I am afraid I have certainly not given up on the play offs and though it may be better to have an extra season in this division there has been nothing to frighten us yet. We have generally not played that well but if Butler had not gone off against Staines we could well have won that game and likewise I am certain we would not have lost if the other Butler had not gone off against Hampton....and these were the two best teams! Where were Walton & H plus Bromley at this stage last year and equally Willdive 2000 were not even in the top two at this stage 3 years ago. No to be so lacking in optimism after a quarter of the season is not great. I think the club just know how far they have to push to get anywhere in this league and if it means the likes of Woolner, Smeltz etc. not putting in the sort of effort Howard, Finnie, Butler, Daley & Fowler did the other night, falling by the way side then so be it. I do hope the reduction in fan numbers is not a result of this general negative malaise or maybe they are just distraught Chelsea fans who cannot bear to return.

Paul if you view the table in 800 x 600 the menu down the left and the banners on the right remain the same but the table gets resized (i.e. smaller) so the names of the teams get truncated.

I see we've signed a new player; interesting he's chosen us over 2nd placed Staines. "Steve Cordery, manager of Ryman League Premier Division club Staines Town, was disappointed to lose attacking midfielder Dwayne Plummer this week as the former Bristol Rovers player, now aged 28, chose to further his hopes of a late return to the pro’ game by taking up an offer from AFC Wimbledon manager Dave Anderson.
Plummer, joined the Wheatsheaf Park club in the close season to make a re-connection with his former manager at Aylesbury United and having scored the Swans’ opening goal of what has been a very successful first quarter of the Ryman Premier Division campaign, he quickly became an influential member of the side. However, he bowed out in salubrious circumstances, picking up a broken nose as the Middlesex side exited the FA Cup at Folkestone at the weekend.
Now teaming up with ‘Dons’ manager Dave Anderson, who he played under briefly at Hendon, Plummer will be keen to help the south London side boost their chances of a promotion play-off place this season."

Richard B - I couldn't make the H&R game so I'd be very interested to know what you thought of it. Even the H&R report http://www.hamptonfc.com/Fixtures/20051011%20Wimbledon.htm makes it sound like we were unlucky.

Richard B- I think most people feel just a bit hard done by from Tuesday night. Good performance but we are in the results business. In our heart of hearts we all know we won't be getting playoffs but the battling the players are now doing is what we want. Anderson said when he first took over he had a three year plan to get us into the Conference South, and we are in the second year of this plan.

Dear TW, the problem occurs when you identify supporters' comments as being 'destructive'. Unfortunately , the nature of creating a successful football tema is that you have to do away with the bits that are not working and replace them with something better. Our failing this season (and close season) is that we have not done this as well as we should have done and some elemtns of the team are still (eg Woolner v Heybridge, though I don't want him to shoulder an unfair burden for this)failing to deliver, but the management is not dealing with the issue...probably because they have not put in place the alternatives. There could, of course, be many reasons for this, including the need to invest in Mr Khosla before we invest further in the squad, but as one who has seen a few games this season, it's undeniable. So it's less to do with the systems you refer to and more to do with the obvious lack of options, the sort of strength in depth that would cause opponents real problems. Having said all that, I gather the performance last night was much improved. Trouble was we lost and the teams that play badly and still win games are the ones that end up with trophies. Unless I am way off the mark, we're unlikely to make the play-offs at the present rate of progress. This league is OK and there have been some decent games this season, but the lack of strength in depth (look what happened when Richard Butler got injured) means we are going nowehere but mid-table right now.

I agree with the previous posts regarding Chelsea. Its good to get the casual support of others which benefits the club financially. It would be good to get behind the team with more pro dons songs rather than anti Chelsea and the pikey (yawn) taunts to opposition fans. It can be embarrasing when bringing friends to KM, in this case they were from Folkestone. The family moved around the ground in the end and asked do you treat every visitor to this throughout a game. Money lost I feel trying to persuade people to attend again. Nuff said on that, keep the faith Come on you Dons!

