Late Christmas Presents Given Before Comeback Starts - Following
the disappointment of the Boxing Day game being called off a large
Dons traveling support of well over 1,500 made the trip to Whytleafe
for the match against Chipstead. Chipstead were of course the first
team that we played at Kingsmeaddow and they came away with a 2-1
victory so we wanted to put the record straight.
Keith Ward started in defence following the unavailability of Sean
Daly due to a prior engagement. Whytleafes game on Thursday had been
called off and although the pitch looked OK near the goals the middle
of the pitch was very boggy. Whytleafes ground was very nice with
banked terracing down one side and also a large seating area behind
one of the goals and a covered terrace at the other end. This meant
that the congregated Dons fans could get a good atmosphere going.
The first half was a tight affair with a couple of chances for each
team but Chipstead were getting the better of us with balls down the
channels and there two fast attackers running on to them. On 42 minutes
Chipstead took full advantage of this when a ball was played past
our defence and Chipstead forward ran on to it Glyn Shimmel seemed
to be a bit hesitant off his line and by the time he reacted the striker
had time to get ready for his shot and he put it under Glyn's body
and Chipstead were 1-0 up. The goal was given as 42 minutes but it
seemed that the half time whistle was blown immediately, so we went
in 1-0 down.
At half time Neil Robson was replaced in midfield by Lee Passmore.
We started to put the pressure on and Gavin Boulger had an effort
at goal but this was saved and then a header from Joe Sheerin went
wide of the goal. Just as we looked like we were getting back into
it we got caught out again when Chipstead scored an identical goal
to the first we were 2-0 down and things weren't looking good.
Now I don't want to claim credit for what turned out to be the start of our comeback but when we won a corner I made a comment of "If we can score in the next 5 minutes we will be back in this" The ball was played in and was met by Keith Ward who was leaping in the air and headed the ball into the back of the net. We were 2-1 down and things were looking a bit better.
Andrew Petty came on to replace Kevin Cooper at the restart of the
game for the next 15 minutes we pushed forward but couldn't convert
any chances. Chipstead looked like they had used up all there attacking
options then with 15 minutes left we won another corner the ball came
out to Mark Nicholas who was about 10 yards out and he smacked the
ball through a crowded area that ended up in the back of the net.
Talking to people afterwards they said that the ball crashed up against
the crossbar and came down and hit a Chipstead defender in the face
and went over the line. It was now 2-2 and The Dons fans were going
mental with a buzz round the whole ground.
Almost direct from the kick off we were in the lead when the ball
came through to Joe Sheerin and he chipped the ball over the keeper
and into the back of the net. From 2-0 down we were 3-2 up and there
was still 10 minutes to go. In the closing moments Joe was replaced
by Ali Russell and we managed to hold the score as it was and another
important 3 points were won.
In my opinion Chipstead deserved to be 2 goals up but we battled well to win the game and I think it shows the benefit of our fitness coach that we have. Chipstead also had a tough game down at Merstham on Boxing Day and that could well have told on them as well. |

*** GAME IS OFF *** - Update at 11:45 The game has just been called off due to the pitch being waterlogged :( -It looks as if the Merton Derby
could be off today due to a waterlogged pitch. We wont know until
the Ref or Assistant ref gets to the game but that wont be before
11:30. The word is that there is standing water on the pitch and only
an estimated 10% chance of the game going ahead. As soon as it is
confirmed one way or the other I will update the site.

Dear Santa - I hope I haven't left it to late to drop you a
line and I know you are very busy at the moment what with the time
differences round the world you may well have already started your
rounds for this year.
This may be a bit strange but I don't really want any presents on
Wednesday as I and many of my friends had the best present ever earlier
in the year. If you are thinking you may have a rouge Santa trying
to do you out of business don't worry.
The present was given to us in June and although at the time I was
wary of it I can now say that it was the best thing I have ever been
an owner of. I know you normally give individual presents but owning just one fraction of this present is brilliant.A lot of people do a lot of hard work making sure that the present is looked after and to them I hope they all get lots of nice presents to thank them for there hard work.Anyway I don't want to keep you too long so I will sign off now. Oh I almost forgot to say what the present was it was "AFC Wimbledon".Merry Christmas Paul Raymond
P.S. If you want to make my Christmas a victory on Boxing Day would
just top it off :-) |

Advance Travel Information For Boxing Day - If you are traveling
to Kingsmeadow for Thursday game you are either going to have to travel
by Car, Bus or Walk as no trains are running. Both the 57 and 131
will be running from about 9:00 in the morning but no idea of how
often they will be running is given. If you get a 131 it will go right
outside Kingsmeadow but if you get the 57 you may wish to get off
the bus the stop before it turns to go past Kingston hospital. When
you get off the bus take the first left (Gloucester Road) and go right
to the end then turn left and Kingsmeadow is just on your right. The
following Map may help.

