38 Goals But None From Headers - OK we know that Kevin Cooper
is our leading goalscorer with 38 goals (at present) but none of these
have been from headers so far. Over the last few weeks Kevin has promised
that before the season is out he will score with a header so a challenge
was laid down to him in that he would be sponsored for the stadium
fund and that we would pay up when one of his headers crosses the
line so far just short of £500 has been pledged but it would be nice
if some more pledges could be made before the weekends games. If you
want to make a pledge click the following link Sponsor
Coops and Niall will add your name to the list for sponsors.

Wednesday Night Action - Just one game tonight with Withdean
playing Chipstead. If Withdean win they would go top of the table
and we will only be able to draw level with them on points but with
them having a lot better goal difference they would finish above us.
They will next be in action on Friday night at Woking FC when they
play Ash United in the Combined Counties League Cup Final.

BBC Radio London Football Awards - As mentioned last week BBC
Radio London were looking for nominations for London Footballer of
the year, Young Footballer and Manager of the year well Kevin Cooper
has reached the final three of footballer of the year so it looks
like we need to have a mass voting this week to see if he can win
it. To vote you need to go to the BBC site which you can find here all three of the nominated managers have old Wimbledon connections so pick who you want.

27/04/2003 A Devilish Performance Sees Three More Points - Not our best performance on Saturday but in the end we picked up the three points. Early on in the game Gareth Graham picked up another knock and although he tried to continue he had to be substituted on 11 minutes and he was replaced by Noel Frankum.
The game sprung into life on the 35 minute mark when a big scuffle
broke out after consulting his linesman the referee sent off Matt
Everard and there number 5. It would appear that the player involved
in the incident for us was Danny Oakins but with Matt and Danny looking
similar it looks like the wrong player was sent off. This could be
a big blow as it means at the moment that Matt will serve a suspension
at the start of next season now it could be a 35 day ban but could
also be a 112 day ban depending what the ref puts down in his report.
On about the 40th minute just as it was looking like it was heading
for half time at 0-0 Lee Sidwell dispatched a shot from the edge of
the box that took a deflection and ended up in the back of the net.
We were 1-0 up and the relief on both the players, management and
crowd's faces was clear to see. News was also reaching us that Wallingford
were 0-0 so at this point is was looking good. The second half started and we were a lot more confident Kevin Cooper almost scored with a looping header but it just went over the bar, if it had of gone in it would of been in the region of £850 for the stadium fund as that is what has been pledged so far for Cooper to score with a header before the season is out.
As the game progressed we got more into our stride and the returning
Glyn Shimmel had little to do in goal. The second goal was set up
by Joe Sheerin he threaded the ball to Sidwell and it looked like
it had just been underhit but Lee cut in and fired the ball past the
keeper for his and our second of the afternoon as Roger Dennis the
master time keeper of Golden Goal tickets he confirmed that it was
minute 66 and therefore the winning ticket was the legendary 666 and
had most of us smiling.
With about 10 minutes remaining we were awarded a penalty and up stepped
Lee and confidently dispatched it past the keeper for his first AFC
Wimbledon hattrick. Everyone was really pleased for him and you could
see the joy in his face as he walked back to the halfway line for
the restart of the game.
The only downside on the day was the news that Wallingford had a 3-0
victory against Godalming and Guildford but anyway to get a minimum
of 3rd in our first season is an incredible achievement.
The Man Of The Match Vote is open and if you wish to vote please click below to do so: -And for the record the raffle for Keith Ward's shirt as worn in the Wallingford game raised .... yes you guessed it £666 :) |

The Run In - So we now know that the championship is between
three sides AFC Wallingford, Withdean 2000 and Us based on us getting
maximum points from our remaining games we can get 111 points this
would mean that Wallingford need 5 points (due to a better goal difference)
from there last 3 games and Withdean need only 6 points from there
7 games left. Wallingford have a tough week ahead of them with games
against Godalming & Guildford (H), Feltham (A) and Ash United (H)

25/04/2003 We've Got Ladies Over Here - You may have seen the news today that was in the South London Press and the Wimbledon News but tomorrow at the Walton Casuals game AFC Wimbledon will unveil our Ladies side for next season. This team is this years Wimbledon FC Ladies side and they recently voted at there AGM to join The Dons Trust and AFC Wimbledon.
Next season they will play in the National Division South and this
feeds into the National Division where the likes of Arsenal, Doncaster,
Fulham and Everton play so this could be very high profile for AFC
Wimbledon. Once more information is known about where and when we
will play I will let you know. You can guarantee that "It Must Be
Dons.com" will be covering the action next season. |

