AFC Continue Supersonic Display - On Saturday we took on Bedfont
and once again the planes were taking off right over our heads. Unlike
last season the pitch was hard, dry and dusty and looked like it could
create a number of problems for us. On the team line up side of things
Matt Martin replaced Ray Merry in goal who had picked up an injury
towards the end of Wednesday nights game against Chessington & Hook,
Simon Bassey remained at Left back with Darren Dobbinson on the bench.
In centre of defence Jamie Angel started with Matt Everard as it was
rumoured that Danny Oakins had been caught in traffic on the way over
and therefore was switched to the substitutes bench. Ally Russell
and Kevin Cooper continued upfront with Joe Sheerin and new boy Paul
Scott on the bench.
The match started and a good crowd of over 1,100 had turned up it even contained a number of Burnley fans. AFC Kicked off the game and were attacking the "runway end of the ground" Our first chance of the game came on 4 minutes when Ally Russell had an effort on goal but this was saved on the line. Kevin Cooper tried to play the ball through to Gavin Bolger but this just got past him and went out for a corner.
As the clock reached the 10 minute mark we were awarded a corner and
after Ryan played the ball into the box it was cleared back out to
him he then floated one in and up rose Matt Everard for a trademark
header and to put us 1-0 up. As we re-formed for the restart Bedfont
tried to be adventurous and had a shot direct from the half way line
but this was caught on the line by Matt Martin, Bedfont must have
been of the thinking that with Matt Martin not as tall as most keepers
it would be worth an effort.
The ball was moved forward by AFC and it came out to the right wing
and Andy Sullivan who started a lovely run that took him past a number
of players and into the box it looked like Sully was trying to switch
the ball to his other foot and ready to fire in a shot but he slipped
and fell over. If he had managed to get the shot in and it had gone
past the keeper we could have been looking at one of the best individual
goals ever seen in an AFC shirt.
It was only a couple more minutes before we were 2-0 up as the ball
was played to the edge of the box and Kevin Cooper managed to put
the ball past the onrushing keeper. This was Kevin's 13th League goal
of the season and also meant he had reached 50 league goals in an
AFC shirt in 50 games he had started and 3 as a substitute.
As the half came to an end Matt Everard had a chance from a corner
to score his second of the afternoon but this was cleared on the line
by the Bedfont Keeper. The ref blew the whistle for Half time and
we went in with a 2 goal advantage.
The teams came out for the second half and AFC hadn't made any changes. Bedfont were straight on the attack and after 4 minutes of the second half they pulled a goal back from a corner. As had happened in a number of games recently as soon as the opposition scored we went up the other end of the pitch and got the goal margin back and once again this was the case when Kevin Cooper got his second of the game, we were now 3-1 up.
As the crowd was announced as 1,107 Kevin Cooper thought he had a
third consecutive hat-trick in league games but it was ruled out for
offside although it was a quality finish with a power shot fired into
the corner from a tight angle. With about 30 minutes left Ally Russell
who had a good game was replaced by Joe Sheerin and it was only a
couple more minutes when another goal was added to the AFC "goals
for" Column. This time although Kevin Cooper tried to claim it, it
was clear that it was an own goal and Coopers half hearted claim faded
away. I still think he could be on for a fine for claiming a goal
he didn't score.
With us now 4-1 up it was the time to introduce Paul Scott as you
may have read on the official site he played one game for Chipstead
this season, the game in question was Chipstead Vs Raynes Park Vale
during this game he Scored 2 goals, Setup 2 goals and won a penalty
and for the record Chipstead won 7-4 after being 4-3 down at half
time. Our 5th goal came about when Ryan Gray picked up the ball in the centre of the pitch on the edge of the goal he fired in a shot and it bounced on the hard surface and over the keeper and into the back of the net. The ball had reached Ryan when Paul Scott had got the ball out wide on the left and cut the ball back to Ryan.
The 6th and final goal came about via Joe Sheerin when he scored from
close range. Bedfont were another team who had looked like they would
create problems for us after having a strong start to the season but
we had once again showed how strong we are.

