Reading Town Preview - Tomorrow we play one of the teams that
come the end of the season look like they will be one of the major
clubs in the league. Reading Town so far have only played 9 games
and have won 6 drawn 2 and lost 1 game on the goals front they have
scored 18 goals and conceded 8 goals so it looks like it could be
a hard game and may end up being a close game.
No team news has been announced as of yet but based on comments that
have been made since Wednesday night we are without Danny Oakins,
Simon Bassey and Noel Frankum who are all suspended while injuries
could see us without Steve Gibson and Gavin Bolger who both look like
they will be out with rib injuries Paul Scott apparently has an ankle
injury and Joe Sheerin missed Wednesday nights game.

Travel To Reading Town On Saturday - Saturday sees the trip
to Reading Town and although I wont be at the game it looks like it
could be a good day out on the train. There are two routes that you
can take either Train from London Paddington to Tilehurst or Clapham
Junction to Tilehurst. Having checked a couple of train sites the
cost from Wimbledon on both routes is under £15 for an adult with
the Clapham route a return ticket being £10.10 and the Paddington
price being £13.40.
From Paddington trains depart to Reading at 12 and 42 minutes past
the hour and then the connecting trains to Tilehurst are at 25 and
55 and take a further 4 minutes. If you would rather go from Clapham
Junction the train departs at 29 and 59 minutes past the hour and
the journey takes about 1 hour 20 minutes to Reading you then connect
on to the tilehurst service. I haven't been able to find an online
map that shows the ground but the railway runs along side the ground
so it wont be that far to walk. |

Not Unlucky 13 For AFC - Tonight AFC Wimbledon won in the league
for the 13th time this season. I wasn't at the game but listening
to the brilliant service that is Radio Wdon it was clear that we were
not really under any trouble and two goals goals in the first 25 minutes
from Kevin Cooper and Lee Sidwell set up the win. Andy Sullivan came
on late in the game and managed to score before a comical goal in
the last minute saw Gavin Bolger score to give us a 4-0 Victory.

How Others See Us - When I supported a team in the Football
League I always looked forward to playing Watford the main reason
is that there fans have a brilliant fanzine/Website called Blind
Stupid and Desperate and each season they ask fans of other teams
to fill in the pre-season poll yes this has the standard questions
who will finish top three, bottom three, who are your rivals etc.
but then they throw in a couple of extra questions for example this
years included: -
Who was your favourite member of the A-Team?
If you're happy and you know it clap your hands ?Listing different ways of spelling ACCOMMODATION and asking which one is right and then saying what % got it right and also how many admitted to cheating and also who cheated but still got it wrong.
Well last year they came down on Boxing Day and saw a pitch under
water as the game against Raynes Park Vale was called off but on
Saturday they missed Watford winning 3-1 to watch AFC Wimbledon
at Whytleafe and they have done 2 match reports. These can be read,
laughed at and enjoyed by clicking here. I first met these guys back in premiership days when I went on the Saturday night football fans chat show on BBC Choice. They had lost to Man United and one of them turned round on Air and said We lost we are going down but we will always be "Watford Til I Die not Man United Til 10 to 5 every other Saturday". So to Ian and Pete cheers guys pleased you enjoyed it and next time you are at Kingsmeadow hope to buy you a beer.

|
27/10/2003 Reading On Saturday - On Saturday we make the trip to Reading but not to the Madejski Stadium but Scours Lane. Last season this was the game where we could no longer win the league but we still had a wicked day. I will be putting up more information on the game later in the week but on checking the train prices if you go via Clapham Junction to Tilehurst avoiding Paddington the cheap day fair is just over £10 for adults. |

26/10/2003 Reserve Watch - On Saturday the Reserves won 3-1 against Epsom and Ewell and are now 12th in the Suburban Southern League. The team n 3rd place is only 6 points ahead of us and a few teams have played more games that we have at present.
The third round of the cup has been drawn and we will be at home to
the winners of the Tooting & Mitcham Vs Waltham Forest Game. The Suburban
league Website lists it as Windsor & Eton or Tooting & Mitcham or
Waltham Forest but Tooting won 2-0 yesterday against Windsor so they
are now in the second round. No date is known for this match yet.

