Comment From Tony & Academy News - Tony Readings has spoken to the Official Site about him leaving the club and it's a must read for all Dons Fans, you can read what he had to say by clicking here but as I said yesterday I wish Tony all the best for the future.

Tomorrow mornings academy session has been canceled due to the weather conditions it will be back next week before the Westfield game.

Netherne Cup Game - The cup match between Carshalton Athletic and Netherne Village has now been rescheduled for Wednesday 5th February 2003 with a 7:45 kick off lets hope it can go ahead this time.

More New Players - Two new players have joined the club and gone straight into the squad for Saturday's derby against Raynes Park Vale. One is a Midfielder while the other is a striker. More information on them can be found over on the official site.

As you would expect with the current weather the game will have a pitch inspection in the morning. If I here anything I will of course put details on here.

Tony Departs - Tony Readings who was skipper for our first league game earlier this year has left the club to take up the offer of professional contract in New Zealand. Tony apparently flies out on Sunday so it would be nice if he was at the game on Saturday so we could wish him all the best.

End Of The Road In London Senior Cup - Things just don't seem to be going right at the moment. I wasn't at the game as not well but listening to the web commentary it sounded like another frustrating game where we dominated most of the play but failed to get the victory.

A 3-0 defeat is how it ended although 2 of the goals came late on in the game with the last in the 8th minute of injury time. Based on the commentary we had loads of corners in the first half. Kevin Cooper had a couple of chances but didn't seem to be able to convert them.

As time went on it became more likely that we weren't going to score and Barkingside took the lead on 48 minutes. It was hoped that this would be the kick start that we needed but it didn't appear to be. Barkingside went 2-0 up when they scored direct from a free kick with 8 minutes left. Barkingsides 3rd goal came when Glyn Shimmel bought down an attacker and a penalty was awarded.

At the weekend we have the big derby against Raynes Park Vale and we need a big performance to get a result after the last two disappointing performances.

AFC Wallingford Withdraw Promotion Application? - A couple of rumors on the Internet regarding AFC Wallingford's application to join the Rymans league one is that they wont be able to get the ground work complete and therefore they will need to get a 3 year ground share in place. The other rumors is that they have withdrawn their application to be considered for promotion at the end of this season. What this means in terms of the Rymans promotion we don't know at present but the meeting on Thursday regarding planned re-organisation of the league may play a part in it.

Another Fine Mess - Hartley - Over the past few weeks we seem to have used up all our "Get Out Of Jail Cards" games where we have gone behind but managed to come back for atleast a point if not all three, but yesterday we got caught out.

Lee Sidwell missed his first game and was gutted about it and as mentioned Glyn was absent as well. Once again around 1,300 AFC fans made the trip down to the lovely village of Hartley Wintney but the atmosphere was flat this made up for the slope in the pitch.

Neither team seemed to have any clear chances in the first half hour but Hatley took the lead when a poor back pass failed to reach Ray Merry in goal he came out of his box but lost the 50/50 challenge to the attacker who put the ball into an empty net. Ray was still down injured and it looked for a couple of minutes if Danny Oakins may have to replace him in goal, but he was OK to continue.

As the whistle blew for half time the players traipsed off to the dressing room. Shortly afterwards a number of the players came back onto the pitch and I thought that half time went quick, it was then clear that Terry Eames wasn't happy with them and similar to the lines of the famous Dave Bassett comment at Oxford United a number of years ago when he told the players after a poor first half "You have been sunbathing first half why not have an extra 15 minutes out there" and kicked them out the dressing room.

At the start of the second half a number of changes were made Neil Robson and Gavin Boulger came on for Noel Frankum and Mark Nicholas. Right from the off we were more attacking than we had been in the first half and had a number of chances but the Hartley keeper was having a very good game.

The second goal came about when we had a free kick that Robson took and smacked against the bar but Hartley broke away and managed to score so 2-0 down and that was game over. We had a few more chances namely from Ward and Robson but couldn't get the goal that may have turned it round. Late on Ben Garner made his AFC Debut but on the whole it was a disappointing performance.

Best Wishes Ray Harford - Just been reading Paul McCarthy's page in the Sunday People and the News that ex Wimbledon Manager Ray Harford is suffering from Lung Cancer. Can I wish Ray all the best he's one of the nice guys in football and hope he's back fighting fit very soon.

