Paul, my first visit + posting on your website and guestbook - its very good. Just a quick comment re the Vase game Saturday. I think we are in for a tough old game, as Herne Bay are now 2nd in their league, having won 5, drawn 1 and lost 0 so far this season. I still think we will win, but its going to be a nailbiter!!!

Scottish refs are still sponsored by Specsavers - I think it's a 3 year deal? At least it shows someone at the SFA has a sense of humour unlike the muppets that run the game south of the border.

Richard - main point of advertising is big potential viewing and main chance is via any TV exposure. and the TV cameras are based in the main stand so when we are on TV this will be seen. before the days of saturation tv coverage and the old one fixed camera clubs always used to advertise TV side board and a cost they were always the first to go.

Tooting, London England - Monday, October 06, 2003 at 08:17:06 (PDT)
Paul - Always from the now John Smiths stand so have not noticed these. Having looked at the other 3 sides I would say there are probably 3 maybe 4 new boards. As each game goes by we lose sponsorship money. I would be very surpsrised if anyone was pleased with 10-12 boards after 7 League Games. It is difficult to criticise as there is so much volutary work but feel many wavering supporters & netrals need to see progress to keep them interested. After all attendances are down by 10% this season.
Richard B another Wiltshire Don
- Monday, October 06, 2003 at 04:29:58 (PDT)
Richard can I ask where you watch the game from? the reason being is that the John Smiths stand has a number of new signs, Coke, Thompson Local, AFC Wimbledon.co.uk, JVC and many others that I cant think of at the moment. regarding the kingstonians one it's there ground as well and they have to have some signs up.
Paul Raymond (webmaster@itmustbedons.com)
Tooting, London England - Monday, October 06, 2003 at 01:25:41 (PDT)
Paul - I have to say, as I have said before, that the lack of Perimeter Ads is very worrying. To me very little has happened, with perhaps 3 being added despite exposure to 2,500+ every game. We have now played nearly 1/3 of our home games and it does look pretty pathetic. Better to sell them cheap rather have none at all. I appreciate this is nothing to do with you but no one else at the club comes up with a satisfatory answer. Many supporters are confused as to why there is huge Kingstonian.com in prime place on the half way line, under the Kingstonian FC sign and nothing for us.
The advance on the pitch has been fantastic and full marks to all involved. I am not alone in thinking that off the pitch the commercial side is lagging behind. I wrote three weeks ago but with no response. We know the interest is £9,000 at a time but unless I am missing the point it has all gone quiet on many fronts.

WISA has now launched its write-in campaign to persuade John Prescott (the deputy Prime Minister) to call in the MK planning application for a 30,000 seat stadium. Details are on the WISA web site, under football chat. Look for the post marked IMPORTANT, dated October 3rd. Please download the letter, put your name and address in the top right hand corner, sign it, and send it off. If a few hundred letters to this effect land on his desk we hope he will call in the application, thus adding 12-18 months to the applicants' time scale. Maybe that will finally pull the plug on the whole project. So, if you want to get back at the MK stadium consortium, here's your chance.

The advertising boards round the ground seem to be adding more to each game. The thing to remember is that it was late in the close season that we "exchanged" contracts and therefore became owners of the ground and it was only then that we could try and get sponsors in. Regarding match tickets, do you ever travel by bus have you ever read an advert on the back of a bus ticket, ever used it? Season Ticket books were all printed before this was done and therefore about 50% of the fanbase may not see the adds. The programme give details of the sponsorship possibilities and if people contact the club with what they can do if it is fessible and of benefit to the club they may come to an agreement.

Paul - why is there hardly any advertising boards around the ground? Also - do you think give our club sponsor enough coverage? I certainly do NOT think so! Come on give them something back in return. Take the match tickets why do we not allow a sponsor to make them? The sponsor would then pay for the production and could offer discounts / prizes etc for utilising their goods/ products/ services. For example, 'Hot steamy massages' receive 10% discount on a full massage!! :)

Just checking over my pre-season predictions and it looks as though I'm going to be way off the running by the end of the season. Although I've Wimbledon down for winning nearly everything it's usually by a margin of one, two or maybe three goals. How could anyone predict we'd start off on three goal wins, work our way up to four, nip up to six goals and then top seven? Am I right to feel guilty for underestimating the mighty dons? Where will it stop?? I suspect the deciding points will start coming from predicting the correct number of opponent's goals at this rate or will the rigors of winter and waterlogged pitches drag some of the scores back to reality? Anyway, prediction table or not it's still nice watching them go in.....

Good to see the real Dons thrive and pack out non-league grounds on awaydays. Takes me back to those three unforgettable seasons 1975-78 when we were the 'Man United of the Southern League'. I now live in West Wales, in part due to a wish to be away from the world of franchise football.
How can Franchise FC be called the MK Dons? There is no 'don' in either Milton or Keynes. I think they ought to be called the MK Friedmans after the free market guru, they are certainly more Friedman and Keyenesyan. Good to hear that the MKF versus Burnley (FA Cup 3rd Round 1976, that truly was the best afternoon to be watching the Dons save for Wembley '88 - Dicky Guy was a God in gloves) was a flop. Great article in the Observer about it. My guess is that in four years time, the Dons will leapfrog MFK after two two sublime games in the Conference when the MKF 'fans' (franchisees?) finally crawl away in shame.
Cheers, David.

It’s been a funny week, my blood has boiled at the Franchise spin that has been going around and by the way BBC 3C’s web site has been advertising the game etc. It has bought back all the feelings of hurt etc that I thought I had put behind me. But then Saturday afternoon came and we kicked off, I couldn’t unfortunately make the game but I was stuck to the PC readings Paul’s updates and the comments on W&WW and it made me realise even more what a great club we have here. However, as an English teacher I just can't let this pass as I notice it in every report of yours that I read. It is not could OF, should OF or would OF. It is could HAVE, should HAVE and would HAVE. An example being "He should have scored". Sorry to be pedantic - I think your site is brill.

