Paul - thanks for letting us know the words to the "Terry Eames is Magic" song. Ken told me what he thought the words were and he was slightly wrong! He thought it was "and when we formed AFC..." and "he swears when we're winning, he swears when we're shite"! Not a lot different to the true words, I suppose, but if we choose to sing it along with everyone else, it'd be a good idea to sing the same words! Thanks for that! Tel's got a good sense of humour too - when the crowd started singing it at one point, Terry - who was in front of us - looked up at everyone with a smile on his face and said something like "don't start singing that - I'm not wearing a hat!" Magic!

Dont know if this is true and I apologise if this has already been talked about. Remember Small-King from Wallingford? According to my brother, he has been "sacked" from the Wallies because he played for a Sunday team when he should not have. If this is true, he could be a good target!

Whether you like it or not, swearing is part and parcel of football. It always has been and always will be. However, when I heard the champaign song for the first time, I remember thinking "thats poor". It just did not seem funny. The other chant which I hated was "Nigel, Nigel" for Winterburn! Thought we should have got a better one for him all those years ago!
What about chants we like. I used to like "Harry Bassetts drunk and disorderlies" and Bobby Gould's "big bushey eyebrows". Much more witty. Liked the song that goes on for ages that Celtic sing too - has the line "and if you know your history", etc. We dont sing that much now. The anti MK song at the moment I enjoy too!

The words to the Terry Eames is magic song is as follows - Terry Eames is magic he wears a magic hat, and when we started AFC he said I'm having that, he swears wwhen we are average, he swears when we are (not very good), and when we win the CCL he'll swear all through the night. - I am sure you can work out I have changed a few of the words.

Richard - about the O/S Marc Jones who does the official site moved house two weeks ago he was promised tele worst connection on the day he moved in but got it this Monday. This week he has been doing crazily doing Y&B as well as trying to earn some money from his own self employed job. Regarding no-updates Marc went into the AFC offices every day last week (including good Friday)to make sure the site was updated including parking information for the rpv game that raised £500 for the stadium fund. The only things missing from the o/s are two match reports (this weekends) a match reaction. and to update some of the player profiles. People have to realise the difference between an official and unofficial site in theory I can say what I like the club could come to me and say we dont like that but what goes on the o/s has to be 100% accurate or the club could get in big trouble. Marc does a brilliant job and people should realise he is one of the many unpaid people at AFCW.

Paul, You know everything about everything. What has happened to the Official site? It has not been updated for a week and seemingly for the last couple of months the information has been very disappointing. This puts extra pressure on you are yours is the only fully up to date site. The Official site looks very sad and surely not how the club should be portraying itself. I have tried to contact them but without any luck.

Also a steward for AFC, - Thursday, April 24, 2003 at 05:00:00 (PDT)
As a volunteer steward for AFCW, I would like to point out that there is FAR worse language and much more graphic insults used on a regular basis at KM than those contained within the "unfunny" lyrics of the Champaigne Song. There will never be an agreement on whether it is appropriate or funny as it is very much ironical (how many people who sing it actually snort cocaine FFS) - much like much of Eminem's material - and you either recognise that or take offence. But rather than get too hung up about it, please help us by pointing out those who spout really offensive garbage so that we can start to clean up our act. On a side note, I would also like to mention that I hear far more swearing and (particularly) homophobic comments coming from kids and young teenagers than from any adult in our crowd - make of that what you will.
Chalfont Don
- Thursday, April 24, 2003 at 04:23:29 (PDT)
Re kids and swearing. With 2 kids myself age 2 and 4 and yet to make their first kingsmeadow visit I suppose I worry about bad language.Coming back from Selhurst a few years ago by train to London Bridge, the Millwall poured out and onto our carriage, singing as loud as possible. It went quiet after a while until this huge bloke egged on his 2 kids age around 5-6 to sing. The time honoured lament burst forth. 'My old man said be a West Ham fan, I said F***off, B*llox you're a c**t'. AND this coming from kids so young. Naturally I told him what I thought of his behaviour.....well, perhaps I didn't and actually laughed in disbelief at what I'd just heard. I'm not suggesting we are similar to Millwalls hardcore support but it is a problem. Perhaps a family enclosure, complete with ear muffs?. Or are we just being too precious.
(Apologies Paul for bleeped language)

I swear, I try to make as much noise and give as much support as I can. I personally feel that the atmosphere is quite as great as people make out except when there is a roof i.e. at Woking. I would not expect to tell anyone to stop singing, I am not trying to convince you I am right you are wrong, but just feel that it is a very negative song that personally I could do without. Sing it if you want but if like me you come away all without a voice left after a game at least you could have done it with more direct support for the team. In the end I would rather any noise rather than some of the funerals we have played at away from home this season...and as for away to Coventry a few years ago I have never st with so many people who were so unanimated.