Surrey Advertiser Godalming Report - The Godalming version of the Surrey Advertiser had a nice report on our game from the other week and thanks to Terry you can see it here.
26/01/2003
Goalkeeping Situation On Saturday - There was a lot of talk yesterday both at the game and after it about Glyn Shimmel not being in the team. Apparently on Friday night Glyn's wife was taken ill and Ray Merry was bought in, Ray had been suffering with a chest complaint and if he had been an outfield player he would of been unlikely to play. This may have explained why he didn't come as far out of his goal for the back pass that led to the first goal. Hopefully Glyn will be back for Wednesday's game and his Wife is OK.
25/01/2003
Bad Day At The Office - Full report tomorrow (Sunday) but for now we lost 2-0 and this could well go as our poorest display of the season. Glynn Shimmel was unavailable so Ray Merry was called in but following a weak back pass on the half hour mark allowed a Hartley attacker to score. The second Hartley goal came about in the second half following a Dons free kick that hit the crossbar and allowed them to break and score at the other end.

Andy Bell Leaves - Another player who started the season in the team has departed this time keeper Andy "Ding Dong" Bell. He broke the news in the guestbook of Weird and Wonderful World and had the following to say first about AFC Wimbledon but then about a discussion on Joe Sherrin: -

I've just had the news that I've been released. To say I'm gutted would be an understatement! I don't feel that I've shown what I can really do, so I'm going to go away, get fit and get some consistency in my game, then hopefully when I'm back in form Terry will give me a chance to prove him wrong in a positive way. Thank you to all who I've known personally during my time at the club, and to the rest of the supporters you are going to carry the team a very long way. Relating to the guestbook that I've just been reading and the comments on Joe, speaking from an 'insider's' point of view and a fellow player, Joe would always be the first name on the team sheet in whatever position you want to put him. He hasn't just got the obvious quality in his first touch, but also the heart, effort and workrate are different class. Good luck for the future, and hopefully I'll be back showing what I can do rather than what I've produced in games this season. If anyone wants to keep in touch my e-mail is andybellend@hotmail.com

Frenford Match Report and Man Of The Match Vote - Sorry for the late match report but it's here at last.

This was a strange game as the kick off was about 25 minutes late for what looked like the fact the ref and linesmen turned up late. Round about 500 fans made the trip to Ilford and a fair number of us ended up watching the game from the warmth and comfort of the new Club bar. AFC Wimbledon attacked the sandpit end of the ground in the first half and we took the lead just before the half hour mark when Andrew Petty tried to lob the reserve keeper who had come on for the starting one who had picked up an injury but he could only slow the ball down and it nestled into the back of the net.

Ten minutes later we were 2-0 up and the game was over when Petty scored again. Our 3rd goal was scored by Danny Oakins who came on as sub when we lost a number of players early on due to injuries. Steve Lawson and Lee Sidwell had both come off but Danny Oakins scored from close range.

It was just a case of playing out the game but unfortunately for about the last 15 minutes we had to play with 10 men when Ally Russell went off injured and all the substitutes had been used.

This now means that we are in the Quarter Finals and will face Waltham Abbey in the next round. The Man Of The Match vote is now open and will be until early Saturday morning so please vote as soon as possible, by clicking below: -

Godalming & Guildford Match Report - After the game earlier in the season between the two clubs turned a bit heated the ref was given to young Stephen Cook to be in charge of. Before today Stephen had refereed two of our games and both times everyone had come away with how impressed they had been. Godalming came into this game on a run of winning their previous 9 matches and moved up to 4th in the table so this would be a test for us.

A number of changes were needed due to both Andy Sullivan and Danny Oakins both out suspended due to passing the five bookings mark. In defence new boy Steve Lawson came in and he was made captain. On the bench we had two new boys in Noel Frankum, Robbie Burns as well as Andrew Petty this meant no defensive options and would come to cause a problem later on.

We attacked the academy end in the first half and once again the opposition were the first to score when they finished from close range. It wasn't long before we were level when Kevin Cooper fired one home. Just before Kevin scored Sean Daly at right back had pulled up and was in the process of being replaced with his hamstring injury when we scored. With no defenders on the bench it needed a bit of a change around Noel Frankum came on and Neil Robson moved to the unusual position for us of right back, talking to Neil after the game he said that it wasn't a problem as he has played at Right back for 12 years before.