Cup Final For Netherne Village - Last night Netherne Village
beat Staines Lammas 3-1 down at Cranleigh FC. The final will be played
at Chipstead Football Club on 13th May 2003. This is a brilliant achievement
for Trigger and the boys and it would be really nice if we could leave
Netherne Village with a trophy before the full reserve teams starts
next season. |

23/04/2003 Raynes Park Vale Man Of The Match Vote - The Man Of The Match vote for the Raynes Park Vale game is now open and once again as it is such a hard one to call I have added the option of "The Whole Team". The vote will be open until Saturday Morning so please click below to vote. |

23/04/2003
BBC Radio London Football Awards - Wouldn't like to suggest
anything like getting lots of people to vote for someone in a radio
poll but the BBC London site is asking for "Player Of The Year" "Young
Player Of The Year""Manager Of The Year"
Now BBC London is a fan of AFC so I am sure if we put the votes
in our players could make the short-list so a suggestion on the
W&WW guestbook today was that we vote for Kevin Cooper, Gavin Bolger
and Terry Eames. If you wish to vote on there site please do so
it can be found by clicking here

Leaving On A Jet Plane Don't Know When I'll Be Back Again -
No not me but on Sunday morning about 20 AFC fans will be jumping
out of a plane near Oxford to raise funds for the ground fund. These
people will be strapped to an instructor and at the moment they step
out of the plane at 13,500 feet will be falling at 120 MPH still not
convinced they are mad well check this video link where you can see
what they will go through from the Website of the people they are
jumping at http://www.jumpwithus.co.uk/frame.html
click tandem and then the watch video link.
The 20 people doing the jump will be combining their sponsorship money
so if you want to sponsor these people you can either send your cheques
to The Dons
Trust and mark "Leap of Faith - Stadium Fund" On the back of any
Cheque or e-mail
me your pledges and I will pass them on to the people doing the
jump.
Just an update on the Golden Goals sold at the Raynes Park Vale game our split of the money was £202 so a big thanks to everyone who purchased one. The ££25 ticket of AFC Wimbledon Player 3 Minute 38 hasn't been claimed so if you have it see Roger on Saturday and he will give you your winnings. |

21/04/2003 Defenders Sees Us Past The 100 Point Marks - So the first Merton Derby today and a brilliant turnout from the AFC fans at Carshalton and the sun shone brilliantly both on and off the pitch. Simon Bassey was out injured after he came off at half time at the weekend and therefore Neil Robson came into the starting line up. Joe Sheerin and Danny Oakins came back into the starting line up.
The Dons started strongly and put pressure on Raynes Park right from
the off we had some chances to score but couldn't convert them but
on the 24 minute we won a corner and it was powered home yet again
by Matt Everard. He must be one of the most prolific Scorers from
corners in the league.
8 minutes later Matt was back in action when he headed over from about
8 yards when it seemed easier to score. 7 minutes later we were awarded
a free kick in a fairly central position about 6 yards outside the
area, this was a bit far out for the Kevin Cooper free kick so up
stepped Neil Robson who fired it over the wall and into the keepers
top right corner and we were 2-0 up.
In the last minute of the first half Danny Oakins won the ball in the box and managed to cross it before it went out of play it as it fired across the box it was met by Andy Sullivan who headed it home and we went in at half time 3-0 up. When Danny crossed the ball I thought the ref would blow for a foul but he let it go.
On 60 minute we were 4-0 up when Danny Oakins scored with a header
we were so on top it was unreal and the players were well up for this
game. The scoring wasn't over yet and Matt Everard was there to header
his second of the game and our 4th headed goal of the game and our
5th overall. The 5-0 victory also meant that all the back four except
Keith Ward had scored today and we had passed through the 100 points
which is an incredible achievement.
The only downside on the day was Wallingford's late winner against Cove and means they need to drop 5 points in 3 games for us to get second place. The Man Of The Match Vote will open on Wednesday night to allow a few more people to vote in the Viking Poll. |
|