25/10/2003
Back To The Top - So the top two in the current table met on
the neutral pitch of Whytleafe and to be honest the match was very
one sided. Once again the large traveling support over 1,900 meant
that the game had to be delayed for 15 minutes as vantage points were
taken up round the ground. A number of journalists were present including
one from the Sunday people who was looking for a feature on Michael
Harvey, as he made his well publicised debut for AFC Wimbledon.
The squad for Chipstead had a number of old AFC players in it including Mark Nicholas and Andrew Petty. While the AFC starting line up included Lee Carroll in goal and Michael Harvey at left back. Other changes in the team saw Simon Bassey in the right back position and Lee Sidwell on right wing. Right from the kick off the Dons were on the attack and Kevin Cooper soon had the first chance and fired a shot against the post. With the packed stand behind the goal having seating at the front with lots of people behind them standing in any position possible the noise level was really high.
With just over 5 minutes gone it was showing that we might have to
be on our guard as Chipstead had an attack and shot wide of goal.
Kevin Cooper had another chance but once again this was wide of the
goal. With 16 minutes played Ryan Gray scored a spectacular goal when
he was out on the wing and had an effort that flew past the keeper
and into the back of the net.
We continued to attack from the corner and Matt Everard headed over
the bar. As the 30 minutes mark came round we had a corner out on
the left hand side of the pitch and as Oakins was trying to get position
in the box he was pushed over he got up again and was this time pushed
in the face as the ball went out of the area the ref pointed to the
penalty spot and Kevin Cooper stepped up an fired the ball to his
right and into the back of the net to put us 2-0 up. No Chipstead
players were booked but it was clear they were not happy about this.
5 minutes later Seb Favarta was trying to win the ball and as he was
trying to clear it from the Chipstead player a few Chipstead players
came in and at first kicked him and then a big fight erupted it was
clear that a Chipstead player had Seb by the throat but in the end
the ref booked both Seb and the Chipstead player/manager Stuart Massey.
The ref called an end to the half and it was a well deserved lead
we took into the break. Apparently the Chipstead manager was none
to happy at half time and told his players as much.
Right from the start Matt Everard had another header but this was
blocked on the line. With us 2-0 up it was clear that Harvey wanted
to get in on the action and he crossed the ball in but it was cleared.
A couple of minutes later Simon Bassey was booked. After his previous
effort Harvey was back in action on the edge of the box and he had
a shot across the keeper and it hit the inside of the post it looked
like it was going in but it went along the line and then came out
Michael looked in shock and the crowd was well disappointed.
The ref was called back into action and this time he would dismiss
two players it wasn't clear what happened but after checking with
a few people it appears that Simon Bassey and the Chipstead player
were blocking each other and the Chipstead player hit out at Bassey,
the linesman indicate the offense and Bassey got his second booking
and therefore left the pitch while the Chipstead player was given
a straight red card.
Terry Eames made a change and replaced Kevin Cooper and Lee Sidwell with Paul Scott and Steve Gibson. Danny Oakins had a shot on goal after a really good run and then a second chance where he played it along the goal line but it was put out for a corner. From the corner the ball was played into the box and Paul Scott was there to volley the ball into the back of the net and put us 3-0 up. As the final whistle went the chant of We are top of the league went round the ground after another very good performance. The Man Of The Match vote is now open and please click below to vote.

20/10/2003 Blue Cross Day For Wootton? - So were you one of the many AFC Fans who were waiting for the draw to be announced and were struggling to do any work, I know I was. When the draw was announced it was AFC Wimbledon Vs Wootton Blue Cross, and everyone seemed to say Who? I got my Brent Cross and me Blue Cross mixed up and thought they were based in North London but as we shortly found out they are based just south of the "Football Frenzy" capital Of The World. So what do we know of Wootton? Well they play in the Premier Division of the United Counties League, this is at the same level as the Combined Counties. They have started slowly this season with a record in the League of Played 11 Won 2 Drawn 3 Lost 6 For 6 Agi 14 and stand 5th from bottom of the league. On Saturday they played Newport Pagnell away and won 1-0 and in there previous league game won 2-1 also away at Ford Daventry who as it stands are 3 places above them. The received a bye into this round after last year they reached the quarter finals before losing to the team that went on to win the competition so although they may not look that strong it will be another tough game. The game is due to be played on 22nd November at present Kingstonian's are due to be at home on that date but it is believed that FA Rules say that the Vase game has to be played on the Saturday as soon as the date is know I will confirm it on here.Elsewhere in the draw the following games will take place for Combined Counties Teams involved.
Chertsey T/Hartley Wintney v Fakenham T
Maidstone Utd v AFC Wallingford
AFC Wimbledon v Wootton Blue Cross
Withdean 2000 v AFC Totton/Bedfont
Cray Wanderers v Chessington & Hook