27/09/2003 Though For The Day - Today is going to be a difficult day for a lot of people and a team is bound to get a lot of publicity and hurtful things will be said about the past. When looking through the web this morning I cam across the text below from Steve Elson who has been a fan of Wimbledon Football since version one of Non League days, so if you are feeling down today read the following and remember it's us that has won.
I'm just making a cup of tea in my Dons Trust mug. The Dons Trust that we formed and built. Then I will put on my AFC Wimbledon shirt, the shirt that my mate designed based on an original Wimbledon FC shirt that I owned in 1976, and go to Bedfont. There I will see the club that we have resurrected, financed and supported, play football and hopefully win. I absolutely refuse to let events that are happening 70 miles today in a tin-pot overspill town spoil my day. Have a good day everyone and remember - we won and the events underneath the fligh-path this afternoon are the living proof of that.Steve Elson - Sat Sep 27 08:43:49 2003Lets all turn up at Bedfont and give our boys the backing they deserve.

Travel Details For Saturday - On Saturday we make the trip
to the end of Heathrow airport and Bedfont Football club. Last year
we played them on a midweek night and I must say I was impressed with
the ground. There is a nice size bar and the ground can take a fair
size crowd.
In terms of getting there instead of going all the way into London
on the tube and then out again I got a train to Feltham and then a
bus to Hatton Cross tube the ground is 5 minutes walk from there.
For anyone staying for a drink after the game you could well be in
for the the view of one of the final Concorde's landing. It is due
to land between 17:30 and 18:00 and as the plane is being taken out
of service on 24 October it may not be seen much more. Concorde regularly
fly's over Kingsmeadow and also treated us to a sight at our first
game against Sutton. |

24/09/2003
45 Minutes With Six Appeal - AFC Wimbledon tonight extended
there lead at the top of the Combined counties Table to 4 points as
we came away with a 60 win against Chessington & Hook. We had a similar
line up to Sunday except Andy Sullivan replaced Jamie Angel with Gibson
back at right back and Sullivan on the wing.
We made plenty of attacking chances in the first half but were unable to break the deadlock with the best chances falling to Kevin Cooper but the Chessington & Hook keeper making some good saves. In the closing minutes of the first half Kevin Cooper done a brilliant turn on the edge of the box that smacked against the post and then hit the keeper on the back 9 times out of 10 the ball would end up in the back of the net but this time it stayed out and was cleared.
As the teams left the pitch at half time it was a case of most of
the crowd thinking how did the score remain at 0-0 and hoping that
our luck would change in the second half. The half time Stats showed
that Chessington & Hook hadn't had a single shot on target in the
first half.
It wasn't long into the second half when the deadlock was broken Andy Sullivan broke down the right hand side and fired in a brilliant cross across the 6 yard box and there was Ryan Gray to blast it over the line. Shortly after this we spotted the first outfield player in gloves of the season as Chessington & Hook number 12 Sam Wright had come on at half time.
Now that the AFC players had found the route to goal they were more
keen to have efforts and 7 minutes later Kevin Cooper dispatched a
brilliant shot from the edge of the box that flew into the top corner.
As the crowd began to relax at the thought of another 3 points being
on the board we were soon celebrating another goal, Chessington &
Hooks goalkeeper was once again called into action bust although he
pulled off 2 brilliant saves he could keep out Ally Russell's close
range effort.
Talk in the press box then began about the reverse of a famous game at Selhurst against Watford when goals were scored in the order of player numbers 7,8,9,10 & 11 so far tonight we had goals scored in the order of 11, 10 & 9. Did this mean that Gavin Bolger would be next on the scoresheet? Well it only took a couple of minutes to find out and it wasn't to be the case as Danny Oakins scored his first and our 4th of the game.
The ref who was not having the best of games seemed to have lost some
control of the game and a classic example was when he allowed a series
of bad fouls on AFC Players and then booked Ryan Gray for dissent.
With us 4-0 up and the crowd of 2,494 more than happy we had a chance
of a 5th when Kevin Cooper had a shot it came to Ally Russell but
from what seemed to be right under the bar he seemed to clear it away
from the goal.
The scoring wasn't over and Kevin Cooper got his 2nd of the night
when he had another blaster that flew into the net. 6 minutes later
we had the 6th goal of the night and this time it was a Kevin Cooper
header for his hat-trick and his 15th goal in 8 matches. When you
think this game was 0-0 at half time it was an incredible turn around.
So a 6-0 victory against a good Chessington & Hook side who were 6th in the table and will give a number of teams problems this season. Some people said that the Chessington Keeper is the best in the league and it's fair to say he made some brilliant saves tonight. The Man Of The Match Vote is now open please click below to vote. |