Next on the injury list was Lee Passmore who was involved in a clash of heads and while he left the pitch you could clearly see the blood all over his face, he was off the pitch for a while but returned after needing 1 stitch. With just moments before half time we took the lead when Kevin Cooper got his second of the game and smacked it home from the edge of the box. Godalming kicked off and young Stephen Cook blew for Half time.

At half time there was a lovely moment when the wife of Kevin Sandiford who died at the end of the year placed a Wreath with Joe Sheerin in the center circle the whole ground fell silent as a mark of respect before bursting into a huge round of applause even the young academy lads stopped to observe the silence.

In the second half we continued to dominate but didn't really convert any chances. In the crowd for the game was John Scales from the 1988 Cup final team and he appeared to enjoy the game.

With 10 minutes left Stephen Cook had to make one of his few decisions of the game when the Godalming Sub was involved in an elbow incident and he sent the player straight off. The only other incident he had to deal with was when he awarded an indirect freekick inside the area for obstruction to us in the first half.

In the closing minutes Godalming had a few corners but we held firm and won another game.

AFC Wimbledon Meeting - So yesterday the AFC Wimbledon board of directors met the fans on a formal question and answer basis and the general opinion on it was that it was very good. By 11:30 there were a number of people outside Kingsmeadow and by 12:00 the back bar was packed with approximately 500 people in attendance.

Kris Stewart started the proceedings off and via the use of a Powerpoint presentation outlined the options that the club had regarding where we play next year. Kris explained that there were a number of important dates regarding applications for Rymans, Planning permission for Tooting & Mitcham and dates when we had to give notice to leave Kingsmeadow. Whatever happens unless Brentford move to Kingsmeadow we would have to pay some sort of "early release penalty" but for confidential reason Kris couldn't say how much this was. Kris also confirmed that despite stories on non AFC Website all our home games are guaranteed at Kingsmeadow.

Kris also confirmed that next years rent hasn't been agreed at Kingsmeadow although a 3 year deal the rent for the first year was only set. Kris then answered lots of questions from the floor about Tooting & Mitcham, Kingsmeadow. Next up was finance director Erik Samuelson and he showed a number of slides that showed how well the club was doing based on crowds our average attendance is something like 89th in the country and that includes conference clubs. Two figures that were of interest was one of player wages/expenses of £30,000 and stewarding of £16,000 the situation of player expenses was explained that the term expenses that has been used is used by most clubs at this level and depending if they are above a certain level is if they have to pay tax on them. The figure of £16,000 for stewards was based on the Kingstonian stewards that we use and as they have the safety certificate for the ground we have to use them.

Season ticket sales for the year are just short of 1,500 which no one can argue is incredible. Erik also raised the subject of next years season tickets which they confirmed the hoped would be no more than this season and would also talk to the fans about if they were prepared to make another optional donation like last season the advantage of this is that it is Tax and VAT free.

Next up was Ivor and he talked about the club from the Commercial side he said that things were going brilliantly. SI Games our shirt sponsors are over the moon, and as you are well aware we have had world wide media coverage. Ivor added that we have the best programme in Non League Football and Radio Wimbledon goes from strength to strength. The clubs information SMS service has just short of 2,000 subscribers. Ivor said that although the White shirt would be out in February next season no new shirt would come out.

The last person to speak from the board was Lou Carlton-Kelly who is operations director and involved in the day to day running of the club. She thanked all the volunteer's who worked on a matchday from Merchandise sellers to turnstile operators and Programme Sellers and Golden Goals sellers. She said that the police are pleased with how things are going and next season we are looking at both a family area and also numbered seats for the main stand for season ticket holders.

I thought the meeting was very good and very professional and answered a lot of questions that people had. Kris confirmed that there would be atleast one more this season as well as a Dons Trust SGM to discuss next season.

Danny Roberts Departs - As you may have read Danny Roberts has been released, after the news broke Danny posted a message on Weird & Wonderful World and in case you haven't seen it he said the following: -

I'd just like to say thanks to all of those people that made me feel very welcome at the club. I have made some very good friends & will continue to support & watch AFC play, when I can! During my short stay with the club I have experienced some great times (if brief) which I am positive will not be matched. I take some good memories with me, Kingstonian & Sandhurst away immediately spring to mind as well as a great night standing on the tables & chairs in the Blue Hawaii singing endless AFC songs with Trevor & a number of the other players! I don't feel I have done myself justice at the club, injuries, illness, suspension & loss of form really didn't help my cause. I hope to play for Netherne for a couple of games whilst I decide where to play next, so I'm sure I'll see a few of you in the bar! Thanks Again.