Big John: Where did I say that supporters must not express an opinion? Please, tell me as even I must I have missed reading, possibly writing, that post. All I asked for was some constructive messages instead of lots of very alike moans. It's no good keep saying this/that, is/was wrong. The question is, "What should be done to change the situation?" What team would you select, what formation would you use and how would you have the team play? Down the channels, in triangles, squeeze from the back or midfield. See what I'm trying to get at? Some constructive ideas from others who post on this site. We don't have to agreee with others opinions but they have every right to them and it would be nice to read them.

I understand Scott's post, he is obviously a young lad who supports a proffesional team but also is willing to help us. I would much rather sing anti-palace songs than chelsea. It's just chelsea are having the success, we all remember singing who the f**k are man united when they were ruling the league. Scott keep coming as we want all the fans we can get.

I have to say Scott that unfortunately that really is one of the most feeble posts I have read other than from an MK Fan. Any song against Chelsea is minimal and somewhat tongue in cheek as we will never meet them again. Perhaps we should ask if there are any fans in the ground from other teams so as to not upset anyone. I am struggling to know what to write next as I cannot believe you actually posted this! All these songs are surely water off a duck's back and goodness knows you have so much going for your club, until Roman leaves that is, that to go for any sympathy vote is really quite astonishing. I certainly would not suggest that you had anything in common with the Chelsea fans of the past but I am not sure they were the most friendly fans one could have met but certainly would have been amused as to how sensitive the modern fan is.

As a Chelsea fan who lives in the local area I try and get to a few AFC games a season with my AFC supporting friends. I know of quite a few other Chelsea fans who do the same and want to support the club and would love to see them grow. The thing that might well put us off is the anti Chelsea songs we have to endure at the games. We cannot really be seen as rivals until we are in the same league and this is a big dissapointment when I attend games. We get plenty of abuse from away fans at Chelsea games but that's all part of the game. I find it odd that there is such ill feeling to our club when there are plenty of us willing to put money into your club and have genuine support for everything you do.

A monumental performance last night on a par with Sutton last year. Had we not had the sending off we certainly would not have lost. Apart from teh cock up Howard was superb along with Finnie, Daley outstanding and Butler's running was just extraordinary. Always felt taking off Fowler was a bad idea as him and Butler had given their defence so much trouble. Would have been nice if Woolner had shown the same or indeed any interest. I agreed with Paul before the game that the crowd would be just over 1,000 so where did teh otehr 1,500 come from?! An extraordinary nightand presumably Sandy stayed for most of it.

I guess TW and one or two others must be right. Paying supporters have no right to express their views/become 'amateur managers'. We'll keep quiet whatever the quality of football then, whatever the nature of the performances. Only thing is, I thought that was what starstruck kiddies who go to the occasional Premiership game and McFrannnies who know no better and have freebie tickets forced on them, already do now. Wake up Dons! Oh yeah, before we get into any cheap jibes, I'm not at the game tonight because I arrived back in this country at 3.30am this morning and live a 200 mile round trip away from Hampton. Deal with the issues.

Anyone thinking of driving to tonights game should read the OS RE parking and traffic. Also there is this post on H&R's webboard "Can i please advise supporters to the ground early and NOT to bring their car to the roads around the ground as there will be traffic management in progress by Police and Traffic Wardens. We hope to have the top pitch available for those who need to travel by car, but the decision for this will not be made until Tuesday lunchtime, dependant to weather conditions Wherever possible public transport should be used, Hampton Station is only a short walk away, there will be club staff around the area to assist anyone who is lost!!!. 111, 216 & R68 buses all pass close by to the ground situated in Station Road, Hampton. Can i remind ALL that alcohol must not be brought into the ground the police may carry out checks. All the local shops have been informed and will be ID'ing all sales of alcohol to those who look 21 or under (new law) Changes to the ground: there are a couple if minor changes to the ground for this match, * The area in front of the bar is no standing (so you can't watch the match from here) it will be for queuing for refreshments only * We will be running two bars and 2 places for food * St John Ambulance will be on duty in the first aid post, not always in there normal position, there will also be an ambulance outside the ground Lets all hope for an enjoyable evening and what should be a grate match! People seem to forget that we have just been promoted.I think sixth place is excellent, considering we dont have Urse or Ammo.A draw against a club that contains full time players is a good result. I know 3 points would have been better but I dont think we need to panic quite yet.I do get a little annoyed when the players seem to not be trying but i guess its easy to judge from the terrrace.