21/09/2003
Into First Round Proper Of FA Vase - This afternoon AFC Wimbledon
beat Pagham thanks to a goal from Matt Everard. It was a difficult
game on a hard and dry pitch and a couple of changes saw Matt Everard
come in to center of defence with Jamie Angel at Right back Simon
Bassey at Left Back and Steve Gibson on the Right Wing, With Joe Sheerin
out injured it was Cooper and Russell upfront.
Pagham started the stronger but once AFC Wimbledon got the ball under
control we looked like we would be the side to cause the problems.
Matt Everard scored from a header from a corner when it looked like
Pagham would clear it. The game was tight but Pagham managed to get
the ball in the net a few times but they were canceled out for offside.
The pitch continued to give us problems and chances were few and far
between. In the second half there was a scuffle on the floor and although
the ref gave us the free kick at first he sent Simon Bassey off and
then gave Pagham the free kick. Five minutes later Pagham had there
best chance to score but Danny Oakins chased back and put in a brilliant
tackle in the box to clear the ball. With AFC down to 10 men and Ryan
Luffman on for Kevin Cooper it was going to make for an interesting
last 15 minutes and possible extra time but we managed to hold out
and are now in the draw that takes place at 11am Monday for the first
round proper of the FA Vase.

19/09/2003 From North Shore Of New Zealand To The West Bank Of The Thames - As I have said before never let a fact get in the way of a good headline, I am sure that technically there isint a "West Bank Of The Thames". Tony Readings who was captain against Sandhurst and played 18 games for AFC Wimbledon has returned from playing in New Zealand and has elected to play for AFC Wimbledon. When Tony left it was very sudden so people didn't get a chance to say thanks but on Saturday as he pulls on the Yellow and Blue for the reserves I am sure that a lot of people will be pleased to see him back. |

19/09/2003
Team News For The Weekend - The Official site has details of
squads for both Saturday's Reserve game and also Sunday's trip to
Pagham in the FA Vase. When you look at the squads one player appears
in both lists, this is correct and is not an error I would imagine
that he will play 1/2 the game for the reserves and then be on the
bench on Sunday. The full squad details can be seen by clicking here.

No Ban For Matt - On Thursday evening Matt Everard had to face
the London FA over his "Sending Off" in the home game to Walton Casuals.
The player who was sent off with him and Walton Casuals captain Mark
Osikoya appeared at the hearing in Matt's defence in a surprise move
although the linesman appears to have stood by his decision the London
FA said there was no case to prove and the Red Card has been removed.
When Mark appeared at his hearing the other Week Matt spoke up for
him and his sending off was removed as well. |
|
18/09/2003 Ilford Match Review - Wednesday night saw us go out of the London Senior Cup when we lost 6-2 at Ilford. The main selection of players for the game were young reserve players and therefore playing a team that were doing well like Ilford (2nd in the Essex Senior League) was always going to be difficult. On arrival at the ground AFC players were wearing Yellow and the floodlights gave a nice yellow glow as well which by the looks of it made the pitch look nicer than it was. In the early exchanges it was clear that AFC Players were having difficulty with the pitch as the bounce was high and uneven. After going behind to an Ilford goal Ally Russell leveled the score with a nice finish. Just after the half hour mark Ilford were back in front after the defence was caught out with a long ball. With 40 minutes gone Danny Oakins was sent off for what some people said was a late challenge this put extra pressure on the defence that saw Joe Hill, Matt Hodge and Lewis Taylor making debuts for the '1st team'.
In the second half Ilford ran away with the game and after we pulled
the score back to 4-2 from a goal by Wade, Ilford scored a few minutes
after the kick off. Before the end of the game the traveling AFC Fans
were able to watch a supporters 100 meter race when 6 fans jumped
the barrier and ran down the home straight of the running track. Son
Sunday will see us take on Pagham and I am sure we will be back to
seeing the normal starting line up. |

Last Nights Results - Seems to be a little bit of confusion
over last nights results the only confirmed score is Chipstead 7 Raynes
Park Vale 4 with the score at Half Time being 3-4, by all accounts
this was a classic game of football. With regards to the Southall
Wallingford game we had the score reported as 2-1 to Southall but
the Wallingford webmaster who was at the game said it was 1-1 as one
of the goals was disallowed. Hartley Wintney Vs North Greenford was
reported as 1-1 but it may have finished 4-2. At the moment I am unable
to check all the scores from the normal confirmed source but once
I have the details I will confirm them and then make any more changes
to the table that are needed. |