Danny Roberts
cyberspace - Thu Jan 16 10:17:55 2003

Netherne are due to play Carshalton on Tuesday night so hopefully Danny can get a run out and we can say thanks to him.

Behind Closed Doors - On Wednesday night AFC Wimbledon played a game against Haywards Heath in which we won 3-0 thanks to goals from Russell, Cooper and Petty. You might be thinking why wasn't this game mentioned anywhere? Well the simple reason was that it was mentioned briefly on a site but the club wanted it used as a training game to try out a couple of players.

I was aware of the game and considered going but was asked to keep the news off the site. So if anyone feels let down about not being informed about the game this was the reason why, and we get a chance to see the players in action on Saturday.

Tooting & Mitcham Report Part One - Right one thing for sure today will definitely open up a big debate about what direction AFC Wimbledon are taking. I took a number of pictures today and will do a detailed account of the day later so for the time being this is a brief report.

On a cold crisp morning a good turn out of mainly AFC fans made the trip to Imperial Fields to have a look at what could be our new "Home" from next season. The obvious thing to notice was that although it's a lovely ground for most teams at our level and even a division above if we were to go there a lot of work would need to be done.

The things that would need to be done in my opinion include: -

  •  1,000 extra seats and extended roof in the main stand.
  •  Extended roof and possible filling in of back of both Terraces.
  •  New bar area for AFC fans use.
  •  Club offices, Shop
  •  Area for sponsors for pre/post match entertaining.

A number of the points that were being made today with the main one being would the proposed "initial" 3 year deal lead into something more permanent? If you have any views on this post them on the guestbook.

Tooting & Mitcham Open Day - The open day at Tooting & Mitcham's ground takes place today from 11:00 to 13:00. This will be a chance for us to have a look round and talk to both officials of AFC Wimbledon and Tooting & Mitcham about the proposed ground share for next season. Details of how to get to the ground can be found over on the Tooting & Mitcham Site by clicking here.

Saturday's Results - Only two games survived the weather today and they saw Chessington & Hook beat Frimley Green 2-1 while Cove managed a point at Walton with a 1-1 draw. The word from Walton was that Walton scored late on a almost frozen pitch. I have updated the league table.

A Couple Of Newspaper Clips - Two bit's in the paper today first of all Jim White in the Guardian has written a very lengthy article which can be read here. The second bit is a letter to the Independent by Dickie Guy who was featured last week in a section called "Where Are They Now?" Dickie's letter is as follows: -

Sir: I am writing regarding your "Where are they now?" item on 4th January about my days as Wimbledon goalkeeper. The article was accurate until the close, when you stated that I still go to Selhurst Park and support Wimbledon FC.

This could not be further from the truth. My allegiance is now with AFC Wimbledon. I would not be seen dead supporting my old club, though these are words I never thought I would say about Wimbledon FC, for whom I played more than 500 games over 11 seasons.

I still have great respect for Wimbledon FC's players and coaching staff for what they are achieving under difficult circumstances. I have even more respect, though, for the likes of Kris Stewart, Ivor Hellor and everybody else at AFC Wimbledon. Starting with nothing, not even a team or manager, they formed their own club, appointed my old team-mate Terry Eames as manager, built a squad after holding trials on Wimbledon Common and are in second place in the Combined Counties League. So good luck to AFC Wimbledon - and please don't say I still support Wimbledon FC.

Cobham Game Off But A Trip To Watch Netherne On - As expected Saturdays game at Cobham has been called off, but it looks like we can see some AFC Players in action as Netherne Village are away at Bookham and the word is that the game is ON. Trains depart from Wimbledon at 28 & 58 minutes past the hour and the journey takes 30 minutes. As the game kicks off at 14:00 I would recommend the 12:28 as being the last train to get you there in time. The station is just under 2 miles from the ground and although it's a straight road (church road) that leads to the ground. On the following map the station is the back spot at the top and the ground is near the "H" in Bookham and can be found here.

If once you get to the station you want to get a cab there are two local cab firms - Jetstream Car Hire 01372 457483 or Bookham Dorking Leatherhead Cars on 01372 451351 this one looks nearer the station.

