Crowds, Sending Off's, Wonder Goals & Victory - So a damp wet
cold evening down at Kingsmeadow for a London Senior Cup 1st round
tie saw 1,403 people turn up to witness a 4-0 victory over Woodford
Town. The main talking points of the evening came when late on Woodford
had two players sent off neither waited for the card and just ran
off taking of there shirts and then a goal by Danny Oakins which
was scored from the half we were defending right out on the touch
line. It would be fair to say if measured it would come in at 65 yards
and a cracking end to the evening the other goals were scored by Gavin
Boulger and Kevin Cooper who scored twice including direct from a
free kick for the second game running. |

Cobham Match & Karaoke Photos - The photos from both the match
and also the Karaoke in the evening can be viewed by clicking here.
|
|
27/10/2002 From Hat-Trick Hero to Karaoke King - So far a number of players have gone close to being the first ever AFC Wimbledon player to score a hat-trick with Joe Sheerin, Kevin Cooper & Danny Oakins getting 2 goals each but the honour of the first ever AFC hat trick goes to Ali Russell.
Ali's first goal came after 8 minutes when he headed home but on 17
minutes he scored a goal that you can only say if it was scored in
the premiership it would be on constant loop on every TV channel.
The ball came to Cooper on the half way line but as he tried to go
round a player the ball hit the Cobham player and fell to Russell
who from a good 45 yards hit the ball and as the keeper tracked back
flew over his head and into the back of the net.
I found the first half really strange as although we had the majority
of the possession and were putting in good crosses we didn't appear
apart from the goals to have any real efforts on goal that forced
the keeper into a save. We went into half time 2-0 up and the points
looking safe in the bag.
The second half continued in the same way as the first and after a brilliant run by Danny Oakins he crossed the ball into the box to be met by Ali who forced it home and then ran to the West Bank to celebrate. The match wasn't over yet as AFC Wimbledon were awarded a free kick on the edge of the box and Danny Oakins and Kevin Cooper discussed who was going to take it, Kevin won the discussion and Kevin curled it home into the bottom left hand corner for a 4-0 scoreline.
The evening wasn't over yet as Karaoke was due up in the bar after
the usual set from Kris Stewart, Terry & Anne Eames were called up
then it was Ali's turn and after having to be dragged to the stage
I think he ended up doing 4 numbers and a brilliant time was had by
all. |

***** Game Off ***** - Tonight's game was called off round
about 4:40 tonight. No new date is known yet. - With this game being off as long as the game isint played this week (it wont) Keith Ward will now only miss one game rather than the expected two. |
|
22/10/2002 Tonight's Action - Tonight we start our campaign for the Cherry Reds Books Trophy when we take on Ditton. Any plan to use some of the reserves players tonight went out the window when they played for Netherne Village in the competition on Saturday in there 7-5 victory. One player who will be missing will be Keith Ward who starts his 2 match ban tonight, Danny Oakins will return to defence.
There is unlikely to be any audio commentary so it will just be me
and the text updates I'm afraid over at http://www.gash.net/afcw/.
As ever full service after the game. |

Some More Sad News - Over the weekend I received the following
e-mail: -
My name is Roland Kennedy and I am 11 years old. I do not have a
season ticket but I watch AFC Wimbledon whenever I can.
My Godfather supported Wimbledon FC since the 1970s and since it's
formation, AFC Wimbledon. He was a season ticket holder. He passed
away on Friday from a very serious heart attack. He was a very keen
supporter from the start.
His name was Soteris Chrysostomou. He was only 43 and leaves a widow and 2 young children.Roland KennedyOnce again I am sure that the thoughts of all AFC fans are with everyone connected to the family. |