And On The 93rd Minute He Created Matt Everard - If asked at
the start of the season for fans to rank the competitions that we
were in this year it is clear that most people would behind the league
like success in the FA Vase. Although it requires success over 10
games to reach the final, which is played at Upton Park this could
be our one and only chance to win the trophy as any promotion would
see us take part in the trophy next season. In the early rounds games
are played on a regional basis and the 1st round proper of the competition
saw us head off in a south easterly direction to Herne Bay.
Herne Bay were 3rd in the league but not having played anyone of note
yet it was difficult to tell how we would do against them, but most
people expected a tight game. As the coach pulled away from Kingsmeadow
it wasn't long before we were heading round the Kent coastline and
arrived at Herne Bay. We were greeted by the England Coach, no not
SGE but the one that the players use to take them places when they
forget!! and then by a local official who informed us that if you
wanted to buy tickets and head into town before the game to see him
otherwise the barriers were open and a number of bars were available.
As we got into the ground there were a few people about but when you
got to the bar it was packed as supporters were watching the England
Vs South Africa Rugby Match.
The ground was filling up nicely although report of a 3,500 - 4,000
capacity with of made it very cozy, but with 3 covered sections for
spectators with terraced standing it looked like a good view was on
the cards for all. Reports came through that 1,200 people were heading
down on trains from Victoria and so it looked like we were all out
for a good day. By the time the teams came out for the first half
all vantage points had been taken and the two ends were packed with
AFC fans.
The first AFC Chance came on 4 minutes when Joe Sheerin headed wide.
Herne Bay showed they were going to be trouble almost immediately
when they won a corner after Matt Everard cleared the ball but this
was cleared. On 10 minutes we had a free kick on the edge of the box
but the ball hit the wall. On 15 minutes Kevin Cooper had the ball
in the box with his back to goal he turned and shot but the ball was
saved.
The AFC fans round the ground were soon celebrating when we went 1-0 up after Matt Everard managed to hit the back of the net. Sorry this is a bit vague but it was at the other end and I only could see we scored when the AFC fans at the other end celebrated. We almost went 2 up when on 24 minutes a throw in was called by the Herne Bay keeper but he missed it and it just went wide before an AFC player could get a touch on it.Herne Bay leveled the score with 5 minutes of the first half left when Steve Gibson was booked for a foul and the ball was played into the box Matt Martin seemed to call for it but missed the punch and as the ball headed for the net Danny or Matt (they look similar) did an overhead kick that went to a Herne Bay player who headed in from 5 yards. I didn't see if the ball had been touched at the free kick so if it hadn't and had gone straight in would of the ref called it no goal, we will never know. The half time whistle went and the score was level at 1-1.
The 2nd half started and the majority of fans had joined us at the
end we were attacking and it was rammed in the stand. We started off
well and a nice bit of link up play between Joe Sheerin, Ryan Gray
and Darren Dobinson gave us a chance but the cross went out of play.
Just a minute later a mix up between a Herne Bay Defender heading
the ball back to his keeper and the keeper running out towards the
defender saw the ball go over the keeper and head towards the AFC
fans but before the own goal could be recorded Joe Sheerin rushed
in and headed it over the line we were 2-1 up and the terrace erupted
one of the biggest surge's I have seen at football took place in celebration
as we went mental.
Herne Bay was rocking but the game was still a longway from over and
it looked like we may need another goal. The ball was played into
the box and if Joe had connected with it he would of scored but it
was collected by the keeper.
With 15 minutes left Kevin Cooper was replaced by Paul Scott and then
the moment that we dreaded a wonderful shot from 30 yards dipped over
Matt Martin and into the back of the net to once again level the scores,
but this time at 2-2. As the game started to come to the end of the
90 minutes it looked like extra time could be needed and then maybe
a replay on Wednesday evening, but we were given a chance with a free
kick on the edge of the box and right in the middle of the goal but
Ryan's shot just went over the bar.
As the game went into injury time we had a corner the ball came into
the box and someone got a touch and sent it goalbound but it was cleared
off the line and it looked like our chance of a result in 90 minutes
was over, but we won another corner and this time I think Seb Favata
took it it seemed to go into the box and then come back to the corner
taker who played it back into the box and to where Matt Everard was
lurking on the edge of the 6 yard box he rose and headed the ball
goalbound but across the goal and it flew into the top corner at the
point furthest away from him. That was it that was the winner that
keep the vase dream alive that was one of them footballing moments
of togetherness. I don't know how much longer was played but the whistle
blew and we had won.
After the match the player celebrated and then the Herne Bay players
came over and applauded us the reception they got back was really
nice and they can rightly be proud of what they had achieved. As fans
left the ground the same bemused look seemed to be on everyone's face