OK, so because you don't like the song or think it is amusing, other people have to share your view? Anything else you would like 3,000 people to agree with you on? What do you suggest we do? Ban people from singing it? Anyone care to say how this would be enforced? What a load of nonsense. If you don't like it, say something to people or move somewhere else in the ground.

The thing is, everyone swears and you're not going to be able to stop anyone doing it, theres 3,000 or so people there, the massive vocal support given to the Dons is making them play better and the other teams can't handle it, if we got rid of this song we would have to get rid of every little song with a swear word in it, including my favourite, Terry Eames is magic. Plus I think the song's quality, and it's not like it's new though anyway, it's always been sung, I remember it being around from before.

This song. Have'nt seen so much debate about anything on this site before. It is not the offense it causes but that some people actually think it is amusing and it is patently NOT, it not not add support for the team as it is a rambling mumble of a song and has the style of Millwall and Chelsea all over it.

So let's get this straight. People want other people to stop singing a song they don't like and post their complaints on an internet guestbook? Perhaps actually asking the people at the game to stop it would be a better idea? Or perhaps try moving to another part of the ground to protect their tender ears and those of their terribly impressionably children? And I bet any money that all the people moaning about it hardly make a sound at matches. Seems a bit rich to have a go at those that do!

Oh and as regards men swearing, don't forget there are plenty of children at the matches too. One kid behind me at one of the matches was told off by his dad for joining in with the song - how can we expect kids not to when adults are singing it?!

Tell you what, if you want an alternative to the Champagne song then here's an idea...stop complaining about it and start up an original ditty of your own. Nope? The fact is that the Champagne Song is one of the funniest non-spontaneous songs that you'll hear at football as most newbies attending piss themselves when hearing it. It's football, blokes swear A LOT! If you don't like it then you might be better suited to following the Harlequins or Surrey CCC.

102 points! Great! - even though we may not finish in the top two positions. Never mind, this has been the most enjoyable season for many a year. The future of the club looks good and, even at my old age, I look forward to much future success. Two points I would like to raise however. (1) what is the significance of everyone holding a bunch of keys up everytime we get a corner? And (2) do the supporters really have to sing that 'We are Wombles' song with the vile, insulting lyrics regarding the lady supporters of the opposition? We have such a good family atmosphere with children, young girls, mothers and grandmothers among our supporters that the lyrics must be as offensive to them as they are to me. How about someone coming up with a set of lyrics that are funny, witty and challenging without being downright offensive?

As Lou Carton-Kelly told me at the game today that I would do, I also received an email from Anne Eames regarding my idea of the photo with fav player. Anne also agreed it was great, they would take it seriously but it would probably be implemented next season. Another idea related to this is have your photo taken with more than one player but the more players you have, the more money you pay. If you want to have it done with the whole team, well! Think of the money it would raise! I think it would also be great, though it would be difficult to arrange, I suppose, for a team photo to me done and posters of it sold.

REPD, I'm not saying that AFCW are 'wrong' as such - (I am 100% behind them) just that they should think about dropping those honours. Surely, if the dream does happen and AFCW climb up to the league or even the prem, it would be better to say 'we were formed 10, 15, 20 years ago and we have made it this far, rather than saying we are returning, if you see what I mean? WFC's achievements will be celebrated by all who experienced them whether they are printed in an AFCW prog or not. ED (and others) - difference is between AFCW and other clubs who've had to restart again was that WFC was "stolen" whereas the others were "lost". Claiming the heritage of WFC is as much an act of defiance as anything else. Legally, it's a very grey area, which is why Koppout won't pursue the matter. Morally we *know* it's ours, most people there lived through it and can claim it as "theirs". Not anyone in MK who didn't know what a football was until Koppout kicked one at them. Do two wrongs make a right? Probably not, though you tell anyone associated at AFCW whether what they're doing is "wrong" and you'll be laughed at chroncially.