Fair enough Richard. Matt York is another one that came with a big repuattaion but isn't really proving it. Finnie is not a right back, and certainly couldn't play wing back. We are still looking for a big centre mid who can win headers and sit in front of the back four. Sadly I think we have been looking for one of those since the club started.

Jake - Only position I have ever rated Woolner is almost as a sweeper. Finnie should play as right back, attacking or not...and York well I fear of the games I have seen he has been totally out of his depth. In terms of the boards. I only bring it up again because I asked in our first season what would happen and it is an area where very little has. I am afraid the name suggests why I cannot help in such things as it is all I can do to make the 200 mile round trip to each game....and yes I know some come from further etc.

Richard B, No I'm not the Club Secretary. In fact I have never seen AFC play. I'm an ex Wimbledon supporter now living miles away but do follow both this site and AFC with interest. Some of my postings may seem at odds with others but I just try to stimulate reasoned discussions. I enjoy reading this message board but sometimes many of the postings say the same things and I just like to open it out a little. Paul knows who I am and knows that I have the interest of the club at heart. Although I'm now near Ed Don we both know that our Wimbledon has gone and when we meet we talk of AFC but do look for the 'franchise' results so that we can laugh. We went to see "A Fans Club" at the Fringe and enjoyed it but would have loved to have been amongst people who new the real story. Several lines in the play pulled at the emotions and we would have loved to have joined in with the cast. Unfortunately the audience numbered only three more than the actors. Still a great play and I'm sure on other nights it played to a full house. Well written by a man whom I knew many years ago, (along with his brother), as a young lad selling programmes. So, please Richard don't get upset by by postings just join in the fun and talk about football forever.

TW, my last post may seem a bit strong but thought my original had been rejected. On the Field, considering the number of players that have been brought in I feel that the selection has clearly not been great as so many have now gone and really offered little. Many fans I think feel that the remnants of the previous management were always let go a bit too easily whereas people like Woolner & Randall got chance after chance. Last night the effort was excellent but teh right side was very weak and the team lacks a presence. Off the field I have nothing but admiration for all the work. I have in the past made a fuss about things i.e. the re publicising of the share offer and have gone on ad nauseum about so little advertising at the ground. I see it appeared in the programme again yesterday. We are almost the best supported non league club and yet we have the least boards around the ground. I mentioned this to Erik 2 and 3 years ago and the movement has been non existent I fear.

I am presuming that TW is the Club Secretary who only enters a message here whenever there might be any dissention from Supporters, and usually a cryptic one at that. Personally I find it amazing that the management team think that Micky Woolner is one of the best players in Non League football. Surely we can all put points across on the board and people can agree or disagree or is the 'orwellian' theme you are thinking of from 1984?!

TW: the reason why most of te comments are negative is simple really - the team isn't gelling and the manager seems to keep making strange decisions. For most of the season he's insisted on playing the long ball to forwards who lack height. It's obvious that isn't working to most of us fans, but DA doesn't seem to see it. That's why we're questionning - because we care!

T.W. - You seem surprised that fans should quibble with any of the management choices. Surely this has always happened in football and if there are some things fans cannot understand they are always going to bring them up. Amongst my queries are, as to why they stated Mickey Woolner was one of the best players in non league football. Other than he cannot pass and makes Seb Favata look lethal in front of goal a comment like this is so far of the mark, that of coure people are going to challenge it. Did Chester really, really want a look at him?!? Also standing behind the bench unfortunately gives a rathher sad insight. Very little suppport or helpful comments for the team except excessive swearing at the officials. I am certainly not saying they should go but for goodness don't be surpised that people should possibly challenge what they are doing.