20/04/2003 Meeting Report - Apart from the announcement of the pre-season games a couple of other points were discussed: -Season TicketsIt was confirmed that season ticket prices would be kept at the same price as last year Adults £150 Terrace £200 Seat. The request for optional donations would also be made.Seats will be numbered although in terms of allocation this would be on a first come first served basis.
The Nonsmoking sections at the west bank end of the ground would
continue next season.
Block A at the Academy end of the ground would be a Family Section.
A suggestion was made to charge more for central seats and the board said they would look into this but on a show of hands this wasn't popular.Update on Ground SituationThe contracts have still not been exchanged but a reorganisation has been done to the terms, although specific details couldn't be given it's more in our favor. So far pledges have been made in the region of £600,000, these were only from the Dons Trust forms.
A number of events have already started or are under way these
include Parachute Jump (Next Weekend 27/4), Cricket Match (29/6)
ad plans for the following - All star football match with AFC Fans,
race night, Utterly Butterly Wing Walk, programme fair, golf day,
car boot sale, Speedway evening, Night at the dogs, Rowathon - the
distance of the Atlantic, sponsored walk.
Lou pointed out that if you were unable to raise money yourself help in some of these events.Other issuesTerry Eames confirmed that Lee Harwood was "sacked" from his role as assistant manager of the reserves he said that it hadn't worked out how he would of hoped. Terry has a couple of people in mind for the job but none of them include Trevor Francis!!Asked about players for next season he said that whatever division we are in next season he thinks we will need only a couple of new players and that most of this years players will still be with us.The reserves will play next season in the Suburban League Division One and games will be played at Hampton and Richmond Football Club. |

20/04/2003
Viking Report - Yesterdays 5-0 victory over bottom of the table
will go down as one of easiest victories of the season. We started
without Joe Sheerin and Danny Oakins due to them serving suspensions
and therefore Ally Russell and Mark Nicholas came into the starting
line ups. We were 1-0 up on only 3 minutes when Matt Everard scored
from a corner with a nice powerful header and 10 minutes later we
were 2-0 up through almost an identical move. Matt now has 7 goals
for us since February and that for a central defender is brilliant.
On 32 minutes we should of been 3-0 up and another goal for a defender
but Keith Ward managed to fire one over the bar from about 5 yards
out. We went in 2-0 up at half time and it was obvious that we were
going to win this game as Viking were just not threatening us.
We went 3-0 up in the first minute of the second half with a goal
from Lee Sidwell and once again a lot of people missed the goal as
they were still in the bars. The 4th goal was just one of the most
bizzarest goals that have ever been scored to be honest I only saw
the ball roll across the line but apparently Ally Russell had a shot
from 40 odd yards and the defender and the keeper both went for it
both missed it and the ball rolled over the line and into the back
of the net. For the next 5 minutes you could just hear people chatting
round the goal saying that didn't happen did it?
The 5th goal was a cracker from Mark Nicholas and to be honest we
could of had a number of other goals. The corner count ended up 18-1
to us and there 1 was from a Mark Nicholas back pass. Must give a
mention to the Viking number 16 who although not the best footballer
in the world managed to have a laugh and a joke with the main stand
always nice to see in football. |

Amateur Cup Final
12th August 2003 - Whytleafe (a) 16th August 2003 - Season Starts. The question was raised why the Watford game was for the Millie Dowler Fund and not a stadium fund raiser Ivor explained that the Watford game had been arranged before we knew about the proposed purchase of Kingsmeadow. Ivor also thought that it would create very good public relations for us and show what a community club we are.Kris confirmed that other games would be announced but they hadn't been confirmed as of yet but we would be very impressed by them. As soon as I know them I will post them on here.

Saturday's Team News - The full squad listing is up on the
Official
Site but two players who you will notice are missing are Danny
Oakins and Joe Sheerin. Both players have reached the five booking
mark and therefore picked up a "Seven Day Ban" this ban started last
Monday and therefore both players will be available for Monday's trip
to Carshalton for the Raynes Park game. |
|
18/04/2003 Withdean's Winning Run Comes To An End - Two strange events in the CCL not only did Withdean not win, after a run of 26 winning games but they were held to a 0-0 draw by Feltham. This is only something like the 5th 0-0 draw in the ccl this season. Feltham still have to play Wallingford so lets hope they can get something off them as well. |
|
17/04/2003 Thursday Night Action - Just one game tonight and victory for Withdean 2000 will be good enough to send them top of the table. They play at home to Feltham. |

17/04/2003 Open Meeting On Saturday - Just a reminder that on Saturday from 12:00 to 2:00 will see the second open meeting of AFC Wimbledon where you will have a chance to ask the board questions about your club.
I understand that the main items on the agenda for the formal part
of it will be Next Years Season Tickets and announcement of a number
of Pre-Season Fixtures, It is rumored that we may play a number of
Conference and Football League standard clubs so it will be very interesting
to see what is announced.
The last meeting was very well attended so make sure that you are there for the start of it. |

Advance Information On The Weekend - With the long bank holiday
weekend coming up I thought I would give a bit of advanced information
on the games at the weekend. Saturday we have Viking Greenford at
Kingsmeadow and we need a big result to keep the pressure on the top
two. Then on Monday we have the first game against Raynes Park Vale.
This is the away game and will be played at Carshalton Athletics'
ground more information can be found here.
The game kicks off at 12:00 so make sure you are there early. We will
also be selling Golden Goal Tickets with the money split between the
Stadium Fund, Raynes Park Vale and a local charity.