M.O.T.M : Forget the blindingly obvious (Cooper hat trick)Just what more has Gavin Bolger got to do to get acclaim ?
He is the teams pulse and is THE real presence in our midfield. He gives 100% in every match and never less so than last night. What a mouth-watering prospect of the blinding midfield pairing of Gavin and 'Ginge' (on his return from injury).
By the way, if Terry runs short of central defenders he could do worse than considering Ali Russell for the role.
The way he (skillfully?) deflected TWO of our certain goal-bound shots to safety was undescribable!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
He turns on the ball like the the Queen Mary in Southampton water and has a deftness of first-time touch like a JCB.
I thought his replacement (Luffman) looked very lively and 'up for it' when he came on and looks a good prospect.

On BBC Sport website the franchise are not going to refund their legions of new fans (as originally promised) for the games played at Selhurst. So, at least the people in MK get to see what lying, cheating w****rs they have welcomed into their midst. They are also apparently charging the 2nd most expensive admission fee in Div 1 and Winkleman is saying it's all for the club's good. It won't be when no-one pays it! So now it's obvious that he is just as gormless as koppell. Did anyone notice the slip on Skysports news when the caption of "MK Dons Chairman" appeared under Winkleman's ugly mug while he was spouting crap? 1) MK Dons? I thought the name was still "Wimbledon FC", and it was still "the same club" 2) Chairman? Bringing them out of administration is he? The words "Carve up" spring to mind. Go into administration , clear a few debts on the cheap......how anyone can have anything to do with the scum is beyond me.

So, the franchise finally get the go-ahead to play at the NHS. There were rumours that Winkleman was deliberately stalling so that the first game was against West Ham and got a 'big' crowd rather than Burnley, but apparently the administrators turned the screw and jollied them on. So, at last they'll be gone. Hopefully it won't be long before they stop pretending to be Wimbledon and drop the name. Lets also hope that fans of other teams see this travesty of a club for what it is and dont darken the door, although the anoraks will probably see it as a 'new ground' to visit, but we can hope.

I think that supporters that throw thing at the other goal
keeper is very irresponsible do they know what the trouble it can cause i think the person or people involved should
grow up and learn to behave and respect the club and the apposing team after all how would you feel if someone was doing it to us.

Greg - Thanks for the comments. Regarding Withdean although we are a feeder league for the Rymans teams still have to be elected and meet certian criteria the main one is having own ground or ground share for a minimum of 3 years. Withdean play at Worthing's ground (and brighton play at Withdean stadium where withdean used to play) but only have 2 years left on the groundshare. This season Withdean's chairman left and joined Worthing and took half the players with him thats why they have not done very well at the start of the season. Hope that helps.

Was a Dons fan for years and travelled over to Plough Lane to watch the odd match. I'm now enjoying following AFC on the web and love the site! Big question though, how come Withdean2000 are still in CCL, why were they not promoted. I'm a little confused about promotion from the CCL, anyone willing to provide me with a quick crash course!

Interesting that Seb Favata's nickname from the players is Marco Tardelli as he is nothing like him. Tardelli was an incredibly hard player who represented everything that was bad about Italian football in the late 70s along with Bennetti, Gentile etc. He is more of a busy bee in midfield and would rather see him as an Archie Gemmill or Gordon Strachan. Unless of course anyone has any better ideas?

Paul - totally agree with your sentiments and it has to stop - Tuesday night was not the first incident and it won't be the last. I think the warning about loss of points/fines/stands being closed etc needs to be in the programme and needs to be announced over the p/a a couple of times a game. There is a large community of dons on the net, I would estimate around 400 odd? therefore this message needs to be in the faces of every "fan" at every game as it could have a real detrimental effect on our club

Paul - Totally agree with your comments concerning the coin throwing etc. It still surprises me how there always seems to be one opposition player in most games who tries to rile the supporters. I remember the Chessington Utd. No. 10 and I think the Cobham number 9 last year as well as Hancock of Wallingford, plus the whole Ash team away, Wontbother 2000 and Southall. I fear I lost any sympathy with the keeper after his pathetic time wasting at the penalty and complaining about Cooper when clearly fouled. But must stress the 'banter' must never go TOO far.

Fans from other clubs at KM: I picked up on a Big Tissue thread about fans wearing colours who've been down to KM, and I've started a thread on WISA Chat/Football Chat. I'm interested in real fans from other clubs rather than 'shirt-wearers' IYSWIM. The list so far is: Arsenal, Barrow, Bath, Bradford City, Brentford, Brighton, Bristol Rovers, Burnley, Charlton, Chester City, Cork City, Excelsior, Fulham, Gillingham, Halifax, Kingstonian, Manchester City, Manchester United, Millwall, Newcastle, Norwich, Orient, Preston, St Pauli, Southend, Stoke, Sunderland, Tottenham, Wolves, Worcester City, Wycombe, Yeovil. If you have made any other sightings please let me know (on here or email me).

AAARGH! Third from bottom of the league...never mind, most of the errant predictions were the fault of Son (I can safely blame him as he's been in bed for an hour or two). As soon as my own expert predictions kick in I'm confident of charging up the table and avoiding that 'Viking Greenford' feeling (actually feeling a bit 'Cove-ish' at present).

Woo hoo, check out that leapfroging in the table. Paul, reckon you should put those on equal points in alphabetical order - that put me 3rd!! Oh and yes that just proves that I don't go to AFC merely to drool over the players (ok so it helps that they are all so lovely ;-))