I hate to say this, but there is something 'Orwellian" about the recent postings. At most matches the number of referees depends on the size of the crowd. Paul - The match facts indeed show 5 shots? Blimey...Great! Added to how many in the Walton game, etc?. Also the quality of the chances were not great. Apart from the header in the first half by Shane, I cant think of another real chance. The tip over in 2nd half by their keeper was never really going to threaten the net. As I said earlier, too, Heybridge were not great either so to state that they had less is not a great plus. I am pleased with the improvement from Walton but if we had lost, we would be very very worried.

Sorry Paul, but the reason I use the term 'got out of jail' is because we lose concentration too easily at the back and could esaily have lost as a result. You don't need me to run down the list of daft goals given away this season. Akurang took his goal well, but Butler and Howard were embarrassed in a way that has been all too frequent this season. No need to panic Mr Mainwaring, but let's learn from our mistakes, eh? And the first thing we have to do is own up to them.

Things were better yesterday but we need to remember Heybridge were not as good as Walton too. I think, if we hadnt had got the last ditch draw many people would be calling for drastic changes. Apart from the last 5/10 minutes we didnt really threaten the goal. As for changes, I hate the 3 centre back system and always feel that a 442 suits us better. The midfield probably is our biggest problem as it doesnt create enough. Our subs bench too looks remarkably thin. We have needed someone who we could throw on to give us another dimension such as Leon, Ginger or Sheerin. I still expect DA to sign new players as soon as he finds the right men

Jonno is absolutely right. I posted here, this time last week, in support of Anderson's approach and what does he actually do? Effectively, nothing at all. Worse than that, he kept Woolner in a position where he singularly failed to perform all the time he was and fit and even left him on for about 15 minutes when he was injured. His contribution was negligible as a result. I continue to support the management team, but their decision-making sometimes has less to do with any strategy than acting like a rabbit in the headlights. We got out of jail yesterday and we shouldn't forget it.

Sandy, Cooper was phenomenal against W&H second half winning every header getting hight and distance as a centre back should, Finnie I like a lot and will be a player for us but the 3rd goal came when he headed a ball against one of their players, a little unlucky but if he headed clear like Cooper luck wouldn't come into it.

Just a further comment on this rubbish about good money and entertainment. I presume that if we had been leading 2-0 through mistakes from Wimbledon rather than W&H then you would have definitely left at half time. In addition I presume you left very early at Molesey away, Whyteleafe & Bashley at home last and away to Westfield the previous one. All far worse games but we were top at the time so probably not!

Interesting comments from Frankie: "Some fans expect Premiership football in the Ryman League, but we are semi-pro players and don't get paid as much as people think. Everyone thinks we are big-time Charlies on big wages, but we are not. AFC Wimbledon are a midtable side in terms of players' pay.
The club is not throwing money about like other teams in this division and the players who are here could play elsewhere for more cash.
They really want to play for this football club. "

Sandy, hardly surprising as you made such a thing about leaving at half time. There is no point saying the players can't be bothered when you go off half way through. To me the first part of teh saeson has been almost identical in the League to last year. A great first game and pretty disappointing afterwards. The difference is we were Top all last season and from what people are saying a relegation threatened 4th this.

Richard like the 2ft 6 :-) As for Sonny Farr I get the impression he's much the same size as Rob Ursell. If we are to get the best out of both of these guys, we must start playing the game on the ground. When Sonny came on against W&H I couldn't count the number of times he had to jump agains a player a foot taller than him. DA has to change the style, we have the players and ground play will beat most big teams.
Tomato Swig (tom@todee.fsnet.co.uk)

Swig, I agree with the Harvey full back idea but cannot help but feel that Farr was probably an outstanding Schoolboy player who unfortunately has not grown physically much over the last couple of years and thus why he looks like a boy playing against men.
Although I was some way away from the free kick I was watching avidly as we made sure we had no one over 2 ft. 6 in the wall, and I thought the shot cleared everyone by quite away.