20/10/2002 Fixture Date And Venue Change - A number of site round the net have a Date and Venue change for our game away at Viking Greenford. The game is now to be played at Hayes ground and is moved from Saturday 30th November 2002 to Sunday 1st December 2002. Once I have more information I will post it for everyone. |
|
20/10/2002 Victory At Farnham - So a 1-0 victory with a late goal but this doesn't tell the full story of the day. The game was delayed for 15 minutes due to the travel problems that had been on the roads and allow the 1,100 AFC fans into the ground.
Rumors before the game suggested that Farnham goalkeeper for the day
was there normal midfield player due to an injury to the keeper but
this later turned out to be there second choice keeper but he had
a very good game. On the turnstile was also believed to be there star
striker who was suspended.
In the starting line up for the Dons was Ray Merry in goal but no Conrad Kane who was playing one final time for Whytleafe before joining us on Monday. The ground was a strange one as behind one end was an elevated terrace where the feet of the fans were at the same level as the cross bar and at the other end no fans were behind the goal as there was no room to stand. The players dressing rooms were across the car park which once again was a bit different. The Dons attacked the empty end in the first half and although we had a number of chances we couldn't find the target. The best chances were falling to Kevin Cooper, Danny Oakins who was upfront and also Gavin Bolger. At half time it was 0-0 but during the break it was nice to see both Glyn Shimmel and Andy Bell out kicking a ball about.
The grass was really long and the pitch bumpy and we continued to
battle away trying to get the goal we needed as it didn't look like
Farnham would score as they were playing just one upfront. With about
20 minutes left Ali Russell came on for Kevin Cooper
We started to pepper there goal and Gavin Bolger could have had a
hat-trick with various shots and headers but they just weren't going
in. Then with just 3 minutes left on the clock Ali Russell was being
fouled on the edge of the box but unleashed a shot that smacked the
cross bar and came back but to his credit the ref called it back for
the foul and in Danny Oakins words "I saw the keeper lining up the
wall and I just smacked it" and it bobbled along the pitch and into
the back of the net the relief around the ground was everywhere to
be seen but the day was about to get better as when we got to the
bar the word was going round that Ash United had lost once this was
confirmed the beers flowed.
The Man Of The Match vote is now open and to vote please click below. |

kick in the 87 minute and also saw Ash United lose 5-3 at home to

a game in hand. |

Team News - As mentioned earlier in the week Glyn Shimmel had
an operation on Monday so today will see the AFC Wimbledon debut for
Ray Merry the Netherne Village keeper. Also joining us today is Conrad
Kane who has played for Tooting & Mitcham in the past although Conrad
is 39 years of age he apparently has the fitness of a 20 year old
and is known to bang the goals in from distance lets hope he can do
the business for us.
Keith Ward plays his last game before a week off following his sending
off at Ash a couple of months ago. |

|
|
18/10/2002 Feltham Result And League Table - As you may have seen on Wednesday Feltham lost 3-2 at home to Westfield this means we remain 4th in the table.
I have updated the table and there were a couple of errors in it (now
sorted) sorry about that, and thanks to Rob at http://www.afc-wombles.com/. None of the changes effect our end of the tables.

17/10/2002
Travel To Farnham Town - OK first up if you live between Streatham
and Sutton and normally get the thameslink to Wimbledon for onward
travel you will need to know that the service is suspended this week
and although there is a replacement bus service it adds a fair amount
of time to the journey. If you are also coming from Tooting way Plough
Lane is closed so it could take even longer a 57 bus may be the way
to go if you live near the route.
The train you get from Wimbledon is either direct to Woking and then
change or train to Surbiton then Woking then Farnham. The easiest
route from Wimbledon is as follows: - 12:50 leave Wimbledon 13:11
arrive Woking 13:16 leave Woking 13:39 arrive Farnham the times are
the same for the 13:50 but just an hour later.
On the following map
the red dot is the train station and the ground is where it says babbs

Glyn Shimell Out For Few Games - I understand that Glyn Shimmel
went in to hospital for an operation that he had been due to have
for a while today at present I don't know how long he will be out
for. With Andy Bell also out at the moment all though he has just
started doing light training it looks like the next few games could
well see a new goalkeeper appearing for us. The rumors going round
is that it will be the keeper that has been playing for Netherne Village
for the past few games. |