15/09/2003 Train Info For Wednesday Night - On Wednesday night we play Ilford in the London Senior Cup the game is at the same ground as when we played Frenford Senior last season (The one with the big bar that overlooks the pitch and most of us stood up there to watch). Checking the train line it suggest that regular trains run from Stratford station to Seven Kings (the nearest station) I will put up a map tomorrow night. |

Advance Train Times For Pagham - With the game being moved
to Sunday this also mucks up the available trains that you can get
for the trip down to the seaside. The best route from Wimbledon I
have found seems to be the 10:04 from Wimbledon going to Clapham Junction
and then get the 10:23 to Ford and then the 12:01 to Bognor this arrives
at 12:37. As the ground is 3 miles away from Bognor Station it may
be worth getting n a cab to the ground. |

114/09/2003 Another Hat-Trick Another Three Points - After the good win in Midweek we saw the return of Ray Merry in goal as Matt Martin had picked up a slight knock and therefore was rested while Joe Sheerin returned after his injury that he suffered. In the first half AFC were attacking the West Bank and Farnham Town kicked off.
It wasn't long before the Dobbinson and Gray partnership were already
in action but Ryan Gray was fouled and we were awarded a free kick
wide on the touchline. A couple of minutes later we had a free kick
but this time it was a lot closer and on the edge of the box, Danny
Oakins stepped forward to take it and rather than having an effort
at goal he played it into the box but it was two close to the keeper
and he collected it.
AFC had another chance to take the lead when Kevin Cooper turned in
the box and tried to bring the ball down but it was cleared by the
defender. The best chance of the early part of the game came when
Andy Sullivan was presented with a lovely headed chance but it was
just wide of the goal, the question on peoples minds was would of
Kevin Cooper had dispatched it with his head if he had been in Sullivans
position?.
We were well on top and next up it was Joe Sheerins chance to get involved and he had an over the shoulder shot at goal but this was saved by the keeper. We were really in the position to get goals but it was just getting the breakthrough Sullivan crossed the ball into the box and Ryan Gray managed to flick the ball onto Joe Sheerin but his shot was tipped over for a corner. The goal that we had been looking for came about on 14 minutes when Darren Dobbinson broke down the wing and then got into the box past the defender he cut the ball back across goal to Kevin Cooper who was about 6 yards out and he side footed the ball into the back of the net. This was Kevin's 10th goal of the season and 7th in the league.
We continued to push forward and next up for an effort on goal was
Danny Oakins who headed the ball over from a corner. Almost immediately
Gavin Bolger had a header that looped over the keeper but just over
the bar as well.
From the next corner Kevin Cooper was just about to shoot but a defender
blocked it ad the ball came to Danny Oakins who dispatched a shot
but this was well saved. Joe Sheerin got a kick on the leg and required
treatment but he was OK to continue. Straight away Joe was back in
the action and put us 2-0 up when Kevin Cooper played the ball to
Joe on the edge of the box and Joe fired a shot in it appeared to
deflect off a defender and ended up in the back of the net. This goal
was Joe's 9th of the season and equal to the number of goals he scored
for us in the whole of last season.
With us 2-0 up Steve Gibson decided he wanted to be involved in the
action and he came bursting through the middle of the pitch and shot
at goal but the keeper saved well and put the ball out for a corner.
Following Gibo's shot Joe's dead Leg forced him to be substituted
and he was replaced by Leon White. Leon was straight into the action
and forced the keeper into a great save.
As the game went into the closing minutes of the first half Farnham pulled a goal back to make the score 2-1 to AFC Wimbledon. We almost made it 3-1 almost from the kick off as Kevin Cooper had a shot saved but then the keeper fumbled it and no AFC players were on show to finish it off. The ref blew the whistle for half time and we went in 2-1 up but well on top.The second half started really slowly for AFC Wimbledon and Darren Dobbinson was called in to stop Farnham pulling the score back level. A ball down the middle of the pitch caught out the defence and Ray Merry came out of his area but to clear but the attacker managed to put the ball past Ray and it was heading for the back of the net, but Darren Dobbinson managed to block the ball just before the line and managed to clear it.
About 10 minutes into the second half Leon White played the ball to
Kevin Cooper who was on the floor but he managed to get a boot to
it but it was saved. Andy Sullivan was supplying the crosses a lot
today and first Danny Oakins missed a chance when he put an effort
wide and then Leon had an effort saved from a Sullivan cross.
As a crowd of 2,738 was announced Gavin Bolger had a shot that had the keeper beaten but crashed against the crossbar and came out Leon tried to head it but the keeper punched it clear. Leon had another headed chance from a corner but this went wide of the goal.Gavin Bolger was replaced by Noel Frankum. With 15 minutes left and it looking like it would be a tight finish we went 3-1 up when a Danny Oakins effort was touched in either by a defender or Kevin Cooper, Cooper came away claiming it and was his second of the game. With us home and dry now the ref was called into action when the Farnham Number Two made a bad challenge through the back of Ryan Gray and a bit of a scuffle started involving most of the players. The ref decided to send off the Farnham Number two but awarded Farnham a throw on.
With Cooper now on for a hat-trick Andy Sullivan played a wonderful
ball to him but Kevin's weak shot was saved by the Keeper. Our final
sub was for Simon Bassey to come on for Ryan Gray.
AFC Were awarded a freekick on the edge of the box and it was clear
that only one player was going to take this up stepped Kevin Cooper
and he fired the ball into the back of the net for his hat-trick and
to put AFC Wimbledon 4-1 up.
The Ref blew the whistle for full time and AFC's good run continued.
One of the Unused substitutes today was a 17 Year Old Lewis Taylor
who before this season had be in the Fulham Youth Set-up everyone
I have spoke to say that Lewis is a great talent and I am sure that
we will be seeing a fair amount of Lewis this season.