Don Wom, Andy Little set the wall up and positioned himself correctly. Then the W&H no.10 who was in front of Mark Cooper moved across the wall and Cooper followed him. This left a gap in the wall through which the ball was slotted. So down to Mark Cooper I reckon. Having said that Little didn't do much to help Cooper who was obviously overstretching for the ball on the first goal ... that was definitely a keeper's hoof.

Regarding Harvey, it would be good if he could become a good team/squad member and make himself available full time instead of the when it can be fitted in that has been reported. He is a talented player and has much to offer. To be honest on Saturday at 2-0 down I'd have replaced Dave Sargent with Sonny Farr and drop Harvey back to play as an attacking full back. No reflection on Sarge who was trying hard as he always does but it was a cup-tie, we were 2 down and Harvey / Farr would have given us more potent attacking options to try and claw the game back. To that end I wonder about DA's tactical awareness at this level of football.

Jase I haven't watched the highlights but I'm willing to bet that if you watch again asking yourself "would a bigger, stronger Dons player have done better" the answer nearly every time would be no. The truth is W&H were quicker to everything and positive in everything they did. W&H weren't a Thurrock out-muscleing us, they were just better on the day.

I sometimes wonder why defending teams bother with a wall, especially when the free-kick is well outside the box. I well remember taking shots against a good class goalie from outside the box. It was not easy to score. There are of course some really good ball strikers who would score on a reasonable % times, but IMO the wall sometimes does more harm than good. Pretty sure Little would have at least dived the right way if there were no wall on Saturday, but he was rooted to the spot. Let's face it a number of penalties are not scored from 12 yards when the goalie is supposed to stay on the line! Anyone else wonder?

I agree the staines one is interesting, cause we should have won the game as they weren't better than us and proves the standard is not that great. Teams are more physical in this league but it has been far from a huge leap in standard as us and W & H are showing by both doing ok in the league.

Richard B. I take your point about the W&H attack. Staines is interesting in retrospect, a lot of fans were disappointed with our draw but look at where they are now. BTW just to set the record straight the 1st goal was down to a weak header back from Cooper and the second Sargent backed off instead of clearing the ball.
Rick
- Monday, September 26, 2005 at 04:39:14 (PDT)
I say teh W & H attack is non existent in that they have managed 8 goals in 8 games this season. The first was a goalkeeping gift of Naisbitt proportions, The second was Woolner asleep on teh edge of teh box, and not that it mattered we made sure we had the smallest wall in history. The third goal was a great shot but with acres of space. I was really stressing that to me teh Staines & Worthing attacks caused many problems and felt really the Swans did not without our help.
Richard B another Wiltshire Don
- Monday, September 26, 2005 at 04:10:46 (PDT)
"W & H attack was non existent" - 3 goals + 2 good saves from Little suggests this is a harsh judgement. However I would say that I don't think Dons fans would be happy if we were successful playing like W&H. W&H would appear to have a style that is very basic but one they do very, very well. Put it this way if AFCW play at 100% of our potential and W&H played at 100% of their potential we'd win 4 times out of 5. The problem we have, or rather DA has, is to get the best out of our team.
Rick

Managers' responses to performances like Saturday's are often instructive. It's encouraging to see on the Offical site that Anderson is not making excuses and plans to make changes. It will be interesting to see how these work, but I fear the squad doesn't have the strength in depth at this level to make the necessary changes work. It's not just a change in personnel that is needed, but to adapt our game plan according to circumstances. There was little creativity in midfield on Saturday, so we just kept lumping the ball in the general direction of Butler - a tactic much appreciated by the massive Walton defence. Having said all that, our best chance of staying in the top half (let alone top five) this season is to stop giving away stupid goals. It's been embarrassing, or at least it should be for the players concerned. Playing badly and picking up points may not be the beautiful game, but is likely to be the least worst option for the time being, at least until Ursell returns.