As you can see some very good times and these are the times from when
the official clock started so most of these can have about 10 minutes
taken off them. If anyone is thinking why has Karen got a lower finishing
position to Nick it's due to her being in the Women's field.
Nick sent me an e-mail and I am sure he wont mind me reprinting it
here: -
It was a great experience, made more so by a large number of people
cheering for AFCW as I passed, and also beating the franchise runner
towards the end. I really appreciated the support from everyone, it
did help get me round. Combined with our winning and both Wallingford
and Franchise losing, it made quite a successful weekend all round.
As I live in Woking I may see you at the Westfiled Vs Wallingford
game tomorrow - look out for somebody with stiff legs and a sunburned
head!
If anyone knows of any other AFC fans that ran the London Marathon
please let me know and I will post there times on here as well.

Travel To Old Ruts - This afternoon sees this charity game
at Old Ruts where in the first half you get the pleasure of watching
Ivor and Marc Jones display there football ability alongside Terry
Eames. The second half is likely to see a number of the AFC firs team
in action including Glyn Shimmel upfront.
The easiest way to get to the ground that is in Poplar Road Merton
is a tram from Wimbledon to Merton Park and then walk down Dorset
Road and then down Poplar Road where the ground is on. A map of the
area can be seen here.
More information on the event can be seen here.

13/04/2003 Good Luck To Steve And Lee - Just like to wish Steve Elson and Lee Willetts good luck in today's London Marathon they are hoping to complete the course in 4 hours so should finish by about 2pm. They also hope to be able to carry one of the AFC Wimbledon England Flags over the last half mile of the course so keep an eye out for it on the TV.
Don't forget you can still pledge money and all money now pledged
will go to the ground fund as the amount needed for HemiHelp has been
passed. |

And Then There Were Three - So the championship race is now
down to three teams although it looks like Withdean will end up by
winning it by a number of points after today's results. For people
that can remember back a few seasons we went on a trip to Tranmere
by Limo and today was very much like that day apart from the limo.
The game was played at Woking FC ground which is a couple of hundred
yards from Westfields ground and Woking have one of the biggest behind
goal stands outside of league football, (it holds about 2,200) for
people at the Tranmere game you may remember how steep it was well
this was just like it and AFC fans packed it today (OK it may have
been half full but it looked packed).
The players came out to a brilliant reception and in the first half
we attacked the big stand. We should of had a penalty in the first
minute but the ref didn't see the handball and only gave us a corner.
We took the lead on 13 minutes when Kevin Cooper scored and I must
say that the noise afterwards was brilliant with the "Super Kevin
Cooper" song rocking the stadium. We continued to press forward and
had a number of chances but the keeper made some brilliant saves to
keep the score at 1-0. Our defence had very little to do and things
were looking good. A rumor started to go round the stand that Wallingford
were 1-0 down and this pleased everyone even more.
One of the things that most of us have missed this season has been
being told off by Stewards and today as we were at a Conference ground
we had that pleasure. Sitting (well standing) in the back row of a
big stand when there is no advertising was not even allowed today
and it even got to the point where people were told "In you want to
stand go on the terrace". A few of the old songs came out "Stand Up
If You Love The Dons" that just made it more fun.
Half Time came and we had played really well and we were 1-0 up. Most
of the people left the stand to go behind the goal for the second
half that we were attacking so the big stand became fairly empty.
We didn't make any changes at half time. The second goal was after
about 15 minutes of the second half when Andy Sullivan scored. We
were playing really well and were well in control. After about 25
minutes of the half we were 3-0 when Joe Sheerin made a lovely finish.
The 4th and final goal of the afternoon will be argued out between
the "twins" Matt Everard had a powerful header that may of been being
saved by the keeper but at the Last moment Danny Oakins got his knee
to it to change the direction of it and put it into the back of the
net.
We had heard that Wallingford were 2-0 down but when it was confirmed that they had lost 3-0 we went crazy the gap is now down to just 1 point and they have a game in hand when they play Westfield away on Tuesday night a number of us will be going down to cheer on Westfield so if you fancy an evenings football make the trip down.To vote for the Man Of The Match Please click below. |