Frimley Green Match Report - After the brilliant result on
Saturday in the FA Vase we returned to league action with the visit
of Frimley Green. Joe Sheerin was replaced by Leon White with Joe
missing the game altogether, Matt Everard was still out and Lee Sidwell
was once again missing after he was told to rest for last nights game.
With Joe and Matty missing from the line up Danny Oakins stepped into
the captains role.
With a midweek game meaning a reduced attendance it looked like a
crowd of around 2,000 were present to watch the game, it was later
announced as 2,401. Danny Oakins won the toss and therefore elected
to defend the west bank in the first half and Frimley Green kicked
the game off.
The opening minutes of the game although saw us putting pressure on
Frimley we could convert any chances. After 15 minutes it looked like
we were going to score when Ryan Gray picked up a brilliant crossfield
ball and hit it first time from the edge of the box but it crashed
against the post. After 40 minutes we were awarded a penalty when
Danny Oakins was fouled in the box. Kevin Cooper took a fast bowlers
run up and hit the ball straight at the keeper who saved it. With
time running out we won a corner the ball was played in and Danny
Oakins managed to get a head to the ball and it looped over the keeper
and into the back of the net. We were 1-0 up at half time.
In the second half we were attacking the west bank. After 15 minutes we had another chance to extend the lead after Leon broke into the box and his first shot was blocked and then the follow up shot was saved by the keeper. With 20 minutes of the second half was played we extended the lead with a curling effort past the keeper.
Ten minutes later Wade Falana picked up a booking when the keeper
pushed him over. Wade was a bit wound up by this and almost scored
a couple of minutes later had a brilliant shot that appeared to be
deflected for a corner but a goal-kick was given.
Matt Martin was called into a rare moment of action when he saved
well and released the ball up the pitch and Darren Dobbinson went
on a run he crossed the ball into the box this was met by the head
of a defender and went into the back of the net. We were 3-0 up and
once again the points were safe. As the game entered injury time Kevin
Cooper scored his second of the match and put himself ahead in his
personal battle with Joe Sheerin for AFC top scorer. So another convincing
victory and next up is Farnham Town.