Herne Bay Information - On Saturday we play Herne Bay of the
Go Travel Kent League in the FA Vase. Herne Bay's Website can be found
by clicking here
but I will detail the important information here.
Admission on Saturday is £6 for adults and £3 for concessions. The game kicks off at 3pm and it is pay on the gate. Herne Bay have started strong in the league and have a record after 6 games of won 5 drawn 1, they are 3rd in the table but todate haven't played any teams in the top 7 of the division (which has 17 teams). The Kent league has some good teams in it and it should be a tight game on Saturday.
In terms of traveling the train from Victoria takes just under an
hour and a half with direct departures at 04 and 34 with arrivals
at 27 and 59 an hour later. A map of the ground can be found here.
For people that are going by car the suggested route can be seen here.

Battling Dons Extend Winning Run - After the recent one sided
games that we have had today we had to struggle to come away with
maximum points. Things looked like they were going well, when Seb
Favarta scored after 4 minutes to give us a 1-0 lead. The rest of the
first half was very bitty with the linesman on the near (main stand)
side seemed to be not playing the offside rule when Sandhurst attacked.
And a few challenges that the officials seemed to let go. Just as
the half was coming to a close a team leveled against us in the league
for what I believe was the first time since the Raynes park Vale game
at the end of last season.
The players went off at half time and knew that they hadn't put in
a performance that they knew they were able to produce and I am sure
that Terry told them as much during the break. No changes were made
at half time and the second half got under way with AFC attacking
the west bank end of the ground. Straight from the restart Andy Sullivan
had a brilliant chance but his shot hit the side netting. From the
restart Matt Martin was called into action and made very good save
after a poor back pass was latched onto by the Sandhurst attacker.
The second half had been more attacking already and after 8 minutes
of the half AFC won their first corner of the match but the keeper
collected. 20 minutes into that half Terry Eames decided to change
things round and he replaced Gavin Bolger with Noel Frankum and Joe
Sheerin was replaced by Paul Scott. But the first attacking action
after this was for Matt Martin to save from the Sandhurst strikers.
The ball was played upfield and we won a corner the ball was played
into the centre of the box and Matt Everard was rising to head the
ball into the back of the net. The relief could be felt all the way
round the ground as we now had a 2-1 lead.
Lee Sidwell made his long awaited return and came on for Andy Sullivan
with about 15 minutes left. As the ball appeared to be running out
of play Paul Scott chased after it and reached it by the goal line
he beat two defenders and cut into the box with no shooting opportunity
available he turned away from goal and came out to near the 18 yard
line and then fired in a shot that smacked against the post but running
in was Kevin Cooper who tapped the ball in from about 3 yards and
we were 3-1 up. Although the goal will go down in the Cooper Column
the crowd responded to Paul Scott as if it had been him who had scored
the goal. The final came about from Lee Sidwell who hit the ball from
the edge of the box on the right hand side and it managed to get past
the keeper.

Your Supposed To Be At Home - AFC Wimbledon made the trip to
Kingsmeadow to be the away side in the Premier Challenge Cup match
against Merstham today. The AFC Side saw a number of changes to it
with Jamie Angel replacing Steve Gibson and Paul Scott replacing Joe
Sheerin. AFC kicked off and were defending the west bank end of the
ground. Right from the start we pushed forward and Kevin Cooper was
presented with a headed chance but it went straight to the keeper.
After 8 minutes of play Ryan Gray had to be replaced after he picked
up an injury and was replaced by Darren Dobinson. On the 15 minute
mark we scored our first goal and it came about via a bit of head
tennis in the box involving Kevin Cooper, Paul Scott and Gavin Bolger
the final headed was from Kevin Cooper and ended in the back of the
net.
Following the goal we had a number of quick shots on goal that just went wide first was Paul Scott and then it was Seb's turn to have a couple of chances. On the 20 minutes mark Paul Scott had a good headed effort but it was blocked on the line and cleared. Jamie Angell fired in a shot from about 40 yards but it was just over the bar he held a hand up to say sorry to the players for having the effort.
Gavin Bolger had a good run towards the Merstham box but before he
could get a shot in the ball was put out for a corner. The ball was
played into the box and Matt Everard had a header on goal that was
put out for a corner. After the next corner a foul was awarded against
AFC Wimbledon and Merstham cleared. The final action of the first
half involved a freekick from Kevin Cooper but after it traveled under
the wall the keeper was behind it to gather the ball up.
The ref blew the whistle for half time. At the start of the second half Seb Favata was replaced by Noel Frankum. Paul Scott was involved in the action and he played the ball to Gavin who played it through to Darren Dobbinson who's shot was wide of the goal. Paul Scott continued to create problems and he was pulled down in the box and allowed Kevin Cooper to step up and although the keeper dived the right way the ball went past him and we were 2-0 up.
With us looking very comfortable the action died down a bit but was
soon bought to life when Noel Frankum scored a rare goal with a 25
yard goal. To celebrate he ran towards the corner flag and then all
the way to the half way line when he fell on the floor in front of
the AFC bench. Just before this goal Sully had been replaced by Steve
Gibson.
With the match rapped up we fired in some more shots Danny Oakins had a brilliant shot from 30 yards but this just went over the bar. Next up was Bassey's chance and his shot had to be tipped over for a corner. As the final couple of minutes approached the 4th goal arrived and this time it was via the head of itmustbedons.com away kit sponsored Steve Gibson the ball came to the back post and rather than heading across goal he headed over the keeper and into the back of the net.The scoring want over yet and Paul Scott managed to get his first AFC Goal as he headed in from about 4 yards. Merstham kicked off and the ref blew the whistle for full time. In the next round we play Walton Casuals at home no date is know for this game yet.The Man Of The Match poll is now open and please click below to vote. |