07/04/2003 Bullseye Target Hit - After the brilliant performance of the previous Saturday it was always going to be a drop down to earth on Saturday with the visit of Frimley Green.
Although another brilliant crowd of over 2,800 (The second highest
Non League crowd of the weekend again) the atmosphere didn't have
the sparkle of last week. The game started with AFC attacking the
Academy End of the ground. To be honest I wasn't paying an awful lot
of attention to the game as we were busy putting the raffle tickets
into the drum for the half time draw. From what I do remember we seemed
to hit the post a couple of times the best one being when Kevin Cooper
curled one and it looked like it was going in but came off the inside
of the post.
With the Grand National taking place at half time a lot of people rushed to the bars and it could be said that the Frimley Green players could of had there minds on the race at the start of the second half. AFC had a corner and it was played into the box and from close range Lee Sidwell fired home. We were 1-0 up and a lot of people missed the goal.
We continued to push forward and continued to hit the posts. Frimley
didn't really trouble us and although we only won 1-0 up it was a
lot more convincing than what it sounds. Once again there was another
punch up but no one was sent off. Frimley were reduced to 10 men late
on when one of there defenders was sent off for foul and abusive language.
So another 3 points and with Withdean beating Wallingford the gap between us and Wallingford is down to 4 points although they have a game in hand so it's still all to play for. As we need to finish second to be in with a chance to be promoted. |

Saturday's Raffle & Sweepstake Result - Big thanks to everyone
who purchased raffle tickets at the ground yesterday we raised £1065.09
as well as the £585 profit on Golden Goals tickets and £100 from my
grand national Sweepstake it was another good day for the ground fund.
The winner of my Grand National Sweepstake was June Rhodes who is
better known as one half of the Wakefield Wombles. June and Kevin
were going to cut back on games this season but with there winnings
they will now be going to next weeks game at Westfield by train. June
and Kevin are two of the unsung heroes of this season they drive down
from Wakefield in Yorkshire to every home game (and a number of away
games) to watch the game but not just that they help on the merchandise
team and therefore have left home by 7am every Saturday to be at Kingsmeadow
by 11am. |

06/04/2003
Saturday's Results - The big result of yesterday was Withdean's
3-1 victory over AFC Wallingford. This looks like Withdean will now
go on to win the league and Wallingford have now lost three games
on the trot. It looks like our best chance of finishing 2nd is to
finish above Wallingford as the gap is now only 4 points but they
have a game in hand. The full list of yesterday's results are as follows:
-
Saturday 5th April
Premier Division
AFC Wimbledon 1-0 Frimley Green
Ash United 3-5 Chessington & Hook
Chessington United 0-1 North Greenford Utd

Saturday Matchday Service- Big game in the league today with
Wallingford making the trip down to Withdean this match could well
decide who wins the Championship this year. Meanwhile at Kingsmeadow
today we have a visit from Frimley Green and with the weather being
nice it would be good to have another 3,000 plus crowd to cheer the
boys on, remember that the issue of promotion is not over yet but
we need to get as many points as possible so if we can make an atmosphere
like we did last week it would be brilliant.
For people who cant get to the game the audio and text updates will
be in operation the text updates can be seen by clicking here
and the audio commentary can be listened to by clicking here. The other games in the league today are as follows: -

Last Nights Results - Big shock last night with AFC Wallingford
losing 4-2 at North Greenford United, Wallingford are now 7 points
ahead of us with 1 game in hand and at the weekend take on Withdean
2000, they apparently had 8 players missing last night.
There seems to be a couple of problems with the league table and I will sort this out but last nights results were as follows: -
Tuesday 1st April
Premier Division
Chessington & Hook 1-2 Westfield
Chipstead 0-0 Godalming & G
North Greenford Utd 4-2 AFC Wallingford

Player Of The Year Vote - OK It's that time of year again we
we have to select who has been our best player of 2002/03. Nobody
can say that every player that has pulled on the Yellow and Blue shirt
this season hasn't been a complete hero so it will be interesting
to see who you all vote for this year.
The vote will remain open to the end of April and it will be announced at our last game of the season, remember this is the It Must Be Dons Player of the year and not any official vote that will also be taking place.
I know a lot of people will find it hard to single out one player
so I have added a "Whole Team" option if this is the case the award
will be presented to Joe Sheerin as Club Captain and Terry Eames as
Manager. Anyway to start voting please click here.

a fund raiser idea for this weekend and anyone from anywhere in the
world can join in. This weekend in the UK see the Grand National and

paid to the winner and £100 to The Stadium Fund. If more than 40 people
enter I will start a new Sweepsteak so the more people who enter the
more money for the stadium fund.
You can enter by two ways you can either e-mail me at paul@itmustbedons.com