Sad News From Australia - Robert Smith of AFC Wimbledon Down
Under Supporters Association posted the following on the WISA site
over the weekend and I thought it would be nice to see the support
we get from round the world, I am sure all our thoughts are with the
Family of Jack Russell.
Jack Russell passed away in an Adelaide hospital last Sunday. He
was 85. A wonderful supporter of Wimbledon FC and latterly AFC
Wimbledon, Jack was a foundation member of Wimbledon Downunder
Supporters' Association (WDSA). His son, Paul, a passionate
Dons' man, says: "Jack's funeral went well. I think he would
have loved it. We draped the coffin with Wimbo scarves and
played the "We are Wimbledon" song as part of the service." Jack
was at Wimbledon's FA Cup amateur victory over Sutton at Wembley
in 1963 before emigrating to Australia and hosted a legendary FA
Cup party at his Adelaide home on the night of May 14, 1988.
There was hardly a dry eye in the house that night, much the
same as it was this week as we at WDSA mourn the passing of a
deeply-respected, caring Dons' man. Your memory will stay with
us, Jack. |

Under 9 Game - On Saturday the Under 9's had there debut against
a strong Walton Casuals who last year won the league and cup. At half

but well done to every one involved. |

International AFC - If you watched the England game on the
BBC you would have seen the AFC Wimbledon Flag above the exit of the
England fans. I am not sure who took it out there as a number of fans
made the trip well done to all that went. I also Understand that Jonathan
Pearce gave it a mention on Radio 5. |
|
12/10/2002 Southall In Next Round After Win On Penalties - Our second cup game of the season and our second win on penalties. To be honest it wasn't a classic but Kevin Cooper put us 1-0 up with almost the last kick of the second half.
With 15 minutes remaining of the second half Glyn Shimmel thought
that a looping effort was going in when it looked like it was going
wide and managed to deflect it into his own net. Not much more happened
in Extra time and so it was penalties, once again all our player scored
and with Walton missing 2 we won 4-1 and now face Southall at Kingsmeadow
in the next round.

Walton Today - As you may know a lot of entertainment going
on today down at Walton with Music an under 9's football match (kicks
off 1:45) and then after the football they will be showing the England
game in the clubhouse, look out for the large AFC Wimbledon flag that
will be at the game. One person who wont be entertaining us is Mr
Fish who was the referee at last weeks game, he was a late replacement
for last weeks game and due to be in-charge at today's game but following
the match he has been changed.
Just before kick off today a minutes silence will be held to remember Milly Dowler who was from Walton and this is an opportunity for her local community to show there respects. I am sure that it goes without saying that all Dons fans will show there respect for her as well. |

Never Say Netherne - Tonight I made the trip down to Westfield
to see the Surrey Intermediate Cup Match between Westfield reserves
and Netherne. The Netherne team had a number of AFC Wimbledon players
in it including Akin Gallimore, Dave Fry, Daniel Couch, Mehmet Mehmet,
Trigger, Dave Towse & Daniel Jones sorry if I missed anyone. When
I first got there the place was empty and to be fair to Westfield
the ground is very basic. They hadn't even planned on charging any
admission and about 100 AFC Wimbledon fans had made the trip easily
Westfield's biggest crowd of the season.
Netherne soon went two goals up when first Dave Towse scored and then Sim Johnson scored but by half time the score was 2-1 and then Westfield pulled it back to 2-2 and it looked like extra time and penalties could be on the card and not the game of siccisor paper stone that was suggested by some sections of the fans. But with a few minutes left Trigger managed to head home a chance to put Netherne into the next round where they will be away to Cobham reserves.Just before half time a Westfield official came round with a collection box and it was good to see everyone putting in a few quid. A lot of people were talking about when we make the trip down there for the league game and although the word is that it can hold 1,200 some people were suggesting it may be played over the road at Woking. |