Saturday Watch - This afternoon I went to Chipstead Vs AFC
Wallingford in the CCL league the game finished 0-0 and of the ex
AFC Wimbledon players in the Chipstead squad only Mark Nicholas was
involved and he started. About 25 AFC fans, management and players
were present and it was a very tight game the best chances ended up
going to Wallingford but the finishes were very weak. The Wallingford
side looked very young while Chipstead had more experience. The result
was greeted by cheers from the AFC Wimbledon supporters. Also at the
game was signs up saying that the game of 25th October when we play
Chipstead will be played at Whytleafe's ground and admission will
be £6 for adults and £3 for kids.
The reserves came from behind to beat Walton & Hersham 2-1 in the cup the goals came from Lewis Taylor and Keith Ward.Ally Russell made his debut for Carshalton and scored, Carshalton also won 2-1. |

01/10/2003 AFC Wimbledon 7 (S E V E N) - So where do you want me to start tonight how about 10 league wins on the trot, 43 goals in League games, another hat-trick, A defender getting 2 goals, 24 shots on goal or another clean sheet? The evening started with Andy Sullivan being caught in the traffic problems that a lot of people faced and therefore he went to the bench with Darren Dobbinson playing on the right wing. Chessington United that included in there line up Robbie Burns who had played for us last season kicked off the match and they were defending the west bank end of the ground. It was he autumnal evening and the rain made the surface slick. We were straight on the attack and Kevin Cooper had a brilliant lob over the keeper but this hit the crossbar and and was then put out for a corner. On 8 minutes we had won another corner and this time it was half cleared to the edge of the box but Matt Everard had what looked like a shot that was going straight at the keeper but it seemed to go under him and into the back of the net.
Next up for an effort on goal was Darren Dobbinson who had a shot
on goal that hit the post and Chessington cleared for a corner, from
the resulting corner Matt Everard headed over the bar. With about
15 minutes played Matt Everard could of already had a hat-trick as
a following a Gavin Bolger shot and corner Matt Everard again headed
over.
Matt Everard was soon to be provided as he flicked on a freekick from
Ryan Gray and the ball reached Kevin Cooper who was about 5 yards
out but the keeper dived at his feet and blocked the shot. As the
half hour mark came round the ball reached Joe Sheerin on the edge
of the box and he fired the ball into the back of the net to put us
2-0 up.
As in the past few games with a lead on the board we seemed to switch
into destroy mode and it wasn't long before the third and fourth goals
came about. The third was a header from the edge of the six yard box
by Danny Oakins and the 4th was another Joe Sheerin goal. As the half
drew to a close both Joe and Ryan Gray had shot but these were saved.
The ref called an end to the half and we went in 4-0 up and the points
safe in the bag.
No changes were made for AFC at the start of the second half but it was only 3 minutes before we were 5-0 up as a Kevin Cooper shot from the edge of the box gave us our 5th goal. Two minutes later we were 6-0 up as Matt Everard got his second of the evening. We continued to push forward and with 15 minutes left AFC Were awarded a penalty with Kevin Cooper off the pitch it looked like it was a choice between Joe Sheerin and Matt Everard who would take it as they were both on 2 goals, but while the crowd wanted to see Matt take it Joe stepped up and put it in the back of the net to claim another AFC hat-trick.We now have a break from league action as we play in the league cup on Sunday. The Man Of The Match vote is now open please click below to vote. |