10/09/2003 Time For A Moan - Right I know I try and be positive all the time but after last night I think it's time to have a moan. This wont affect the majority of people who read this site but if you see it happening near you and you do nothing it could be said that you should of done something.
Last night during the second half something was thrown at the Frimley
Green goalkeeper. It was reported that it was a coin and apparently
came about following the reaction of the keeper following our first
goal. At half time someone said that the atmosphere between the AFC
fans and the keeper was fun but the person added "Wait until they
turn on him". At the start of the second half some songs were sung
at the keeper and they got more abusive as the game went on before
after we scored the second he got hit by the coin. This will be reported
to the league and we could well end up being fined, points deducted,
sections of or the whole ground closed and even blocked attempt for
promotion.
A number of people said "it's just banter" well tonight I looked up the word in the compact Oxford Dictionary and it says as follows: -banter
noun the good-humoured exchange of teasing remarks.
Verb engage in banter
The "songs" that were being sung at the keeper were not good humoured we have a number of children at games and you should have respect for them if no one else. Some people say they are footballers who are used to abuse, this is not true, most of the opposition players have never played infront of such a large crowd. These are people who are good enough to play football at level 8 of national leagues, and most other players have to pay fees to play for there team. Yes the keeper was wrong to react to the fans but how would of you reacted if you had received the abuse that he had got?
Have a think about this and if you see anything that detracts against
the good work that the vast majority of AFC fans are trying to achieve.
So remember if you let things go and we end up being punished don't
say you weren't warned. Now lets get back to the football.

08/09/2003 Bed Time Reading - As the long winter nights begin to draw in you may wish to get some winter evening reading in that has a football and AFC related theme. So below are 3 books that should be on any AFC Dons fans bookshelf.
First up is The Ripple Effect By Dominic Holland - In the thanks page
at the front of the book it states "For My Mum and Dad" and Then "To
all the AFC Wimbledons out there" Dominic claims that this book is
not about AFC Wimbledon but on reading it I am sure that you will
be able to identify with some of the people in the book in the history
of both Wimbledon FC and AFC Wimbledon. The book is about a 3rd division
northern football club on the brink of relegation and how the home
of Middleton Edwardians Football Club are having the ground sold off
for housing. The main person Bill Baxter works at a bakers and what
happens when one day he decided not to put jam into some doughnuts.
The story then runs to the end of season with Middleton and the fight
by the fans to keep the ground"
If you haven't purchased The Ripple Effect you can from Amazon.co.uk
by clicking on the following link will allow you to buy a copy and
any sales made via this link I will donate the commission from each
sale to The Stadium Fund. Click
here to buy The Ripple Effect
So did last year past you by in a haze do you want to relive the moments of Sandhurst, Southall and victory over AFC Wallingford? Well now you can in the brilliant "A Unique Solution - The First Year Of AFC Wimbledon" by our very own Paul Jeater (or Essex Womble as he is know) Paul is selling the book for £7.95 and from this all profits go to the stadium fund. You can find Paul on match days either walking round the ground or in the back bar.
The third book is actually the third in a series and is called "Clubs
In Crisis - 'The Capital Crimes'" and tells the story of AFC Wimbledon
/ Wimbledon FC as well as Enfield / Enfield Town and Barnet, once
again this book is raising money for the ground fund and £2 from each
sale will go to the ground fund. The book is available from the WISA
stall in the back bar. |