REPD, I see your point. However, I still think AFCW should celebrate their own achievements as they come rather than clinging on to the old honours. Interesting comments from Newport, and I tend to agree with TW. How about a piece in each programme (excuse me if this is already done) featuring a great Dons team/player/achievement from the past? Anyone can recite old honours, but surely a couple of pages celebrating the likes of Law, Sommers, Guy, Beasant et al would be a far more fitting tribute? TW should be able to help with the first three as he is old too ;-)

We (Newport County) reclaimed our name a couple of years ago having been Newport AFC for yonks. We are the same supporters, same colours, and we talk of the old club as if it is the same club we support now..but we don't list the achievements in our program. It would be a very short list anyway ;0)

It's interesting to see the "whose honours" messages. But, like it or not the honours were gained by Wimbledon F.C. The fact that the club is being hijacked to Milton Keynes does not alter the ownership of the honours. The new AFC club is exactly that- a new club. Formed out of the supporters hard work and passion I agree but not entitled to any honours until they have been won. Many say that W.F.C should lose them when the 'franchise' starts, but for any other club to claim them is doing exactly the same as Koppel--"taking something away from others"( certain laws prevent me from using the proper words). And, as we all know, two wrongs do not make a right.
TW
- Saturday, April 19, 2003 at 08:30:24 (PDT)
ED - I think the point is that many consider AFCW as the "same" club that we all started supporting. Even those who don't will still consider that Franchise don't deserve to claim the honours from WIMBLEDON Football Club. It's not as though they particularly celebrated their past pre-AFCW days.
REPD
SM4, - Saturday, April 19, 2003 at 04:40:15 (PDT)
Should AFCW really be printing all WFC's honours in their programme? I know they aren't being claimed as AFCW's, but then what's the point of printing them? Wimbledon Football Club as we know it has gone to be franchised, but like it or not, those honours are owned by that club. I thought that the whole point behind the formation of AFCW was to draw a line under the old club and start again from scratch. Claiming 100 odd years worth of honours isn't exactly strating from scratch is it? I'm not saying we have to forget what's gone before but I do think it's time to look to the future and not cling on to something that's gone.

What was the quote in that rag that Koppell sent us all? Something like 'same colours, same badge, same club', wasn't it? I'm pleased that they are changing the badge, it means that any of my old stuff with the WFC crest on it will not be confused with those tossers! Does Koppell seriously expect anyone to believe that he is shedding tears over substituting a bit of football history for a bit of tat with MK all over it? One of Koppell's mob contacted TW last October asking about the origins of the badge (assuming correctly that, as a supporter of 40 years standing he is probably one of the most knowledgable around, but incorrectly that he would help them) I assumed it was because he wanted to prevent AFCW using the badge, but he was obviously laying the groundwork to ditch it. Did Merton say he couldn't use it, or did 'someone' else?

Decisions, decisions Paul! By the way Ken's just got yet more photos developed including some of the Westfield game and some good ones of the charity match yesterday, one of which is a brilliant one of Ivor! He was SUCH a good sport! I was looking through one of our albums today when I noticed a couple of good (if I may say so myself(!)) photos I'd taken of Terry Eames - he's looking very pensive and gazing out at the pitch at Kingsmeadow. I'm going to bring them along on Saturday to show him. I could kick myself though because at the match yesterday, at one point he was strolling along with his arm round Robbo talking and it would made a great photo! Never mind......

I was completely gobsmacked when I read what Koppout had to say about season tickets and how the offer didn't extend to AFC fans. Does he really think we'd be interested?! As for the "1,200 supporters who stayed with us" - somebody should tell him he's got his sums wrong. Mind you, however many fans they have at the moment, he should consider himself lucky because it'll eventually dwindle to none whatsoever - most of them will end up being AFC supporters! Another fantastic victory on Saturday lads - keep up the good work!

Just read in the Standard that the desperate Charlie Koppout is offering 70% reductions in season ticket prices to follow the Franchise up the M1. After slagging off AFC fans he then said this offer doesn't extend to AFC supporters. 'Oh our lives are over Charlie!' He just doesn't get it. An absolute disgrace to fans everywhere. He goes on to say his obligation is 'to the 1200 supporters who stayed with us'. Er,....how many!!. Charlie Koppel, you make me laugh. In fact I'm sorry I even brought this up.

Don4 - without being clever no team gets promoted from the CCL. The CCL rule "apprantley" state that any team who finish in the top two will be put forward for potential election to Rymans Div 1. Then they are subject to getting enough votes at the AGM. A team that finishes 3rd wont be put forward to the Rymans AGM even if the top two are not up to scratch. So if we finish 3rd we wont be put forward by the CCL.