23/12/2002 Walton Match Report - After our League cup victory over Walton and there recent narrow defeat to Wallingford this looked like it could well be a tough game but in the end this was perhaps one of our best performances of the season.
The game started in foggy conditions with a light drizzle falling
and Walton seemed to be first into the game having a couple of shots
and forcing a good save out of Shims in goal. After about 10 minutes
we started to get into the game and then we took the lead in what
I can only describe as one of the strangest own goals I have ever
seen. We won a corner and the ball was played in the ball was partly
cleared and a Dons player returned it back into the box although a
couple of AFC players were in the box none of them were near where
the ball was going and it looked like it was going wide of the goal
then from nowhere the Walton number 8 who was 4 yards out decided
he would head it only problem was he was facing the goal and the keeper
was the other side of the goal. Everyone stood in disbelief as the
ball shot into the back of the net, the nearest Dons Player Danny
Oakins decided to celebrate with the fans rather than say thanks to
there number 8.
The goal relaxed everyone and our second goal came from Kevin Cooper
when he had a shot in the box that went through several players legs
and may have even taken a deflection before reaching the back of the
net. Right on half time we were awarded a penalty when one of our
players was bought down in the area the Walton player was sent off
which a lot of us thought was very hard. Kevin Cooper stepped up and
dispatched the ball into the top corner as Walton kicked off the ref
blew the whistle for half time.
One of the things that a lot of fans have said this season is that
we take our foot off the peddle once we get a lead and that we don't
get the big scores like some teams in the division. Well although
we only scored another 2 goals in the second half this was one time
that we could well have got 5 or 6 in the second half but the keeper
had a brilliant second half performance.
Kevin Cooper rounded off his hat-trick when he rounded the keeper to blast into an empty net. This was his first hat-trick for us and he was quoted on Sunday saying how proud he was to get it and that how at the start of the season he hoped to get 35 goals and he has 23 already. The rain was falling really hard now but as ever the Dons fans were over the moon with the score and performance but it wasn't finished yet as the 5th goal came from a Sean Daly drive which Neil Robson tried to get a touch on but couldn't.The day wasn't finished as the Number 8 who scored the own goal ended up being sent off as Walton were reduced to 9 men. Another 5 goals for us and another 3 points in the bag and set's us up for the Boxing Day Derby against Raynes Park Vale. |

What will the capacity be? - 4,500 subject to planing permission
with 1,650 seats this is an additional 1000 seats on the current capacity.

Where can I read the statement? - As ever on our Official

18/12/2002 Silk & Steel Performance - So at the 3rd Attempt the game against Ditton got played and after a silky second half performance we came out with a 5-1 victory.
We took the lead in the opening minutes when Andrew Petty scored from
close range. The rest of the first half was fairly tight with both
teams having a few chances. At half time Lee Passmore was replaced
by Neil Robson. The second half was a lot better and goals a brilliant
goal from Ali Russell came after 10 minutes Danny Oakins crossed a
brilliant ball to the edge of the 6 yard box and Ali dived and bullet
headed the ball past the keeper.
Petty got his second of the night a couple of minutes later and then
he got his hat-trick with a brilliant lob over the keeper. The Oakins
and Petty Show wasn't over yet as Danny crossed in another brilliant
ball for petty to put in at the back post from close range his 4th
and our 5th on the night. Ditton were reduced to 10 men and then went
up the other end and managed to pull one back. Then in the final minute
Danny Oakins was bought down in the box and a penalty was awarded
Danny and Andrew had discussions over who should take it but as Captain
Danny took the penalty but it was saved. Final Score 5-1 to AFCW.

