Help save Hendon FC. Their future is looking very, very dodgy unless their move from their current Claremont Road ground to the Copthall stadium goes through. Key to this is permission to build on the Claremont Road site, without which the whole scheme will fall through. An online petition to support this is available at http://www.petitiononline.com/SaveHFC/petition.html Cheers

Just picking up on Paul's comment about Cloughie. He really was one of the best. My favourite memory of him will always be from the football league centenary tournament at Wembley in '88. I was 12 and asked him to sign my programme. He not only did that but took me and introduced me to his whole team and made sure that all of them signed. And yes, of course he called me "young man"! I know he was retired, but his insight will be a sad loss to the game.

My grandfather first took me to a Wimbledon home game at Plough Lane just over forty years ago. I can remember watching the supporter’s train from Folkston having to pull into Haydons Road Station twice because the train was to long for the station. It was a sad day when the club moved away from Plough Lane.

My favoutite FA Cup memory was while we were having a pre-match beer near Baker St. 2 posh old dears came around the corner and the conversation went a bit like this "I say Dorothy who are all these people and what are they doing here?" Dorothy's reply was "Don't you know dear, its the FA Cup today and I believe these are supporters of Wimbledon" Dorothy then said "Who are Wimbledon playing?" and the repliy was "Oh some team from up north I believe". And yes this did happen and I cracked up especially as one of my mates going to the game with me was a red.

Favourite 88 Cup Memory is from the Friday beforehand. The lady who looked after the players with tea and toast before home matches made a special meat pie. This pie, complete with a pastry FA Cup on top was being cut up and eaten by the players before they left for the overnight hotel. At the same time the TV camera crews turned up for interviews. Dave Beasant refused to put his piece of pie down as was interviewed still eating and he told the TV person that the pie was the secret weapon which would help them win. And by fate he was holding the pie in the same hand that turned away the penalty. Coincidence or something far stranger than fact!!!!?

No tetchy at all :) Don't know where you got that idea from. Just posting the facts to quell some of these rumours about our crowds. And yes, it is quite bizarre. As for our away following, I think you slightly over-estimate it and under-estimate the one-off big game attraction to the locals when we come to town. We still must have one of the largest percentages of away support compared to home gates in any league (30-40%). Personally I can't see it continuing at the same level as the games get further away as we (hopefully) climb the leagues.

Richard it not all seat ticket holders who dont turn up, but we do get a number of enquiry in the office about the seat was empty near me can i buy it, when it belongs to a season ticket holder. I think it shows how good our away support is. I remember on our last trip to wolves hering that they have somethink like 3,000 season ticket holders who dont turn up for some game, ok a lot lower % but some people by tickets just for a few games a season, we should be greatful for these people as with all season ticket holders.
Paul Raymond (webmaster@itmustbedons.com)
Tooting, London England - Thursday, September 09, 2004 at 05:22:46 (PDT)
Martin D, you sound a bit tetchy on the subject but you have to realise for the average avid fan the fact 500 or so people buy tickets and never turn up is bizarre. If they all bought Stand tickets would that mean it would be empty every week? Also if a midweek attendance is 2,500, only 2,000 fans actually go and yet we can take 1,500 to Horsham are we saying that 3/4 of the home fans would make a trip to Sussex? If that is the case we seem to have a lot of people who go home & away and a good number of 'fans' who never go at all. A strange mix and I think hence the surprise amongst most fans.

I reckon there are probably about 300 season ticket holder that just buy them to support the club financially but can't attend for various reasons.
jakedon11
- Thursday, September 09, 2004 at 03:45:19 (PDT)
As someone who counted the ST holder tickets at the opening Ashford Town game (1098 ST tickets I seem to remember) I can assure you that somewhere between 400 and 600 ST holders DON'T use their tickets at a league game. It really is as simple as that :)
Martin D
- Wednesday, September 08, 2004 at 05:57:41 (PDT)
Yes, but were those two crowds even over 4,000? How many season ticket holders actually failed to turn up to those matches? As a consequence, how many were locked out of the Chipstead game, unnecessarily? I had thought the restriction placed on the capacity by the safety certificate was too stringent, but had we had another 2,000 in the ground on Saturday it would have been really tight. I must agree that 500 regular no-showers seems too high a percentage, but at least it's not Winkelmanesque.

Richard B another Wiltshire Don

Richard because we have in the region of 500 season ticket holders who have been missing / dont turn up for games but want a season ticket anyway. They counted for the league game but not the cup game. So in effect although the crowd was lower for the cup game more people watched the game.
Paul Raymond (webmaster@itmustbedons.com)

Andy - Over 1500 sold now. - Ted I think Dave Towse being in the reserves is brilliant He's a player we know can do a job and secondly his experience can help the younger players.

I thought Leslie Crowther was excellent too but what has happened to Phillo? Was it just a one off game he missed or will he not be doing the PA anymore? Someone please put me out of my misery!

Can any explain why Dave Towse is still turning out for the reserves? No disrespect intend in case you read this Dave, it just seems strange to have someone taking up a slot who seemingly has no prospect of being in the first team squad, or perhaps I am missing something and he is captain or a coach in which case jolly good. I was most impressed with the gentleman on the P.A. at Kingsmeadow last night. I don't know he he is but I hope he is doing the job on a permanent basis. It's a pleasure to hear English spoken properly, there were many amused comments from the crowd but I thought his delivery was splendid. Oh, and the team did well too!

Regarding collection pots, can i remind you that the Golden Goal sellers can always take collection of money into the buckers they have it may be worth having a day where people bring in coppers (Should I suggest the met police game) but I dont think it's as simple as having a jar at the end of the bar.

The Sainsburys coin machines are done IIRC by a company called Coinstar, who will take a percentage of any donation put into their machines. If they can guarantee regular amounts being put in, then it could be a worthwhile project...

Agree its a great idea..most people have a jar for coins.I have a big whiskey bottle which i usually bag up and change to "real" money every xmas, usually over &150 in there evry yr.More than happy to tip this into a collection at KM. Maybe we could come to an arrangement with Sainsburys to convert it using thier counting machines on a regular basis?

I think Chris 99 on www made a great comment about a small but valuable fund raising move. In the bar at KM and maybe in and outside the ground, we should have some pots for unwanted change. I dont know about you but I have alot of 1ps and 2ps which quite frankly I dont like. Counted up and they come to a couple of pound. If everyone threw that in we would have £6000 to pay off a little bit of debt. Clearly this could be on going to. I know its a little but everything helps.

Presumably not Andy Sullivan we are talking about. I would love to say what a great asset he would be but fear he has always been totally overated and I find it ironical that he is still at the club and yet we lose Cooper and Oakins. AS always seemed to get ridiculous numbers of MOTM votes and yet performances like the Cup Final and Chessington & Hook away were far too frequent for my liking.

Sully is a rarity in football these days. He can play with both feet and is willing (and able) to take players on. Once he gets a foothold in the side he'll be hard to shift.

Wandering a bit off topic has anybody been following developements at Rushden and Diamonds? Ernie Tippett installed as manager (I missed that, but I am out of the country), Messrs Hawkins and Gier join from Franchise, Hawkins goes back to Franchise on loan and Lee Worgan turns out for R+D in a friendly. What next? Ground share at Nene Park?, RDMK Dons? Of course you would expect Stuart and Ernie to help each other out..... Anyway I am taking up a new allegiance to R+D on the grounds that Ernie is there, and as the geographical (I think) nearest rivals to Franchise. rgds Ted