On the bad side, agree whingeing supporters and people who walk out at half time is really annoying...we are not Chelsea and will not win every game. On the plus side I thought we were pretty dull last season, people thought many of the other teams would be far better and we were top for the entire season. We are not great but should not presume the other teams are. W & H attack was non existent, Staines were completely knackered after an hour, so for goodness sake don't give up on them....As for the excuse for Harvey, well if he was not fit he should not have played and if he was finding his feet at this level what was he doing at Lewes in teh Conf. Sth. I think the management team leaves a lot to be desired but support is what's needed and a hint of patience.

While I was far from happy with Saturday's performance there are 2 things that annoy me even more 1) whinging wombles (levels of moaning previously only associated with Spurz supporters), 2) ungracious in defeat, no one has given W&H credit for a magnificent performance full of spirit and hardwork.

True. It's not all doom and gloom. Yes a few home truths may have been highlighted these past few weeks. Personally I would be suprised if we get in the top 8. The position we are in now should be taken advantage of and Dave should sign 3 or 4 big, tall and fast players that can mix it up a bit. Look at W&H they had players like no.7 who could run at us, was reasonable in the air and on the ground and looked dangerous. We have a number of players scared to take people on and prefer to turn back into trouble!Harvey is still finding his fitness/ feet so give him time. First half against a weak Redbridge side he was good. 2nd half he tired. He will come good. Come on let's try to be positive and support the team as we ain't out of it...yet!

Worst display of the season(so far), Mr. Harvey wasn't interested as appropriately quoted in earlier posts and to single him out is a little unfair (only in my opinion) as the rest of the team were also similarly of the same attitude, (Nothing changed after his substitution) except for R.Butler who worked his socks off with no support. D.A. must drop(the dead donkeys) the hangers on and play people who have pride in wearing the blue of Wimbledon. It is easy to be dissallusioned and down beat watching this type of performance, but getting behind the team and showing others, who at present are taking great delight in laughing at our message boards with suggestions of the manager walking and open critisism towards the individuals mentioned are not helping our cause. ( I am possibly contradicting previous sentences.) I know it is difficult to be positive with so many negatives on the pitch, but we are sometimes I think over expectant and the pressure transfers to the players and management. Enough of the negatives and a concerted effort from all quarters will hopefully lift everyone. COME ON YOU DONS. Also to this end we were beaten by a much better team on the day and credit where credit is due. Well done the swans, even if their school boy (supporters) humour was a little hard to swallow.

Paul I see you're not defending the team so much this time, maybe you're starting to believe that the team and manager are not good enough. It will not be nice to see the new stand (when it finally opens)half empty, that's the way it looks at the moment. The gates are going to get smaller, so the money to pay for the ground, and the new stand will be less,as I said before you have a good team more [people will come to see. Think of how much money we lost for not going a little bit further on the FA cup and this is only the start as with the team we have we will not go very far in any competicion.

If the crowds drift away because we are not romping away with teh League then is it a very poor reflection on our fans. If Sandy if an example of a fan and leaves at half time then I have to say they are the sort of fans no club needs.
Having said that we were pathetic. We have out two most creative players injured but if we are going to play with two wide men why did we spend the whole game humping it up through the middle? Why was Harvey totally uninterested in the game and worse still why when things are going wrong do the management bench have nothing to say. Their comments are usually restricted to criticising the officials and they have no constructive comments whatsoever to help the team.
I am very surprised by the talk of keep all teh same players as last year. I thought we were particularly boring last year and the midfield had not one creative player in it except for RU. At least Moore has a bit more about him. I finf the management very uninspiring but still let us not forget we are still 4th not 14th!

Why can't the players see things the supporters feel are obvious? W&H had a goalie who could command in the air, yet we still put every kick and throw as high as possible into the box - he just took sweets out of the jar time and time again. Why not a square ground ball, and shot through the crowd ? Mind you on yesterday's performance that would have gone into the crowd (or empty stand)Yes we want changes, but probably not the ones DA is thinking about ! Agree the commitment is not there, and the ability certainly isn't. What was all the fuss about Harvey coming 'home', hasn't had a good touch since he's played. Lucky Lewes.