Tooting & Mitcham On Sunday - Just a reminder that the Open Day takes place at Tooting & Mitcham on Sunday 11:00 to 13:00 I will be over there to take my first look around the ground.

Official Site Updates - The Official Site has a number of updates tonight including details of a new player and also about changes to the backroom staff. The official Site can of course be found by clicking here.

Cobham Details - No news on the game being off at the moment but the plan earlier in the week was for the snow to be cleared off the pitch on Friday morning and hopefully the pitch should be OK for Saturday.

The train takes 20 minutes from Wimbledon to Cobham and Stoke d'Abernon which is the local station and trains depart Wimbledon at 25 and 55 minutes past the hour.

The station is about 2 miles from the ground so it may be a cab job or a pleasant stroll with a pub stop off. You can see the route you need to do by clicking on these three maps (down station road turn left and follow the main road, the big red one). First part from Station can be seen here The middle part here and then the rest of the route to the ground can be seen here.

A Number Of Games Off - Tonight's game at Carshalton Vs Netherne as well as Withdean Vs Chessington United and Southall Vs Walton have all been called off tonight, and I would imagine that the other games could go as well.

As you can imagine our game on Wednesday night has got to be in doubt and as soon as I know I will post on here.
    07/01/2003
Proposed Tuesday Night Games - A number of games are planned for Tuesday night but are of course subject to the weather anyway the league games that should be on are as follows: -

Tuesday Night Reserve Action - On Tuesday night Nertherne Village (our sort of reserve team) take on Carshalton Athletic reserves at Carshalton's ground in the 3rd Round of the Surrey Premier Cup. Most weeks Nertherne have about 7 players who are on our books on display so it could be a good chance to see the likes of Dave Towse, Trigger, Mehmet, Couchy and the others all have a run out. Directions can be found over on the Carshalton site by clicking here.
    06/01/2003
Raynes Park Match Report - Yes I know the game didn't take place but one of the best sites on the net Blind Stupid & Desperate the Watford fanzine have done a write up of there trip to Kingsmeadow on boxing day. It's well worth a read and can be found by clicking here.
    06/01/2003
Suspensions Start - Today was the day that Joe's 35 day suspensions started that he picked up in the game against Wallingford. Also out for the next 7 days is Danny Oakins so he will miss the Barkingside and Cobham matches. Danny is also due to pick up another ban in a couple of weeks I understand so he will be missing comes back and then goes missing again all in a short space of time.
    05/01/2003
Plans For This Week - After missing out on yesterday's game I hope to make up for it this week with getting in a number of games. This of course is subject to the Weather being OK and also me feeling better, but the plan for the week is as follows: -

Tuesday 7th January 2003 - Surrey Senior Premier Cup - Carshalton Athletic Vs Netherne Village 19:30
Wednesday 8th January 2003 - London Senior Cup - AFC Wimbledon Vs Barkingside 19:45

Then next Sunday 12th January from 11:00 to 13:00 Tooting & Mitcham will be holding there open day so that people can have a look and ask questions about the proposed move to Imperial Fields next season.

So that's my plans for the week I imagine I might see one or two of you at some of them games.
    04/01/2003

Southall Man Of The Match Vote - For the second week running we decided to let the other side have two goal lead but this week unlike last week we couldn't pull three goals back and only came away with a point. The goals were scored by a Kevin Cooper from a penalty with 12 minutes left and then with about 8 minutes left Lee Passmore leveled. The match official played 8 minutes injury time and the last five minutes we just attacked the goal but couldn't get the full three points.

The Man Of The Match vote is now open and you can vote by clicking below.

Saturday Matchday Service - Today's Matchday service will be a bit different as unfortunately I wont be at the game due to me being struck down by this horrible bug going round. Therefore I will still be doing the text updates but this will be based on the audio commentary that Radio Wimbledon produces. The Text Updates can be found here with the audio service available here.

Elsewhere in the division I expect a number of games to be called off but the fixture list is due to be as follows: -

Happy New Year - Well 2002 will certainly be a year that we all remember the last 6 months have been incredible and to be honest I don't think any of us a year ago could look forward and say in a years time we will have our club playing in a league 6+ divisions below where we were taking 1,000 fans to every away game and loving every minute of it.

I was looking back through the itmustbedons.com news files and saw a story from one year ago today. The story is called "more ground rumors and can be found by clicking here as I said it makes interesting reading. Anyway lets hope for a brilliant 2003.