Two More Suspensions - Both Danny Oakins and Joe Sheerin have
received there suspensions that will start on 6th January 2003. Danny
has got a 7 day ban but at the moment it's not clear if this is for
the sending off or for a number of bookings and Joe has received 35
days for his sending off at Wallingford. Talking to Terry on Saturday
he said that although 35 Days is harsh for swearing there is no point
in appealing as it's a case of Joe's word against the Ref's and if
we lost the appeal the ban could be extended. |

Kids Christmas Party Review - So yesterday was the AFC Wimbledon
/ Junior Dons Trust Christmas Party and what a brilliant afternoon
it was. Although to be honest I am not sure who enjoyed themselves
more the 90 kids or a couple of the helpers (yes you know who you
are).
The afternoon went really well with the usual games, food and visit
from Santa and everyone had a brilliant time.
Just want to thank a number of people who put a lot of effort into making sure that it went well. Linda & Roger Dennis, Kathy Cork, Anne Eames the other helpers and also the players who turned up either with or without Kids to help in handing out the presents, the list of players from my memory were Joe Sheerin, Kevin Cooper, Glyn Shimmel, Daniel Couch, Trigger, Keith Ward, Neil Robson, Sean Daly, Andy Sullivan, Simon Bassey and Terry Eames. |

15/12/2002
Saturday Match Report - So the return game against Sandhurst
after the memorable first league game of the season played back in
August. Neil Robson started in midfield with Gavin on the bench.
It started off with the Dons attacking the west bank and was a slow
game but following an AFC attack on 20 minutes Sandhurst counter attacked
and a played chipped Glyn who was about 15 yards off his line and
they were one up. Earlier on in the game Neil Robson had left the
pitch following a head injury but soon returned.
The Dons continued to press forward and Kevin Cooper leveled the scores
when he took a free kick on the edge of the box. He hit the ball low
and there wall jumped over it and although it looked like it was going
in it was deflected into the back of the net by a defender. With the
whistle about to blow for half time Kevin Cooper had a shot at goal
this was cleared off the line and cam to lee Passmore who although
he didn't appear to hit it cleanly fired it into the back of the net.
Although the second half ended goal-less the talking point was the
late dismissal of Sean Daly who was sent off for two bookable offenses.
The second is believed to be for kicking the ball away moments after
the whistle had blown. It wasn't a dirty game and was very harsh.
The final whistle went and although not a classic game we went home
with the points. |

15/12/2002 *** AFC Wimbledon Statement Regarding Tooting & Mitcham *** - I have been asked by the board of AFC Wimbledon to post the following statement regarding the earlier news about Tooting and Mitcham. The statement is as follows: -
You may have seen a note on the Tooting and Mitcham Website announcing
"in principle" a three year ground share with AFCW.
As you know, Brentford FC have an option on Kingsmeadow which, if
taken up, would mean that we cannot continue there. Therefore, we have
no choice other than to explore all other options for where to play next
season.
Our discussions with T&M arose very recently, following an approach
from them. We have now reached the stage where we have agreed to
support an application to Merton Council for some planning matters that
require clearance before this option is possible. We had planned to issue a
joint press release on Monday night after a Dons Trust Board meeting.
We regret that we have not been able to announce the news in the way
we had planned.
Although this is a very attractive option for the club we have not made a
written commitment, except to support this planning application - there is
still a long way to go. The Dons Trust Board has been kept informed
throughout the negotiations, and we have made it very clear that any
arrangement we make, with T&M or any other club, is no substitute for
finding a permanent home. AFCW continues to work closely with the
Dons Trust and Merton Council, to achieve our goal of a permanent
home in Merton.
We will make no further comment before Monday night.

*** New Ground Share? *** - OK I got home this morning to find
that the following has been posted on Tooting & Mitchams site.
By now most club members should have received the following:
"The G.M.C. Of Tooting & Mitcham FC have accepted in principle a ground
share arrangement with AFC Wimbledon based on a three year period.
Members may well hear press speculation before receiving this information, however the decision was not taken until Monday 9th December. A meeting for further information will be held on Monday 6th January 2003 at 8pm in the bar." As soon as anything more is announced I will post details, but a lot of people were on the understanding that Tooting and Mitcham couldn't ground share. I understand that this was only for there first year at the new ground. |

13/12/2002 Harsh World Of Suspensions - If you thought the ban that Simon Bassey picked up and is currently serving of 35 days was very harsh well found out earlier in the Week about one of the Wallingford Players. The second Wallingford player who was sent off for head butting Danny Oakins has received a 16 (SIXTEEN) week ban. That ban starts in January and will see him miss most of the rest of the season. |