06/10/2002 And I thought This Was an Eleven Aside Game? - For the second game running both sides finished with 10 men AFC Wimbledon also had Terry Eames and our Fitness coach sent to the stand but the main thing was we came away with the points in the bag.
Neil Robson returned to the starting line up as well as Andy Sullivan
and things started really well when just on 3 minutes Kevin Cooper
had a shot from the edge of the box across the keeper and it went
in at the far side to give us a 1-0 lead. We continued to play well
but very few clear cut chances were being produced then just after
the half hour Godalming & Guildford had a shot from the edge of the
box which curled into the top corner to put the scores level, it was
a very good goal and most of the AFC Wimbledon supporters applauded
it.
As the half began to draw to a close Joe Sheerin all of a sudden went
down in the box and it was clear that he would have to go off the
word is that he heard his Hamstring "pop" and therefore could be out
for a good 6 weeks. As Joe was limping round the pitch Danny Oakins
managed to lob the ball over the keeper and manage to get it under
the bar to put us 2-1 up at the break. Although we had a penalty appeal
in the first half turned down little did we know what was to come
in the second half.
After Ali Russell had replaced Joe Sheerin in the first half the game
restarted and Russell was straight into the action with an effort
that just went wide. Russell also had a chance to play the ball across
to an unmarked Cooper but his cross ended up with the keeper. Then
on the 60 minute mark Cooper lobbed the keeper for a similar goal
to Danny Oakins to put us 3-1 up. Cooper ran straight over to the
bench to celebrate with Terry Eames.
It was from this point that the ref seemed to lose control he had
already been giving silly free kicks and had already booked a number
of our players but then a few of the Godalming players appeared to
be trying to wind our players up including Danny Oakins. A number
of off the ball incidents seemed to be going on but the ref although
having words took no action then after awarding AFC a free kick he
booked two Godalming players and sent off Neil Robson, I didn't see
what for but I assumed for an off the ball incident, people around
me said that one of the players had thrown a punch, we were once again
down to 10 men and soon afterwards Terry was asked to sit in the stand
as he may have questioned the ref's ability to ref the game. By this
stage Sean Marshall had replaced Kevin Cooper. The ref's day wasn't
finished yet after the number 8 of Godalming done a bad challenge
on one of our players right in front of our bench our fitness coach
ran on the pitch to "have words" both the number 8 and our fitness
coach were sent off and it looked like the ref took the names of everyone
on our bench.
The rest of the game came to a boring end but the second half lasted almost an hour as the AFC Wimbledon players left the pitch the fans celebrated 3 hard won points. If you wish to vote for Man Of The Match please click below. |

10 Aside And Six Goals - Tonight we moved joint 3rd in the
table and only 4 goals behind AFC Wallingford after our 5-1 victory.
After only 20 minutes Simon Bassey was booked and only a couple of
minutes later he could of left the pitch after an after the ball incident
occurred but the ref didn't see this. A couple of minutes latter both
sides were reduced to 10 men when Bassey and there number 3 were ordered
from the pitch for having a fight on the floor.
The Dons took the lead on 32 minutes when good work by Kevin Cooper
allowed him to cross for Sheerin to score his third goal in two games.
The game seemed to be in our control but right on half time they broke
from the halfway line and dispatched a shot after our defenders had
let the player run at them the ball went past Glyn and it was 1-1
at half time.
In the first minute of the second half Lee Sidwell got the ball on
the edge of the box and cut in then shot across the keeper to put
us 2-1 up we continued to push forward and Cooper had a shot from
the edge of the box that went over. It looked like the match would
finish 2-1 but we ended up having 3 goals in the final 5 minutes first
up was Sheerin's second then Ali Russell put one in with a side high
kick from about 8 yards and then in the last minute a Keith Ward header
that looked like it was going in was touched over the line by Danny
Oakins.
Scoring goals late on in games could well be important as we may need goal difference to climb the league and once teams go a couple down there heads seem to drop so once again a good night. After the game there was a lot of talk about who the Man Of The Match was but now you should get your chance to vote by clicking below. |