07/09/2003
A Magnificent Seven In The Search For Cup Glory - AFC Wimbledon
started on the long road to possible Cup Glory with a trip to fellow
Combined Counties League Side Westfield. Westfield had started the
season well but had suffered a couple of bad results in the last few
weeks, the worst was on Tuesday night when they lost 7-0 at home to
Chessington & Hook. With a large crowd expected they had once again
taken the option of switching the game 'over the road' to Woking's
ground. Prior to the match the bar at Westfield was opened up and
a number of AFC fans took advantage of this although a mad dash was
caused as the heavens opened and all but two people took shelter on
the patio by the bar.
The AFC Wimbledon team saw the return of Danny Oakins who came in for the injured Matt Everard, although Matt was warming up so he could well be back in the squad for Tuesday nights home game. Lee Sidwell was also on the bench with Andy Sullivan starting on the right. The Westfield manager had commented that they play well in the first half (they were only 1-0 down on Tuesday at half time) so this could turn into a tight game. The majority of the AFC Fans took up places in the huge stand behind the goal and it looked like Joe Sheerin may have won his first coin toss of the season as he elected to attack that end. A number of fans who had not been in the big stand also came round and it was almost full by the time AFC kicked off. In the opening few minutes it was tight but then all of a sudden the game sprung into life with some quick goals. First up was Seb Favata who received the ball on the edge of the box right slap bang in the centre of the pitch and after his first effort hit a defender dispatched his second shot past the keeper the 1,000 plus people in the stand went crazy and it was only 5 minutes gone.
As everyone settled back down and the buzz following Seb's goal going
round the ground we were soon to have another goal to celebrate as
Kevin Cooper put us 2-0 up with just 7 minutes played with 83 minutes
left it was now looking as if we were going to have a good afternoon.
Less than 2 minutes later we were back on our feet as Kevin Cooper
cut in from a tight angle on the right of the pitch Joe Sheerin was
unmarked in the centre of the box and it looked like Kevin would cut
it back to Joe for a simple tap in but Kevin went for glory and from
a really tight angle he fired the ball into the back of the net. A
number of Westfield players fell to the floor as they could yet again
see another hammering as they were 3-0 down inside 10 minutes, I wonder
if the managers final words in the dressing room to them had been
"keep it tight in the first half lads as we sometimes struggle in
the second".
With 11 minutes played Matt Martin was finally called into action
but saved the ball well. Almost immediately AFC Were back on the attack
and Joe Sheerin fired in a shot but this was over the bar. From our
next attack we should of been awarded a corner but the ref decided
that it had come off an AFC player and a goal kick was awarded.
Westfield had a golden opportunity to pull a goal back on 20 minutes
when a mix up in the defence gave an attacker a free header at an
open goal but he managed to head it against the cross bar and then
it was cleared. We went straight up the pitch and Gavin fired in a
shot but this was well saved. With 20 minutes played a lovely bit
of football was unfolding infront of us Steve Gibson who had run down
the right wing fired in a cross and Joe Sheerin flicked the ball on
with his leg into the path of Kevin Cooper but Kevin's shot flew over
the bar.
Kevin also had the next effort on goal but this was tipped over for
an AFC Corner. Westfield were soon on the attack and Darren Dobbinson
did well to block the ball and it go out for a corner to Westfield.
The corner was taken and a headed effort went wide for a goal kick.
As Matt Martin took the goal kick he appeared to slip as it was a
very poor kick and went straight to a Westfield attacker he was free
and ran into the box and dispatched the ball past Matt Martin to make
the score 3-1. Gavin Bolger seemed to be particularly annoyed about
this and kicked the ball away from the centre circle in disgust, but
straight away AFC were on the attack and Kevin Cooper scored his 3rd
goal of the afternoon and AFC's 4th of the match. Westfield were really
demoralised now and Joe Sheerin was determined to get involved in
the action and less than 2 minutes later he had scored our 5th of
the afternoon.
With 10 minutes left of the 1st half there was still plenty of drama
to come first up Seb wanted to add to his goal tally and fired in
a shot that was saved, then Ryan gray ran on to a through ball and
managed to fire it past the keeper but the linesman decided to raise
his flag for an offside decision, from where I was it looked like
it may have been Joe that was offside but the goal was ruled out.
Then in the final minute of the half a Westfield defender climbed
all over Joe and the ref awarded a penalty as we were about to take
it the linesman who had just ruled out Ryan's effort decided that
he was going to call offside against us and so the ref now gave a
free kick to Westfield. The half time whistle was blown and the score
was Westfield 1 AFC Wimbledon 5
With the prospect of more goals in store the majority of AFC fans
in the main stand moved round to the covered terrace behind the goal
we were attacking. The second half started as the first half had finished
with AFC on the attack but 5 minutes into the half Danny Oakins tackled
an attacker and the ref blew the whistle for a foul he pointed to
the spot for a penalty and a number of AFC players went to complain
because you could see the mark that had been made and it was just
outside the box. The ref then made it worse by sending Danny off presumably
for being the last defender but a number of people said that there
was a covering defender. Was this a case of the ref trying to even
the game out a bit? Recently Danny has been the subject of a discussion
over disciplinary problems with regards to bookings and sending off
but the 1,300 AFC fans that were there (out of a crowd of 1,344) applauded
Danny off the park to show what they thought of the ref's decision
Danny clapped the fans back which was nice to see. Westfield scored
the penalty and the score was Westfield 2 AFC Wimbledon 5
Following Danny Oakins dismissal Kevin Cooper was substituted for
Leon White who dropped into defence. 7 minutes after the sending off
Gavin came running into the box with the wall on the right hand side
and smacked the ball goal-bound but it smacked against the bar and
went for a goal-kick. With 30 minutes left in the game we equaled
our highest ever score of 6-2 when Joe Sheerin got his second of the
game with a lovely curling shot past the keeper. In the past there
has been a fear tat once we get in a winning position we took our
foot off the gas a bit but this was not the case today. With the 4
goal lead restored Simon Bassey came on for the once again excellent
Seb Favata.
A brilliant ball from Andy Sullivan was played across the box to the unmarked Ryan Gray but he must have just taken his eye off the ball as his first touch let him down and the ball went out for a goal kick. Matt Martin at the other end of the pitch was called into action and claimed the ball well. Another player who had been prompting discussion over the last few weeks had been Andy Sullivan and with him playing well on the right of the pitch he was also planning to get on the score sheet and he scored a Magnificent goal for our seventh as he ran into the box and put the ball past the keeper. You could see the delight on his face as he celebrated the goal. The goal was to be Andy Sullivans final contribution of the game as he was replaced by Noel Frankum and he got a brilliant reception as he left the pitch. With 10 minutes left the action still wasn't over and Noel Frankum was straight into the action, first up he had a shot saved and then following great play between Joe Sheerin and Gavin Bolger Noel curled one just wide of the post. Joe was still on for a hat-trick and after getting free in the box he fired a shot but it smacked against the post. Next up was Gavin chance for another opportunity to get on the score sheet but his brilliant run ended with his shot being well saved. With just a few minutes left Darren Dobinson had a shot but this went over the bar. Two players who worked really well today were Darren Dobbinson and Ryan Gray the understanding they have built up seems to be working really well and they seem to take it in turns for one to get forward and one to stay back.
The ref blew the final whistle and we had won 7-2 in our first run
out in the FA Vase. This was extremely one sided game and to think
that we played 40 minutes with 10 men shows how dominating we were.
We now have two league games before we play away at Pagham over the
weekend of the 20th September lets hope the run continues.
The Man of The Match poll is now open so please click below to vote,
don't forget the option of The Whole team is included.