Bits And Bobs - In Saturday's Crystal Palace Vs Millwall Matchday
programme at Selhurst Park Tom Watts on BBC Radio London wrote a "What's
The Point" article that took up a full page in it he talks the whole
way through about AFC Wimbledon and saying that football is all about
the Soul of a football club and finishes it off with "Wimbledon
FC will take a useful football team north to Milton Keynes. The soul
of the club, though - as I'm sure they realise - they're going to
have to leave behind."
On Saturday night while in Chumleys someone noticed that the guys
over at the Flame Kebab House were now wearing AFC Wimbledon Shirts.
Any AFC Season ticket Holder who goes in there will receive a 10%
discount on the price. As a steward said on Saturday this is brilliant
and we should show the shop keepers of Wimbledon the value of The

A Roller Coaster Ride Against Chessington - A bitterly cold
day needed a battling performance from AFC to end up with the points
on Saturday. With Gavin Bolger away in Ireland Neil Robson returned
to the central of midfield. AFC attacked the West Bank in the first
half but right from the start Chessington pushed forward and they
won a corner in the second minute, the ball was played over and they
scored from a header at the near post.
Things looked like they were getting worse when from another corner Chessington went 2-0 up on 25 minutes. It looked like we were going to suffer our 3rd league defeat at Kingsmeaddow of the season. Although 2-0 down we tried to get into the game and the feeling was that if we could get a goal back by half time we would be in with a chance of getting something out of it.
At this time the bench was getting ready to make a change with Andrew
Petty warming up it wasn't clear at the time if it was tactical or
due to an injury but we soon saw Joe Sheerin replaced and it later
turned out that Joe had been having a problem all week and was on
medication so was a bit under the weather.
All of a sudden things looked brighter when Lee Sidwell managed to
slot home from close range the West Bank was well up for the fightback
and it wasn't long to wait for the leveling goal and this came from
Kevin Cooper. What looked like we would go in behind now was a case
that we were going to go in atleast level. The Dons surged forward
and Mark Nicholas scored his first AFC goal when he headed home and
the players surged into the West Back to celebrate with the delirious
fans. At half time the fans couldn't believe the change that had happened
in the final 20 minutes of the half.
Even though it was a freezing cold day the majority of the crowd (2,789)
left the relative warmth of the covered west bank to stand at the
uncovered athletics end of the ground so that we could be behind the
goal that AFC were attacking. The Dons felt that could wrap the game
up and continued to push forward but it didn't look like anything
was going to be converted. Then with about 15 minutes left Chessington
had a free kick and more slack marking saw them level the scores.
It looked like that after a brilliant fight back we were going to
throw away the hard earned points. With the crowd a bit despondent
the players seemed to go straight up the other end and Danny Oakins
played the ball for Cooper to convert from close range and put us
back in the lead at 4-3. This time we were not going to surrender
the lead and relief was all around as the final whistle went up.The Man Of The Match vote is now open so please click below to vote.

01/12/2002 Viking Sent Packing - This afternoon AFC Wimbledon took on Viking Greenford at Hayes FC. Viking had been on a bit of a run with a 4 points from there two previous league games and also being awarded 3 points from a game earlier in the season. The Dons started with Sheerin and Russell up front with Cooper on the bench along with the new boy Andrew Petty. First chance of the game fell to Viking when they rampaged forward and had a shot that hit the bar. The Dons were pushing forward but just didn't seem to be able to break the defensive back line of Viking. Then Andy Sullivan had a shot from the edge of the box that beat the keeper and squeezed in against the post to put us 1-0 up.At half time Joe Sheerin was replaced by Kevin Cooper speaking to Joe after the game he said that he had a bit of an injury after Wednesday game and didn't want to risk it getting worse so he came off. Shortly after Ali Russell was replaced by new boy Andrew Petty and almost with his first touch of the game he turned and shot past the Greenford keeper to give us a 2-0 lead. We were continuing to attack and had plenty of chances but the chances wouldn't convert. Kevin cooper finally got on the score sheet when he lobbed the keeper to put us 3-0 up. Just before this he had been in a brilliant move when Danny Oakins had run at the box before laying it to Cooper he tried to just faint it past the keeper but it just went wide of the goal. The game finished 4-0 when Petty got his second of the game when cooper had an effort cleared off the line but then came back to Cooper who squared it for Petty to slot home. Not the cricket score that everyone wanted but three points on the board and back to winning ways. The Man Of The Match poll is now open please click below to vote. |
