 minutes before the next goal but in the mean time
Coney had there Manager Chris Tucker sent to the stand, I am sure
he will make comments about the ref, us, the pitch, the day of the
week, but we shall have to wait and see.
The 4th goal was from Jamie Taylor and although we had subsequent
chances from Jamie Taylor and Danny Oakins we went in 4-0 up at half
time. It was safe to say that it looked like the tie was safe and
we could start thinking about the final at Woking. At half time the
Football Focus team interviewed some supporters including myself.
As the second half kicked off Coney came at us a lot more than they
had done in the first half and Ross was called into some action. As
the 60 minute mark came round Kevin Cooper scored his 3rd of the night
and our 5th. We continued to press and the only notable action in
the remained of the game was the ref got hit in the face by the ball
from a Coney player and in the last minute Coney Hall were reduced
to 9 men when a defender decided to handle the ball on the line and
a penalty was awarded. Simon Bassey stepped up and as he had never
scored a goal for us before it was his chance but he slammed it over
the bar. And last seen it was heading across London. The ref decided
that was enough for the night and blew his final whistle we were in
the final so a big thanks and well done to all the players and management.
The Man Of The Match poll is now open please click below to vote: -
The evening wasn't over yet a lot of fans were nervous that the last
train back from West Sutton to Wimbledon and Tooting was 21:54 so
they wanted to make sure that extra time wasn't needed which it wasn't
but after a quick round of applause for the players the trip to the
station was made as the train which was almost empty pulled in the
packed platform started singing "AFC Wimbledon" and we all piled on
and continued the singing as the train arrived at the next stop the
driver came on the intercom and started to talk to us we thought it
would be a stop singing message but he wanted to say well done, and
give us the scores from Europe, this got a big cheer and then a stop
later the ticket inspectors got on and started saying well done and
what a brilliant job we were doing. As everyone who was departing
at Wimbledon got off he said "You people have made my evening, and
I think you have a new convert" So to the Thameslink staff tonight
thanks for rounding off the day. |

busy so I thought I would try and give a run down of what is planned.
With the Coney Hall Semi-Final game on Thursday the current vote will
close on Thursday evening so if you haven't voted yet please do by
clicking below: -
Saturday will see a matchday text update from the Withdean game and
once I get home the new Man Of The Match Vote will be open.
On Monday The Walton Casuals Game Matchday service will be running but the Man Of The Match Poll wont open until Tuesday evening when the Coney Hall poll will close. The Withdean 2000 poll will be open until Wednesday evening.
One of the polls will have to be on the votecaster system but I will
transfer the votes across so that they are included. Also over the
weekend the Player Of The Year Poll will open and also the usual updates
will happen so it will be a very busy time on the site as the season
becomes to come to a close. |
|
06/04/2004 AFC Wimbledon Race Night - This Saturday following the Withdean 2000 game an AFC Race night will be held in the bar starting from 5:45. If you have never been to a race night before it's a fun evening where a number of horse races are shown on the big screen and you can bet on the one you think will win a % of each bet goes to the stadium fund and if you want to sponsor a horse it costs a £5.00 and you should be able to sponsor a horse on the night. Admission is free so if you fancy a fun evening hang around after the game and raise more money for the stadium fund. |

05/04/2004 I Might Be Mad But Two Bank Holiday Monday Game! - As you are aware if AFC Wallingford drop points on Saturday against Ash United we could win the league on Monday and in fact we may even win it depending on the Reading Town Vs AFC Wallingford result as that game kicks off at 11:30.
Now mad thought time is anyone up for Reading Town Vs AFC Wallingford
in the morning and then over to Walton Casuals Vs AFC Wimbledon for
a 3pm kick off. The problem I have is that it would have to be a car
trip and not having transport myself means I need someone who can
drive. With a 10:00am departure from Tooting Multimap.com suggests
a journey time of about an hour and with the game finishing at about
13:15 the journey time to Walton is suggested as 45 minutes so should
see us in Walton by 14:30. So If anyone would be interested in doing
this, only if AFC Wallingford don't get 3 points on Saturday could
you please e-mail me at Paul@itmustbedons.com
with name and telephone number and I will contact you on Sunday if
that is OK. |
|
05/04/2004 Correction To Weekend Scores and Tables - After uploading all the league tables it would appear that the issued score of Merstham 1 Reading Town 0 was wrong and the result was Merstham 0 Reading Town 1 this means that Reading can still get 105 points and therefore at present we are not guaranteed 2nd place. The League table has been corrected and the other tables will be corrected tonight. |

Case For The Defence - A Few people have said that the performance
on Saturday wasn't as good as it could of been but when you look at
the final score we won 3-0 and that's the main thing. One thing that
people may have overlooked yesterday was the back four yesterday.
It consisted of Lewis Taylor, Danny Oakins, Jamie Angell and Darren
Dobinson with only Danny and Darren being classed as regulars and
Danny coming back from an injury. So for us to keep a clean sheet
was brilliant and shows that we have strength in depth when needed.
A number of players have started to come through the reserves, who won yesterday 2-0 and this will be important for next season. |
|
04/04/2004
Countdown Is Beginning - As mentioned yesterday we are now
guaranteed to finish no lower than 2nd in the league and we need only
an additional 7 Points to win the league So this would mean tat we could
win the league at Merstham if we remain unbeaten, but it's possible
that the league could be clinched earlier as the table below shows:

So If AFC Wallingford drop points in any of the next two games they play both which could be difficult we could win the league at Walton Casuals on Bank Holiday Monday. If AFC Wallingford were to lose to Ash United and we beat Withdean they could only match our points total if they won all there remaining games and we didn't pick up any more points, and at present we have a better goal difference than them of +55. |

and have a drink or as I am sure there could be an event to celebrate
tomorrow!