Travel For Westfield - This Saturday we start our quest for
glory in the first qualifying round of the FA Vase. This will be the
first national competition we are in and although the early rounds
are regional we could end up with some fun trips if we do well. With
us being drawn against Westfield they have taken the option of playing
the game "over the road" at Woking so anyone that went last year will
remember the brilliant stand that they have at the ground.
In terms of getting there by train the journey takes about half an
hour and you either need to change at Surbiton or you can get a direct
train from Wimbledon, some examples of direct trains are 12:22 and
12:50. Once you come out of the station the side the train comes in
I believe walk straight down the road in front of you this leads you
to the park, and then the leisure centre. If you have time and it's
open pop in to the bar at Westfield and then pop over the road to
Woking's ground. The big stand is at the far end of the pitch from
where the turnstiles are. |

Draw For Reserves After Multiple Sending Off's - The reserves
had a 1-1 draw tonight against Chertsey Town. Ben Chesters was sent
off after a punch up early in the second half and then Leon White
put AFC one up. Chertsey pulled it back to 1-1 with 16 minutes left
but the drama was still to follow as both sides were reduced to 9
men when Chertsey had 2 players sent off and Noel Frankum was red
carded for us. |
|
03/09/2003 Reserves In Action Tonight - The reserves are in action tonight at home (played at Hampton and Richmond) against Chertsey Town. I wont be at the game tonight but I will have the score up once the game has finished. |

Cheers Couchy - Earlier tonight on the weird
and wonderful world.com guestbook Daniel Couch posted the following message: -
Hello wombles, this is probably the hardest message that I will
have had to write for this message board, and it's to say that I have
decided to leave AFC Wimbledon..... this wasn't an easy decision to
make, and took a lot of deep thought over the last few weeks. It has
became obvious to me that with such a strong first team squad and
with players coming and going all the time that I wasn't going to
get first team football which is what everyone wants to play, and
even in the reserves it was clear that I wasn't going to play regularly,
and I feel that I need to play regular football to do myself, and a
team justice. I want to say what a pleasure it has been to play for
AFC Wimbledon, and to wear that badge with pride, the fans are second
to none and you should all very proud of what you have achieved in
such a short space of time... even now when I think of that first
game against Sutton my hair stands on end... I want to wish you all
the best for the future, and a special thank you to marc, owen, porky, kerry, tin
tin,Big N, and gemma who have sponsored my kit.. I hope to see you
at the fans stadium in future, this time just as a fan... All the
best Couchy
Daniel couch ( aka AFC number two)
at homespace - Tue Sep 2 18:42:19 2003
Can I just say a big thanks to Couchy for everything he has done over the past 14 months or so since he turned up at the trials. I am sure he will do well in the future and we may even see him in years to come back in an AFC Shirt. |
